What I'm curious about is how you do the shorter, more accented notes, mostly in the upper notes during the melody. They sounds almost like you're hitting the glass, rather than the more smooth motions. Is that the case? Or perhaps the smaller glasses stand out more and have a shorter ring time. Or you're just very good at dampening the cups as you play. Still, I wonder if you can "hit" them harder or otherwise make them louder, but only for a short period. Those top notes very much have a bell-like quality.

@@4CHRIST1234 those effects are distracting from the simple beauty of the sugar plum fairy tough. It's supposed to be a playful, cheeky piece of skipping and dancing notes. Such a beautiful tone, and it just proves that almost anything could be used as a musical instrument. When I was in university I did my thesis on that very subject. Turning every day household items into musical instruments, that play and sound completely unique from traditional instruments we are used to hearing. Almost anything can be used for percussion, I’m sure you’ve all seen videos of people carving out vegetables, especially the carrot, to be used as a flute of sorts, but I managed to make string instruments from tin cans, string, wire, just things most people have sitting around the house. If you have kids, and you want to get their minds going while having fun at the same time, challenge them to see if they can make up a musical instrument from every day ordinary objects in the house, you’ll be amazed at the things you can come up with, and yes, I even did the stereotypical milk carton ukulele, which actually sounded quite good to my surprise! I also did use glass, but not just wine glasses and goblets, but properly balanced on sticks, affixed with an adhesive, I was able to use dinner plates, water pitchers, cutlery, you name it. Sounds rather corny for a University thesis, but I am going to blow my own horn, pardon the pun, and tell you that my professor gave me a perfect score, and more than that, insisted that I bring all the instruments in to the lecture hall, and teach all the students what I had made and how to play them, and as it turned out it was actually pretty fun, we got a rivalry going! My fraternity brothers and I started to compete with other groups in the University, and we actually managed to put on a concert, for the entire university, even managed to raise $200,000 that we donated it to all local schools in the area, so that they may have a better music program for their students, it isn’t that wonderful? I grew up here in Toronto as my name suggests, lived here all my life, pathetically I haven’t gone far, I literally live four blocks from the hospital I was born in! But unfortunately a lot of the schools, both grade schools and high schools are like, have very poor or even absent music programs due to funding issues, so my professor came up with the idea of putting on a concert and charging money to raise funds for these underprivileged schools. Now it’s a yearly tradition, and although I haven’t kept up with the exact amounts, we have raise tens of millions of dollars over the decades, to help students have a proper introduction to music, and as a result, countless students that we helped ended up attending our universities music program, now that’s something to be proud of! But I’m not taking any credit, because it might’ve been my idea for my thesis, but literally hundreds of other people were involved in the creation of these challenges and concerts each year. Anyways, my apologies for rambling on as I always do, but I just had to throw that out there, and say don’t put limits on what you can achieve when it comes to music. Even my own family laughed at me when I was putting the so-called instruments together, but after receiving a perfect score, what does my father say? “Pretty good for junk that probably would have been throwing in the garbage”. Unfortunately, that was 40 years ago, and over the years, I have lost every single instrument that I created, but I also drew blueprints of every single one, so after watching this video, I think I’m going to try to re-create it just for fun. I’m desperately trying to get my grandchildren involved and interested in classical music, but being typical young people, all I get to hear is “that’s for old people“. But I think I can trick them into actually playing classical music on homemade instruments without them even realizing it. Do you want to know how I developed my love of classical music? It’s not because of my family, as I am the only person in my family with any musical interest or ability, it’s from watching Looney Tunes and other various cartoons that used a vast amount of classical music in their programs. Unfortunately, most of those cartoons are just not appropriate for today’s society, most being horrifically politically incorrect, as they were very very sexist, racist, homophobic, and every other social stigma you can imagine, but back when they came out, all those things were socially acceptable. I’m not saying they are acceptable, because after watching the same cartoons as an adult I was horrified, but the music is still there, I wish they would start re-introducing classical music into modern children’s programming. To be honest I don’t know anything about it, because my children are in their 30s, and my youngest grandson is already 13, so I don’t see children’s programs anymore. For those of you with young kids, do they still use classical music at all in children’s programming? If not, maybe that something we need to re-introduce. Classical music will never ever go out of style or die, if anything it’s experiencing a renaissance right now, but the best time to get children interested is preschool, because that’s when I fell in love with classical music. It’s such a different world today than it was when I grew up. I’m not that old, I’m not retired and I still work full-time, I’m in my mid-50s (I skipped several grades), but judging from my family, the younger ones have no interest in classical music whatsoever, and I’m desperately trying to change that, to open their minds to new experiences. Whenever they come over to the house, I always have classical music playing in the background, and then I hear the whining, the complaining, the accusations of listening to nothing but old man music, as they like to refer to it. Again my apologies for going off topic a bit, but it’s something I’m very passionate about, ironically I don’t even work in the music industry, but in medicine instead, but my love of classical music, has never left me, and I still play the piano, trombone, trumpet, tuba, both French and English horns, and I’m pathetically trying to learn the violin, but I’m absolutely useless at it, wind instruments seem to be my forte! Whatever the case, try to get your kids interested, it’s a proven scientific fact that children who grow up exposed to classical music, especially if they enjoy it and learn to playing instruments, greatly increase their neural plasticity, what more reason do you need? If only things weren’t so expensive, because I know how unaffordable most instruments are, even a cheap violin runs several hundred dollars, which isn’t much for me and a lot of people, but for most people who live on a budget and have children, it’s just not feasible, which is why we continue to raise funds every year at those concerts. Thanks for letting me ramble on and on, my gratitude for indulging me, all the best, and if you have any questions, feel free to respond to this post, I’d be happy to answer them. Many thanks, and take care.

Don't apologise for the lengthy comment, I for one thoroughly enjoyed reading it to the end. Well, who could possibly have known what your unusual thesis would develop into, becoming something so practical, inspiring, encouraging and empowering to so many people? Truly amazing! Small acorns grow up into huge oak trees! Very well done and many congratulations, not just for your perfect score, but what all the many fundraising concerts over the past decades have achieved for so many! You should be extremely proud!

I enjoyed reading your comment. I also love Classical music and introduced into my preschool program for children in my care. I always had classical music playing in the background to set different moods throughout the day and they loved it.

i don't think playing them is the hardest part of this... i mean they had to add specific amounts of water to specific sized glasses in order for them to be in tune. an excess of drop could literally make a note sharp. props to them

They're actually not quite THAT sensitive. Or I guess it is, but a few drops won't be noticeable to the ear. You just use a digital tuner (or an app); pour more water until the appropriate glass is in tune. I helped setup a few during special shows using syringe or suction device of some kind to take out water/remove; you can even 'eyeball' most smaller glasses, and just fine tune the last bits. It is a bit time consuming...most instruments can tune up in a minute (if that), but it takes a good 10-15 minutes at least when you need to tune all the glasses. Fortunately, if you leave it setup and covered you don't typically need to redo it that often.

Actually I think their cups are size tuned, I don't think they used any water at all

In this case, all these glasses are custom made for a specific pitch. They don't need water.

They first tried this outdoors but it started to rain and threw it out of tune... 😆

The last time I was in Venice, I came across a girl performing this song on glasses of water in a public square. It was beautiful. This one sounds even better, though, but I’m guessing it’s at least in part because they’re in a performance hall and have even more glasses at their disposal. Love that people have these talents!
