Lauren Cuthbertson performs the famous Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, set to Tchaikovsky's iconic score.
The Nutcracker is available to watch now - along with over 60 other extraordinary productions - on Royal Opera House Stream. Watch the whole performance now at www.roh.org.uk/tickets-and-ev...
Peter Wright’s nigh-on definitive production for The Royal Ballet ranks as one of the most enduring and enchanting versions of The Nutcracker. With its festive period setting, dancing snowflakes and enchanting stage magic, Lev Ivanov’s 1892 ballet has become the perfect Christmas entertainment, with Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous, sugar-spun music the most recognizable of all ballet scores.
Loosely based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the ballet opens with the lively Christmas party that is hosted by the Stahlbaum family, its Victorian setting captured in opulent detail by Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs. Wright’s choreography ingeniously incorporates surviving fragments of the ballet’s original material, including the sublime pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. But in emphasizing the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker Prince, the production also gains a touching subtext of first love.

Ballet dancers are the fittest and strongest of all dancers. The core strength they have to perform this sort of routine is remarkable. As far as timing is concerned, you've no idea about the way these routines are perfectly choreographed with the music. It's a classic example of pearls before swine. Look that up (assuming you can read).

Aya Bakir you have to dance on you actual toes and looking at that you can see that literally almost the entire time she’s on her toes dancing. Coming from someone that does dance and pointe, that hurts. Basically what that feels like is if you were to stand on your toes, and I don’t mean your tip toes I mean the top of your toes, and dance around like that for hours after hours practicing. Sure that was only two minutes but the amount of pointe work she did in that is what that feels like.

She makes it look so easy even though ballet is very difficult. Every movement looks perfect , she is like a doll from an animated movie. This was beautiful! I have been fascinated by ballet ever since I was a kid and I watched all the barbie movies and they always looked so elegant when they danced ballet . Even as an adult I watch them sometimes but especially the nutcracker. Those movies brings me back to a time in my life when I felt joyful. I can't dance ballet but watching it makes me feel happy and relaxed. It's amazing how we can train our bodies to be able to do these kind of choreographies and make it look magical while moving around so gracefully.

That’s the point. To make something so difficult look easy and be graceful while doing it. Ballet takes extreme discipline and training. Similar to opera or figure skating.

@@williamhanson9493 Noice troll attempt guy! You can't actually be seriously comparing ballet with the UFC because that would really mean you're that dumb. So it's fine, because you weren't serious, you were just trying to be funny. Failure to be funny is fine! You just suck at comedy, nothing to be bent out of shape for. Way better than being stupid enough to compare ballet to punching and kicking people! That would be a massive L so it's a good thing that's not what your comment is about! Phew! Dodged that bullet! Or should I say... that "ballet"? Hah! That's how we keep it topical instead of mentioning completely unrelated stuff on a video about ballet! Like out of nowhere mentioning the UFC for no reason! That's just weird! But not for a joke! If it's just a small trolling attempt, it's allowed! Can you imagine if it wasn't a trolling attempt? How stupid you'd sound by making that comparison? Heh! It's good you didn't do it! The cringe would be phenomenal! So much cringe from a comment that, out of nowhere, would try to devalue the decades of work and discipline that go into these dancers mastering their bodies, working to learn choreography, working with orchestras and bands to finetune their performances and actually performing on stage. Would be such a weird connection to make, too! But it was all a small troll attempt that failed miserably so it's alright! ^_^

I remember when I was little and did ballet. I wanted to be able to dance like this, but now I’m literally the most inflexible, uncoordinated person you’ll ever meet

Me too omg. I've grown into being nerdy and academic which I love but sometimes I miss the dance days haha. And I envy people who fit in both studying and proper exercise!

I lasted three years when I was younger and had to quit because the teacher told me I was getting fat lol.

I danced ballet for about seven years before my dance teacher retired and got replaced by someone who wasn't nearly as good, and then I stopped and have been pretty out of practice ever since. I'd love to get back into it, though--I'll never be able to dance with a professional company with my bad hips, but I'd like to get some of my flexibility back.

Same! I danced for about 10 years and then stopped and would love to go back and learn more. Wish I was more flexible and coordinated as my younger self
