I adore this. We moved to Sudbury in 1970. I remember the scramble. I loved Silverman's. My dad used to get stocking stuffers at Woolworths. We shopped at the City Centre (in the heart of Sudbury) at Dolomity Shoes and Bonimart. Dolomity gave us a massive discount when we brought in all 11 kids.

Damn was born in 99 so the only downtown I know is the one where you might get mugged tryig to get a double double. Crazy how much things have changed

... good prosperous times ... better times ... streets full of happy, well dressed clean cut, decent people going about their business ... flash forward to 2024 (I won't go there) ... I wish I could walk into that video and never look back

Yes, those were the "good old days" - what a change since then - many reasons but removing the parking at the former market and where place des arts is located were bad decisions.

@@friendlytoseniors3187 ... no sense dwelling on the macabre & the morose ... that line up of "the walking dead" at the down town Sudbury Timmies says it all ... depressing & quite frankly scary

I miss downtown like this, I used to love eating at Kresge's with my mom and little sister.

Omg its filmed right from the very spot i stand when i went to see my doctor! Hes not there anymore but doctor Chow used to be right beside where there filming. Where there filming, if you look today, well thats the 3rd or 4th floor infront of the elavators.

Great footage. Sad to see the downtown core such a dump now. It looked so bright and vibrant back then, now it's dark, dirty and creepy. Shame on city officials for letting the downtown become what it is today.

Hey this is terrific footage of downtown Sudbury in its glory days. Thanks for helping to recapture part of my childhood.

Despite this film being made in 1971 this footage in itself testifies to the economic vibrancy of the past. Compare this footage to what downtown Sudbury has become since the early 90s. Night and day

I'm amazed that there are actually a lot of people downtown! Wouldn't it be fun if it was still like this today?!

The Nickel Range Hotel at 1:58 is where Alex Trebek grew up; his father was a cook there. The place was torn down a few years after this film to make way for the downtown mall.

Someone volunteered that there are many people trying to recreate the vibrancy of 1971 again. Well I am one of those people who truly believes it is going to happen. With 3M at the helm and aware of the inept, useless, tired, city department heads who do nothing but thwart creative ideas I am hopeful the next few years will show some major improvements to the heart of our great city. The City of Lakes! The 2nd largest city in land area in Canada.

That was a regular day. It was like this in the early 1980's also, but had started to dwindle down. Remember everything was downtown, there were also many more buildings downtown, with much more to do.

OMG I think I work at the building shown at 2:14...beside Plaza which appears to be where The Grand is now...The building is AMI Audio's HQ, and also a dentist's office. Crazy.

What a contrast to the state it is in now!! I remember the vibrant city I lived in back then...The politicians have certainly ruined Sudbury's down town,..now I wouldn't go near the place.

lol .. haven't heard of "amble scramble", but it's a good one... This type of crossing is more commonly known (by traffic designers) as "helter skelter" or sometimes (depending on the country) "pell mell"

Its Sad that Sudbury's downtown core is NOTHING like it was back in the 70's... Now, the only time there is a crowd like this, is when the Santa Claus Parade comes through. (Pretty Depressing i think.. for a large urban city, our downtown is almost dead during the weekdays) Goes To Show How Well We've Thrived!!?!! o_O
