This series is SO great. Really sad that it seems to be abandoned. Suikoden 1 through 3 are some of my favorite games ever.

@@ABitMoreJordan Yeah that's a shame. I liked 3 just as much as the first two and thought it made a good transition to being fully 3D. Combat was probably an acquired taste compared to the other entries but I was a big fan of the trinity system and the choice available for how you could pursue the late game.

I totally agree, everyone tend to diss the 1st game because they are obsessed with 2. I personally played 1 first and to this day I still prefer it to 2. Suikoden 2 is a polished game but I didn't like the story and characters as much as the first one. I prefer the music in 1, I prefer the war mini game.

I really love Barbarossa in this game, especially the twist at the end. It adds a lot to his somewhat absent character in such a few words.

Suikoden is one of the most brilliant games ever. I play it regularly because it always gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling. It is (compared to other RPGs) incredibly short. You can complete the game with the best ending in 16 to 20 hours - without rushing through it on purpose. The game has no side quests per se. The only optional things to do, are some mini games to recruit some characters. There is only the main story and the characters to recruit on the way. But still, when you finish it, you get a sense of accomplishment. You just experienced an epic story that never feels rushed and doesn't leave you with the feeling that there should be more. It feels really "complete" despite its short play time and having no side content. I really look forward to the remaster, that Konami unfortunately delayed... damn them making me wait longer.

It's here! Looking forward to seeing tons more Jordan! Edit: 🐒 Man, I only ever played this one once on PS1, borrowed from a friend, but it was definitely a fun ride. I didn't own a PS1 until years later, so I am glad I was able to pick it up through the Vita, along with many other classics! This whole video was *chef's kiss*. You brought up the pacing of the game so many times, and I think you did a great job with the pacing of this retrospective too. What a great launch video, looking forward to much more!

🐒 Proudly am also someone who loves the first game more. So glad I found this video. For me the moment Gremio died changed gaming for me. I was already a pretty big reader and was in my early teens. I had played games and enjoyed them but his death was the first moment I realized a story in a game could have the same impact as a great moment in a novel. I didn't even know if I liked Gremio. He was such an afterthought to me until that moment he closed himself in the poisoned room. It made me feel guilty, sad, and shocked in a way that forever changed my perception of video games as a medium for storytelling.

I am currently playing this on my Rg35XX. I never grew up with a Playstation, my parents refused to buy me one because they didn't want me to spend a chunk of my childhood playing games. My cousin did have a PS1 that time so I got to try some PS1 titles. You could say this is my first ever 'real' experience with a PS1 game and it's on a retro handheld. Needless to say, I am in love with this game. It has a certain charm I cannot seem to put my finger on. The characters and environment is full of life and I honestly find myself a bit attached with some characters. It's definitely a gem and I'm glad I got to experience a fresh playthrough of it while healing my inner childhood.

Woowoo, congrats, got almost 1k subs before the video even dropped!! As for me, 1&2 were equally as good. I never did play 3 onward, but I know that they didn't seem to strike my fancy all that much when I saw gameplay and such. And yes!! the American cover art was weird, looks like it was a willow movie poster or something. Glad they stuck to the anime renders for the cover on 2 over here in the states. 😅 Did love the strongholds and the amount of party members you can enlist in these games, which goes hand in hand with the skirmishes. So good for it's time. Didn't see anything comparable to my liking until Ni No Kuni 2, but it didn't have the party member registry like suikoden did. Great video friend. Dunno if I'll be able to watch it all, but I'll hang out for a bit and come back periodically. ✌️

Great video, subbed! Got into the series after the remaster announcement and I wish the games got more attention! Beat S1 recently and loved my time with it, Gremio/Odessa/Cleo/Kirkis/Valeria were my faves stars of destiny! ..And also got though S4+Tactics before it, going into them with no expectations definitely helped (+ wanted to play them first after hearing how supposedly bad they are) but I can definitely see how they were a step down when it came to character/writing quality compared to S1 and most likely S2/3/5 based on what I've heard but I still enjoyed my time with them

Suikoden 1 is still my favourite too im with you. I remember it being really average reviewed in playstation magazine like a 5 or 6 and i found it at my local market for 5 pounds and just absolutely fell in love with it. Suikoden 2 is better in almost every way, i can see it but i still prefer 1. Love the buildup to confronting your dad its just great.

