Lumpy indeed, but you got it running. Yeah, i agree bud, new insulators and that'll run a lot smoother.

I know it's a pain esp since glued to wheels but......if you had glued 1/2s of insulators together then put them on a square shaft....you could have put them in a drill and sanded them till they were smooth

Unfortunately the split gears on older bachmanns seem to be more common than not having them split. Only ever bought 2 second hand and exactly the same issues. Not so bad to deal with over the pond as there's better access to athearn gears to rectify the issue. In the UK it's a chore trying to find them without having to order from the states

Yeggi or Thingverse have 3D print files for resin replacements of the plain axles. Search for Bachmann Axel Replacement (note the spelling of axel) or Bachmann LNER Class. Might have a drive gear but did not see one.

Bachmann engines especially those with the split chassis usually have split gears to boot. I stay away from Bachmann. You cannot super glue Bachmann cracked gears. Darth Santa Fe epoxied the gears on the Bachmann he was working on and it worked out pretty well. Ron from Classic Model Trains made metal sleeves to go over the axles. Very bad design by Bachmann. nice work. i have also some of these bachmann 4-8-4 with the same problems. and i ordered also in the uk but: it wasnt working. that were 3d printed things, and the guy, guees called peter, told me, that the bachmann article numbers in the uk were different from that in the us - for the same article. so, save your money. bachmann itself dont produce the anymore since 20 years or so. but if you find some on shapeways - there were some wich worked after filing them a bit because they are way tho small and so they break easily... the method of ron from rons calssic trains is even better but its not the first one who tried and was succesful. very thin rings pushed over the broken gears.

Never had luck with any of the Bachmann line, the plus, and spectrum line all still had drivetrain issues..fix it, then never use it that way it always works..I'd rather purchase a 40+ year rivarossi locomotive then a new Bachmann..

Split gear axles is a perennial problem with Bachmann, I get it a lot with N gauge. If you have the part number, I could try to get them for you and post them? If it helps! Cheers, Jim L

Well you got punched by the bachmann curse I thought that maybe a PVC plastic dowel could be turned on a drill with files and drilled To a diameter just smaller than the square segments end to long end then whith a square jewelers file open the hole and epoxy into place if this interests you I have an idea on the gear return a message and I'll tell you

Bachmann split frames suck, they should be ashamed of themselves for making a terrible product
