Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos! I just finished this project this weekend. Because of this video, I went in with a good idea of the whole process. I did the front bearing, which was nearly identical to this video of the rear. The wobbly extension tech-tip was helpful, and also the 'love tapping' was key. I may not have hit that bad boy as hard as I did without your specific mention to really have at it! In case anyone else can benefit, here are the details(and pitfalls) of my install: I have an 05 Legacy GT Wagon. I had a humming vibration which sounded like a softer/higher frequency version of those highway rumble strips. The sound and vibration only showed up above 50mph, and also had a bit of a 'pulse' where the sound would get louder and softer(~2 second intervals). No change with engine rpm or in neutral. No wobbly wheel when lifted, no grinding sounds, or other typical symptoms of a bad hub. So this replacement was just a guess, but it worked. The new bearing did fixed the issue. I could not get the brake caliper bolts off with a breaker bar even after a night of PB Blaster soaking. I broke down and bought an impact wrench setup. Pure Magic! I wish I had bought one years ago. Bolts popped free in 5 seconds. I took most of the hub bolts out with a regular ratchet, they were not too tight. But one of them seized and the impact rounded the head of the nut off. (yeah, rookie mistake). So I went to work with the dremmel and hack saw. To prevent this I should have cleaned off the end of the bolt that was exposed, with a wire brush, before trying to pull it thru the hub flange. Everything else went smooth. The impact took the axle nut right off, no problem. I covered everything with anti-seize. The new hub assembly went in snug but without difficulty. My local Subaru dealership did not stock the exact hub bolt replacement for my car. I found a part number online, which they did have in stock and was a slightly shorter bolt but worked fine. They likely would not have suggested this alternate bolt so here is that part number just in case: 901000174 Thanks again Brian! PS: I also successfully did a set of 02 Forester head gaskets largely due to your videos on that subject. Huge help.

Brian I just wanted to say thank you for posting these videos, so far I've used 3 to fix my 05 Outback that I'm determined to keep running past 250k. My hub was rust welded to the shield so I ended up taking parking brake off and using my BFH on a bench to bust it loose. Took what seemed like forever to get apart but the new assembly went on easy and fixed the awful bearing noise.

Thanks for this video and for being thorough. You seem to have a knack for educating. Watched this with my 15/yo son and we replaced the left rear of my 2008 Subaru Outback last year and today we are going after the right rear of the same vehicle. Great bonding moments and teaching the kids these days how to wrench a little. Looking forward to a quiet ride!

For those shadetree mechanics, I just did this job yesterday. An easier way to split the hub from the shield is to bolt the wheel back in place after removing brake caliper and rotor, and kicking the tire left & right till it loosens from the suspension knuckle and axle. Then remove the wheel again, and use two scrap pieces of 4x4 lumber to lay the hub/shield onto, studs facing down, with the edges of the shield/caliper bracket resting on the lumber. Then take a BFH directly to back of the hub where the wheel bearing is. A few good, STRONG whacks and even the most rusted-on hub will pop right off.

This is really a helpful video. Because of it, I just did my '05 Outback XT LTD driver-side rear hub replacement without any problems. (Symptom was the typical bad bearing drone at any speed over 10 mph that became increasingly loud over a three month period.) I used a good quality 1/2" air impact wrench to remove and reinstall the axle nut. I was able to use that same impact wrench with a 6" solid extension to remove and reinstall the caliper and hub bolts, although the swivel extension that Brian recommends would definitely make getting to a couple of the hub bolts a little easier. I'm a moderately competent home auto mechanic who's done most of my own car work for almost 40 years. But I still really appreciate the guys who take the time to put up a good quality "how to" video. Brian, I also appreciate your humble attitude toward things. Blessings to you.

Thank you, Brian! I had one obviously bad rear bearing on my Subaru 2006 Outback LLBean with 110K miles, and my nearest Subaru dealer here on Long Island quoted me approximately $1200 total parts/labor/sales tax to replace both rear bearings. With the help of this thorough video and another write-up I found, I was able to complete this job by myself, in my driveway. I have very little previous auto mechanical experience beyond occasional oil changes. Approximately $225 in parts, $300 in tools, and 8 hours later, BOTH of my rear hub bearing assemblies are replaced and running smoothly! One of them was a real bear to remove, which ate up about 3 hours of prying, PB Blasting, and BFH'ing, but in the end... Success! I will have much use from most of my new tools, as well.

I as well enjoy watching the struggle. Most parts just have a few bolts holding them on to everything, so in theory it should be as simple as grabbing your ratchet and taking 2 bolts off. But we all know it's never that easy. Showing the struggle and/or the other things that have to be removed to get better access at something is what always helps me in my own work the most. You and ETCG have inspired me to apply for automotive mechanics for September. I have a direction in life now, thanks.

I appreciate this video, Just got the Wife's car back from the dealer 2005 Subaru Legacy, She had leaking head gaskets so we went ahead and had the dealer do that, then they called back saying it needed rings, rear wheel bearings, pads etc.. I went ahead and said Go ahead and do the piston rings, I'll do the bearings, and break pads, rear diff cover gasket myself. I have worked on just about everything but this subaru so reviewing this video was great to point out all the little details like the ABS Sensor. Great Video man!

