A clear improvement over the 1980-1984 model, structurally it's almost there, only the steering column movement needed to be fixed. And while the passenger in the 1980-1984 model probably would have died, forces on both dummies in this generation fell short of fatal, although the driver still would have definitely have had to been rushed to the hospital, head injuries were still pretty serious. The first-gen Legacy improved on this, and once the Legacy got an airbag (optional starting in 1992), it was above-average for its time on safety, a place where Subaru has stayed since.
