Thank you so much for explaining the fusion procedures. I am having a subtalar fusion next week. When people asked me what kind of surgery I was having I would say ankle fusion and when I went to my pre-op the doctor corrected me. I came home and began looking up videos to explain it on KZfaq and this was BY FAR the best video in terms of explaining it in layman’s terms with the visual. 🙏🏽

I myself had subtalar fusion including bone graft. My Dr put a donated femoral head in the space where my subtalar fusion. Interesting video I found watching the procedure

Excellent clear description of procedures. I'm unfortunate in that injury back in 93 (multiple fractures and snapped ligaments) went undiagnosed for 6 years. 99 onward 17 ops and now awaiting subtalar fusion (ankle fusion done in 2021). Description given here made it clear why uneven surfaces causing me so much pain. Thank you. Sharing this with friends and family as explanation.

This is a great video and has helped me finally understand what my doctor is suggesting I have done. I'm only 50 and very active: mountian bike, rowing, climbing, golf, walking/hiking. I do get quite severe soreness and stiffness for about 36hrs after a full day's activity but have found strengthening my legs in the gym (mainly non-weight bearing exercises: rowing machine, exercise bike, but some squats and deadlifts too) seems to have reduced the amount of pain I suffer. Would you be able to make a similar video that shows the loss in joint movement after a subtalar fusion operation? I am concerned it will affect my active lifestyle....particularly the follow through in my golf swing! Seems trivial I know but would love to know - it's what's holding me back from having it done.

Hi, thank you so much for this video. I'm only 19 and have had a subtalar fusion on both feet after suffering quite bad calcaneus fractures on both feet. The surgeon said that they were "life-changing" injuries and that my feet will never be as they once were. He said that he would do the fusion to reduce pain after the fracture. Once the fusion has taken place, is it possible that the surgeon can unfuse the calcaneus and talus so that they are individual bones again. I imagine it must be very hard to try and do that considering your cutting into bone and you don't really know where the joint line is supposed to be. I know with regular ankle fusion, I've read that the surgeon can undo regular ankle fusion but haven't really heard anything on the reversal of a subtalar fusion. But, thank you for the information, this video has helped me gain more knowledge. Best of luck to this channel and keep spreading fantastic knowledge.

Hi, sorry that I didn't reply sooner. In terms of how the subtalar fusions feel, I don't have much pain however you do lose a lot of motion. The fusions make my feet feel extremely stiff and rigid, especially on uneven ground or rocky terrain on mountains or hills. The fusions can make bending down difficult and going down steps difficult sometimes. It just makes your hindfoot (bottom of foot) really rigid and fixed which drives me crazy some days. I do hope that there is a subtalar joint replacement coming in the future because I struggle to cope with the subtalar fusions given how much inversion/eversion you lose with fusing the joint up. Hope your doing ok anyway and if you go ahead with the subtalar fusions, good luck. (I also don't practise sport as inversion/eversion is very important in sport)

Hi Guys, I've had an ankle fusion (April 2023). My CT scan has just come back as a partial fusion, is this normal for a healthy 34yr old male? When should it fully fusion. The pain is probably the worst It's ever been

You're providing great information and I appreciate the fact that you just jump right into the subject and don't Dilly dally but with that said, you need to slow down your speech. It's too rapid.