Man just finished this on my LGT same year as that one. What a job, took me about 3 hours! The most difficult part was to get the axel nut and the whole e-brake and hub assembly out. Well my LGT has lived in Michigan so the damn rust was the main problem. The symptoms I had was a noise at low speeds and the wheel had some play. What a difference now! My LGT now flies down the road. That damn bearing was generation a lot of friction. The video helped me big time, Thanks bro!

And you did help me too a lot home made, here in Portugal, a country were Subarus are closer to rare..and because of that mechanics ask a lot from subarus, simply not used too! But DYI is the answer. Thank you too for helping others such as me to make things easier. Best regards

When I work on my vehicles, I usually offer a prayer before hand and when the thing just will not go, line up, turn, or let loose, I stop and tell God what's going on with me and ask for some help. When I got the bearing out the driveshaft came out too xD! No stress just hammered the driveshaft from the rear. Thank you for the upload, it helped a lot!

Thanks for the vid, Brian. I was driving home last Wednesday and heard that tough noise from my rear wheel. I'm sure that's what's wrong with it. My dad replaced the bearing about 3 or 4 years ago and it worked great until now. My dad has since passed away and I'm going to have to do it now. On some videos they replace only the bearing and you replace it with another hub and the bearing already pressed in. That's great if I can get it all together because I don't have a press. You make it look so easy. I like the way you refrain from profanity. haha You're mom raised you right. Happy Birthday, Brian. I hope you had a great birthday. Blessings.

Update... Following most of your procedures here, I was successfully able to change out the rear bearing on my wife's 2005 Outback XT. I did have to educate some of the parts a bit, but I didn't let up and they eventually came free. I'm speaking mainly of the brake backing plate and the hub assembly. I beat with a BFH for a while and it freed up. Thanks for the video on this, it really helped. Being a mechanic of 25+ years, these Subbie's are not too bad to work on compared to other cars I've worked on.

Just changed out my driver's side rear hub on my 05' LGT today. Had to take the E-brake assembly and hub right off the axle and smash out the hub from behind... My wheel bearing was destroooyyyed! Good as new now :) Thanks for the video, man!

This is a really good video! I've had three of these done under warrantee and now with #4 going I'm ready to give this a go. The wheel sensor was an invaluable tip, I think I would have missed that at first. All three of the front bearings that I had replaced started with a whirring sound. Use the letter v to make a revving sound and that's what I've had every time with my 2005 Outback Legacy sedan. That sound wasn't enough for the garage to do the repair under warrantee but each time the bearings went bad really quick after noticing the noise. Subscribed

Thanks for your reply. It is not the stud bolts that I need to remove. I am talking about the entire circular disk that holds the stud bolts. My new bearing assembly does not have this part on it as yours does in the video. So I need to get it off of my old bearing and put it on my new one. I just need to figure out how. Thanks again for your reply's and videos. They are the most friendly and informative that I have found on youtube.

I had a pretty good idea how to do this on my 05, but watching you walk through it helped a lot..especially the ABS sensor! I'm guessing that's why many report issues that their cruise control stopped working when they replaced the bearing. Great job man. Yeah I know its almost a 5 year old video, but the 'new' cam did a good job..ha

Thanks for good video and tips. My Subaru Impreza 2008 is still under work, but seems to have exactly similar setup. Although I did not have Big Fun Hammertime. Seriously tried that first and did not worked. My day turned to BST, Big Torch Time. Base was really tightly rusted so with puller I took outer part of bearing assembly out. Then heated and cooled three times with torch and with huge pipe wrench tried to get some turning happening. I was already loosing my mental and had to have short break. After break tried turning with pipe wrench (jumping on it) and my brother hammered same time, finally got bearing to move and out. Unfortunately spare part I had bought was not right size. Really annoying when same model has multiple version on some spare parts.

You made this look so easy. It is great!!! I did run into not being able to break the bolts that hold the brake bracket in. I then watch another one of your vidoes on getting out rusty bolts by heating them.....and it worked. All said and done I watch more youtube then working on the car or about the same. Thanks for your help!!

Awesome video man! I'm glad you mentioned that the hub has to be turned in a certain way to fit, and that you don't have to mess with the emergency brake. Saved me a whole lotta time. That axle nut though, impact wouldn't take it off and I broke a breaker bar trying to get it off. I had to take it to a shop and have someone else break it loose.

I feel like such a dope... I've done this twice now and both times I disassembled the gosh dang ebrake stuff. I didn't even check to see if it could be done without that. I'll no doubt have to do this many more times, so the info is very appreciated!!!!

Thanks for your video. I just did mine and it only took me 1.5 hr using hand tools and PB Blaster. I did one of the fronts a couple of years ago and it was very difficult to get off. I still have some noise so I may do the front drivers side next, I hope it comes off as easy as this one. This one came off with a few sprays of PB blaster and the BFH. The hardest thing actually was the axle nut and separating the E-Brake from the old hub.

wobble extensions ftw! im surprised that a lot of people i know who regularly "work" on cars don't know what these are, but they are a very very commonly used tool in my toolbox. they always work well in those tough spots

Done and done! Needed the "Big Fun Hammer" to get the old hub off. Never used PB Blaster before. Awesome stuff! Saved me big bucks avoiding the "stealership".and local auto repair who regularly overcharges me.

New camera is nice. I for one like the "frustrating parts" left in! Sometimes you give out a tip without even realizing it. Also it helps to know others struggle at times. I agree too much staging makes it too much like Chilton's
