Beautiful garden. I live in the hot southwest and it’s a beast to try to grow anything. Your hostas are beautiful. It’s hard to grow them here.

it took me some years to clear away all the japanese honeycuckle that had taken over the old family home when i moved in.. i tried to share the property with it for some years to follow, but after some summers of cutting the 8 feet of new growth off most of the large bushes that seemed to see my trimming as a signal to grow more, i knew it was them or me, and i wasnt about to let some sweet smelling bushes run me out of here.. i did keep one in a tiny pot afterwards, and one exceptional one that grew mysteriously from one of the giant trunks id cut and laid near a wall.. its still growing well, now a few years later, tho the log has no roots.. but yes, i keep them extremely tightly pruned and small, i wont let them get berries or roots in the ground.. but i will keep these two to remember our good times

Thank you for your video. So very helpful. I tried wintersowing mine last year with no success. Will try this method with all the wonderful allium seed I have collected. Would be thrilled with 50% germination just to be ablento spread the love.throughout my garden for a more cohesive landscaping scheme. Will be doing this with my poppy and larkspur seeds as well. Love your energy and presentation style. Feels like hangingnout with my best friend in the garden. Will definitely be subscribing to your channel.

Soleil, I harvested my allium seed heads last week, right before we got some heavy rain. Those seedheads are currently air-drying in my sunporch inside of an Amazon box. I covered the bottom of the box with white paper towels so I can see any seeds that happen to fall out inside the box. I save empty prescription medication bottles along with the caps (especially the darker amber-colored ones), these are great for seed storage and viability. Since I save a lot of different seeds, I always write down what I saved the seeds from and the date I harvested them and put that little note right into the pill bottle along with the seeds. How do you store your saved seeds, that you want to germinate for next spring? ~Margie
@Suburbanoasis3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a pretty good system Margie! There are so many different ways to make it work and it is always interesting to hear what others are doing. I usually just use paper envelopes and it works pretty well, but I like the idea of old pill bottles. 😍🌿🌺

Thank you so much for your videos! How many years will it take from seed to a flowering allium?
@Suburbanoasis Жыл бұрын
I think it depends. Based on this experience I recommend seeding where there is no mulch and expecting at least a few years until bloom. 😃🌷🪴🌿
@krisyallowega5487 Жыл бұрын
I have found that there are so many "duds" when it comes to allium seeds. I have tried a number of times to collect seeds to germinate. I have had the same number of allium for about 10 years now. While my neighbour has them overrunning his garden!
@Suburbanoasis Жыл бұрын
I think I mulch too much for them to really seed. 🤔🌼🌸🌴
@tracycrider77782 ай бұрын
You could also dig them in fall and divide ❤
@krisyallowega54872 ай бұрын
@@tracycrider7778 I think the issue for me is that Allium do not compete well with others. Not that my plot is bursting with plants, I just have a feeling that they like to be with similar plants.

Thanks so much this year my alliums all came up and now I have seed. So my others will come back right? And I can scatter the seeds like with my columbines?
@Suburbanoasis3 жыл бұрын
Yes, they should all come back. Then you can use the seed where you want to plant a new plant. The germination rate will not be 100 percent, but its pretty good! 🙂🌾🌼
@erinjames40243 жыл бұрын
I didnt know you could gather seeds from alliums i thought you needed to buy bulbs? Is it certain Alliums only?
@Suburbanoasis3 жыл бұрын
All alliums produce seed, but I only have experience collecting it from the ones I grow. The bulb is the "root" system that grows as the plant gets larger so the bulbs you buy in the store are typically plants that have grown more than one season, had the tops cut off and dried and stored properly in packaging for you to plant. 🙂🍀🌹

You pulled one out of the ground but said it wasn't pollinated. How do you know? I couldn't see what you were trying to show
@Suburbanoasis2 жыл бұрын
There are seed pods that are visible and have formed at the end of each bloom if it has been pollinated. 😍🌸🌿🏵

I pulled the seed heads off while still green. (I should have researched first) Is it possible to dry them off the plant and still germinate?

Are the seeds green or black? If it is light beige, is it dead?
@Suburbanoasis Жыл бұрын
The seeds should be black from a beige seed head, which means it has dried, not died. 🥰🌻⚘️🪴

I'm really having bad luck with hostas idk why I think it's too hot and sunny where I have mines they keep drying out any suggestions welcome 🙏
@Suburbanoasis3 жыл бұрын
You are likely right, this is the time of year when you find out they are in too much sun as the edges of the leaves will turn brown and dry out. You may need to find them a new spot in a shader location! ☺🕶☁️

Did you end up having luck with the alliums growing the following spring?
@Suburbanoasis2 жыл бұрын
In some areas yes, but we had too little rain and they perished. They do take several years to really establish themselves from seed. 😍🌿🌷🌼
