I have a couple of Steam Locomotives to repair. This is the worst condition I've ever seen. Confidence is low. Amazon: www.amazon.ca/hz/wishlist/ls/... Patreon: / scottrails You can contact me directly at scottrodsgarage@gmail.com

I wouldn't throw in the towel yet. Darth Santa Fe did one of these Bachman steam engines recently on his KZfaq channel. He eyeballed the quartering and used epoxy to hold the wheels in place. Also, here's great tip to debond super glue from metal parts. Just use fingernail polish remover or acetone. It debonds superglue, and it handy for debonding superglue from fingers if this happens.

The model is of a Canadian Pacific K1a class 4-8-4 built in Montreal in 1928. The original 3100 is preserved in Ottawa at the Canada Science and Technology Museum

And many refer to it as the Northern wheel arrangement according to the Whyte wheel arrangements. Cheers - eastern TN

You have more patience than me. I would have given up long before you. She looks like it hit the floor. Make her a shelf queen.

I agree with the others, that is a Northern-Class locomotive. Trouble is, Bachmann steam locomotives that aren't Spectrum are full-on rubbish. You did your best, and I was really pulling for you. But at the same time, I knew it would have better served as a display piece than an actual working locomotive. Pick yourself up from the ground, dust yourself off, and keep moving forward.

The valve gear of the Canadian Pacific was jamming. The eccentric rods have to be connected a certain way. You should find photos of the model and/or prototype to guide you on how they should be positioned at various stages of the main driver's (second from front) rotation.

You have a lot of great comments addressing Bachmann's split gears problem with all their trains of that era and the split frame was just junk. Bachmann was the worst product in trains you could buy back then but similar to Tyco they were cheap. Like the other commenters I knew you were in trouble when you opened the boxes. The other locomotive is the same but maybe without all the glue and piston, connecting rod, cylinder and valve gear linkage problems on both sides. Don't feal down because that locomotive was a nightmare at best. Good luck with the next one, Jersey Bill.

You need to download a copy of the Whyte system of steam engine wheel arrangements. That's the standard by which all steamers are identified. As soon as you said Bachmann, I knew you were in trouble. I stay away from old Bachmann because of the split frame design and the split gear design of their axles. I had a couple of Bachmann split frames with split gears and they were purchased new. The gears split within a year. I did save them to use as train wrecks down in a gully somewhere on the new layout. Cheers from eastern TN

Sounds like split axles. Don't forget the hobby is about fun. Repaint the body as the mood takes you...

The moment you unboxed the locos I knew you had your work cut out for you, especially with the Canadian Pacific 4-8-4!

The Classic Model Trains channel showed a repair of the quartering problem on a Bachmann loco that is well worth checking out. I will be tackling this problem eventually as I was gifted a pair of old Bachmann Consolidations, one of which has the quartering issue. Problem with this CP loco is that it appears to have made the long trip to the floor- probably more than once. Yes, this wheel arrangement is generally referred to as a Northern, although I think New York Central called theirs a Niagara.

You are a Glutten for Punishment, Dave, lol. That CP steamer is a Disaster! Thanks for sharing.

I'm going through the same thing right now. Definitely very frustrating working on a western pacific 2 8 2. I lost the 2 little rivet like pins for the wheel shafts. I know your pain.

That was a good watch, thanks for that Dave. Valiant effort, I think she was too far gone though. Would the glue holding the wheels to the axels have prevented some conductivity maybe? Looking forward to the next one chap. David.

The plastic axles have swollen up where the metal wheels insert, so the plastic is touching the chassis before the metal is. That's the part in the video where I was trying to file the plastic down.

Dave, with steam trains... quartering is best done by setting one side at noon and the other at 3 o'clock and checking all conrod arms move freely.. once that is done it is much easier to work on it on a rolling road. That loco looks like someone has tried to repair it once before and given up and then just used lots of araldite 5 min epoxy to make it look right and make it a shelf ornament.

Not even a good shelf queen. Very good attempt Dave

Fair play Dave, you were up against it from the get go. As others have said, those older Bachmann locos are crap. You probably went further than most would have. Good luck with the next one.

Sometimes you just have to face the fact that a loco is too far gone! (i imagine you're not the first one to give up on this poor machine.) Top marks for trying very hard. Put it down to experience, take a deep breath and keep going! Hope tomorrow fares better! (Just going to have a look.) Cheers

AT this point, remove the main rod, and valve gear. Ya, it will look funny, but at least it will move.

High dollar pancake motor. It's still a pancake motor.............
@ScottRails2 ай бұрын
I'm amazed they opted to put a pancake in a steam train, considering how many links there are before power is transferred to the track. Those little plastic gears are taking a LOT of abuse.