The reasons I prefer 1 are simple. The streaming music with live instruments sounds fantastic, and the visuals are more reminiscent of watercolor paintings whereas 2 has a more comic-like apperance with realistic backgrounds. They both look excellent but 1 just has a more idyllic appearance IMO. Otherwise they're pretty similar in terms of gameplay (decent) and plot (as good as it gets)

Thank you so much for this review and I really enjoyed this game. I don’t consider 2 better than this one. I consider both games as one continuous story, that just takes place in two different regions within the same world. After all, you can recruit Tir in the second game. And yes, the soundtrack, absolutely amazing.

I love part 1. I was first introduced to it when i found it in a discount bin at a Johnny's Toy Store for $10 bucks. Actually both times that ive found it were in a discount bin still in tue factory wrap. I like part two also over all the other ones because of the sound track.

Woah, this is also my very favorite and have played many times. For me it was Gremio’s death that was the hardest for me as a kid.. it’s amazing what you take from it at different points of your life and that it has that kind sort of depth! Of course I also had to get Suikoden 2 and enjoyed it, but it’s mostly forgettable to me compared to 1… (maybe because I played it at a less influential time?) The other intriguing aspect of Suikoden is the mysterious reoccurring characters like Yuber/Pesmerga, Jeanne, etc. that you always wonder what their story is! Thanks for taking me back with your in-depth video… just finally went back and beat Azure Dreams so I look forward to that video!

Suikoden 2 is my favourite, but any Suikoden is good Suikoden. Even Suikoden 4. Honestly, even Suikoden 1 had stuff like stuff like reflections on the castle floors that I don't know if the SNES could have pulled off.

You’re right about the reflections. You can tell the SNES couldn’t handle this. But that’s only if you look at it more closely, at a glance, I think people would dismiss it

I've probably played this game about 20 times, it and Worms was the first thing I played and one of the only good memories of my ex-sister who introduced it to me and gave me my first PS console. This was a fun review even though I question your choice of team sometimes, lol! I used to talk to everyone and walk around and examine everything so I don't remember Milich's region giving me too much trouble. The inventory can be annoying but I got used to it and with some planning it's usually ok. I really love this game and now I will probably take some time and play through it once again!

I fucking love the character art in this game more than any other game. It's so distinct and the watercolour art style, esp on characters like Odessa, is so memorable

If you're wondering where you can play the game, some options are buying the physical copy, (you can play that on PS1, PS2 and PS3), downloading it on the Playstation store, which you can play on PSP or PS3, you can download an emulator and play it on computer or phone using emulator, and you can wait for the remaster which is supposed to come out for next gen consoles within the year.

Konami should open their doors to creative devs who want to take their franchises in new directions. I think it would restore some faith and credibility for them. This series passed me by in the 90's however I've been putting that right over the last month or two. A great experience. Two things: Thank you for the video. Great entertainment... Next thing: A Bit More Jordan...? Would you be open to new channel names? Yes this channel is 'A Bit More Jordan' but it's actually a bit more than even that I would argue. Plus I keep putting 'A Bit More Jordan' in air quotes whenever I'm describing it to others. Like Stephen Fry does with A Bit Of Fry & Laurie. Whatever really. Much respect on your work. And even if the channel was called 'Turkey Baster Jordan' I'd still watch. "And the crowds chanted T. B. J, as Jordan took to the stage to talk about Vandal Hearts..."

slowly buying the suikoden series, and I recently got tactics. I know it takes place between 4 and 5, but what about them all as a whole? does the story run concurrent through the whole series or is each one different? what about the psp game? I know you can get the english translation patch (which i have setup) but should i play woven web by itself or wait until I am done with 1 thru 5? and what about tierkries on ds?

You should definitely play 1-3 concurrently. I’d say 4 and 5 isn’t so important as to when you play them. But might as well go in order. The PSP and Tierkis you don’t need to worry about. I’d play those afterwards as they are quite disconnected from the whole thing.
