And he's not blowing himself up screaming or being animated, there's a certain nuance to his acting that I don't think any of the others have, except for Jeremy Strong when Kendall is too depressed to be manic

@@John_Locke_108 pretty simple, Hamilton is a wildly popular multicultural musical about American history. Tom is implying that the only reason it’s popular is because you’re not allowed to say you don’t like it because it looks like you’re racist. Obviously ridiculous and over the top way of putting it but it definitely hits on some real life sentiments of some people.

@@John_Locke_108 no it’s a reimagining of history. It’s not categorically bad but it took quite a few pretty big liberties with the historical parts. I know that it’s art, but it was being used to teach kids in place of actual history, at least when I was still in school.

Matthew Macfadyen is such a great actor. "I've read the prison blogs, Greg." I would absolutely hate Mencken if he was really running for POTUS but the actor makes his character so charming.

Matthew Macfadyen has been always great in this show but this episode is the start of some of the best acting I've ever seen. Tom Wambsgans is such a delicious character ever written and Matthew just excells with it. The arc of Tom in seasons 3 & 4 really is one of the most special storylines I've witnessed. That scene outside of the restaurant with Tom and Kendall is just brilliant. The delivery of the lines "My hunch is that you're going to get fucked" and "Do you know what they're doing up in the suite? They're picking the next president." are just *chef's kiss*

Logan got fucked when Nan Pierce saw through his $25B deal. Sorry Tom, you are wrong, no need to put Logan on a pedestal, he'll only dehumanize you in return. The funniest reaction I have seen of this episode are of people who don't realize how awful Menken actually is. They are like ''why is Shiv being so bratty!? What Menken is saying is true!"

It's tough to give Shiv credit for being right because the show isn't really interested in the wide view of things going on, and Shiv being who she is won't compromise herself for any greater cause anyway (like all of them). Nan Pierce didn't see through shit though tbf, she just got spooked.

I usually don't like Shiv but she is so right, Roman does love being kicked by the boot, that's all he's ever known. And Logan and his brother are pretty estranged what was he doing at the start of the series? working to be a manger at a theme park, which is VERY different to working in a high up cooperate job, flying in private jets and helicopters, eating fancy dinners staying in million dollar mansions and taking rides on super yacht, you telling me if you were a down on your luck kid you wouldn't wanna keep that sorta life style up after having so little? and in the FIRST episode shiv even uses Gregs last $20 for soda, so yes he did come from nothing he had basiclly 0 dollars in his bank when he started the series.

Any local company would be ecstatic at the prospect of employing the nephew of Logan Roy. 2. He doesn't have to be on everyone's side. He could just chill and get paid and climb the corporate ladder. It's not like his 0815 job at Waystar is constantly in jeopardy

nah, I hate Greg because his character summarizes what is wrong with many privileged, white men. he has no believes because he never needed to have any, he has no backbone, his main characteristic is that he's selfish, the fact that he had eaten shit in the past didn't make him develop a moral compass or political believes. the most he can care about other human being is when he has a personal relationship to them, like Tom. he stands for nothing, he is nothing but he follows the money, who cares if the world gets worse because of it for everyone else. yeah, many other players in the family are more powerful and harmful but he's the encapsulation of all the faceless yes-sayers that work for the powerful assholes who run shit above the little man's head.

It is funny how Shiv is totally blind on why Waystar became successful, and yet she wants to lead it. They have a niche on the political spectrum due to ATN. That gives them power, they are able to trade influence, are relevant, push their other business ventures, lobby for legislation etc. They are not just people with money, but people with media, with an audience that can be swayed. Shiv would've made them just an another voice in the chorus of similar lefty media combating for the same eyeballs. Not uniqe. That's why the plan with PGN was so good, they would keep their core audience, and have their own respected, lefty, mostly independent brand. Even more influence. Shiv is not all bad, some of her ideas are good, but basically she is clueless business wise, and just a spoiled brat (like the rest of the kids). The tantrum with the photo, come on, there is a time for aguing, and time to be united. Especially in the eyes of outsiders. Anyway, the kids are basically just keep on destroying the company for the whole series, not adding anything of value. Logan is a bastard, but at least he build something. They just decrease the value. And Kend destroying himself for 123 time to no one suprise. Too bad Connor did not became the candidate. That would've been hilarious.

Nah, I disagree about the political climate though, Shiv was a political advision and a successful one at that, she isn't an idiot, she knows Menken is better for business but she just thinks Menken is a bad choice for the country. At some point, you do have to ask, would you have supported Hitler if it was better for your business ?

@@the_crypter on some level you’re right but when you consider Successions world (and indeed perhaps our own) with how corrupt the people in government are, I’m not sure how much it matters to them how bad a guy he is if he’s good for ratings and does what they want. If Mencken truly is that bad what’s he really gonna get done without the support of the GOP and conservative media, he is sort of forced to act how they want if he wants their help. It’s definitely fair to say there is a point where principals are more important to business but I don’t think that’s ever a real concern or threat for them (in this episode). I think Shiv probably does think it’s morally wrong but is also exaggerating how bad it is because she wants her preferred candidate to win out for her own benefit mixed with some personal bias of not liking conservatives in the first place.

@@the_crypter I believe that many successfull brands that exist even today, like BMW, Siemens. Allianz, Audi, Bayer, Hugo Boss, Mercedes etc. said yes. In general the whole drama with Mencken being Hitler is just funny. US preseident is a puppet with limited powers, just look at the braindead one currently at the helm. Now, if the guy would have the whole US-style-NSDAP behind him then yest, it could be scary. And you are overevaluating Shiv achievements in politics. She was there only because of her name, and influence which I've mentioned above. As said in the first season, when some woman reponsible for TV programming openly said, that she would not even let her in (as a lobbyst) if her name was not carved on the building. She also just pretends to care. The series is over, and we can plainly seee how she lied to that woman that was about to testify in Congress.

That fact the Logan refers to the President as " The Raisin" is such a wonderful way to charactize the amount of respect he has for someone who is consider the leader of the "Free World". So you didn't have any problem with Logan/Roman/Shiv's views, Logan's under the table connection to the Raisin (that he uses to fight the cruises investigation), Ravenhead, ATN 'news', Waystar's corporate tokenism, Gil Eavis, the champagne liberal Pierces, but now that it touches on your Mr. T (and Mencken is not even close to a 1 to 1 comparison) it's suddenly too much? The election/politics doesn't even get discussed again until the tail end of season 4. Maybe you should get checked for some form of media illiteracy or selective memory?
