YAY thank you for the beginning message about how you are able-bodied. I was very able-bodied and my sustainability was so focused on the things I could do as an able-bodied human (I didn't realize I was being ableist). So when I became disabled, a big part of my identity felt unreachable. In reality, there are ways to be disabled and environmentally conscious-- it just takes some figuring out as to what one can and cannot do, by looking at the adaptive equipment one needs and what is in a zone that is doable without compromising health. It's exhausting-- being disabled is exhausting, and on top of it trying to be conscious in any other way adds to the exhaustion. But I promise it's doable, even if it's finding one tiny thing to change at a time 💜

Focusing on being sustainable as an able bodied person is not ableist. Doing anything in your life and thinking about yourself and your capabilities is not ableist. It’s okay to not consider every type of person when living in your own life. Ableist would be to be prejudiced against disabled people.

@@flychickadee I really feel this. The types of sustainable practices I engaged in have had to change as my abilities have. Some things are still well within reach for me, while others I have had to let go. For instance, single use plastic really is the best choice for an emesis bag on the go!

Apparently, shell collecting can be bad for the environment because in certain places, it's been picked empty... so much so, that crabs who grow out of old shells can't find new ones because there aren't any, so they're forced to adopt plastic bottle caps and other rubbish found on the beach. I had no idea this was even an issue until I recently saw a short on it on KZfaq. It's best to leave any and all shells and to obviously pick up plastic, to preserve the environment.

A month ago I was in the shop with underwear and socks and such stuff. Woman before me bought a lot of stuff so she could get beach bag for 1Eur. And she didn't want that, she said that she has some at home. I was surprised and saleswoman was also surprised. Who doesn't want a bag almost for free?! Now I think she was really sensible. Sometimes we are so enchanted by the promotion that we forget that we don't need something. Thanks for really good video 🙂

Absolutely - the hand fan is a good example. As a carer I know many people who rely on electric personal fans to keep them cool because they can’t physically operate their hands and arms to use a non electric one but for someone able bodied like me a manual one makes more sense because it’s not a noticeable effort to use for me (although I must admit I do own and love an electric fan as well haha) Really appreciate the accessibility/inclusivity disclaimer ❤
@e.p.e
@e.p.e Ай бұрын
There's actually a logic to electric fans if you live somewhere really hot. With hand-held ones you need to be fanning yourself constantly and the effort of doing that actually makes you hot if you do it for a long time (which you most likely will be doing if you're using it in the first place). So when it's 40º outside, it can actually be very useful. I don't have one, but friends do and it's heaven. But yeah, not really a must have, just useful if you live somewhere really hot. Also not something I would buy if I'm just visiting.

I will say, that shot dispensing cup was likely made with Americans in mind, where drinking alcohol in public places (outside of restaurants and bars) is illegal in a large number of places, regardless of if you're of drinking age. It's especially true in the American south where a lot of major beach destinations are, and also especially true of liquor (beer and wine can be treated differently). We definitely have whole lines of products devoted specifically to smuggling alcohol, haha. That being said, just make the drink in your cup before you leave like the rest of us.

the seats/umbrellas with fans and spray is definitely something that is something that is more useful in certain climates and circumstances than others, as I have absolutely used the chairs with umbrella attachments growing up in the southern part of the united states. . It's also another thing that I have used/know a lot of people who use them because they can be really useful for people who have problems regulating their body temperature independently, or who can't use manual fans because of dexterity problems, etc. I honestly wish that some of the items like that could just be made decently, rather than being relegated to medical grade expense or cheap crap

The bit about folding/festival chairs for just one event or just one season blows my mind. My current chairs are going strong for 3-4 years now (and we bought the cheapest ones in the local JYSK). We keep them in the trunk of the car and use them for camping, festivals, to store stuff while going swimming (to avoid that pesky sand, ofc :D ) or to sit anywhere while chilling in the nature. The previous pair "lived" for some 10 years or so and sure, by the end they had some issues, but nothing a decent fixing with the duct tape can't save. This year I saw some tiktoks of what's left on the field after a festival in UK and it felt so crazy to just buy all of the stuff for just one use. I felt bad when I finally had to replace my old tent (20 years in the family) with a newer one because it started to leak a bit. So weird to get a glimpse into that bubble.

as someone who has carried a few different fans in my day, i actually have some tips for anyone looking to get one that will last! - if you want to keep it in your pocket (not in a bag) you will need a shorter fan. if it's too tall for your pocket it will fall out constantly and you will lose it. -if you can stand losing some efficiency, i have one where the bits (spokes? tines? slats? idk, the bits.) are made of very thin wood, and it has held up way better than any of the others that have been made with plastic. usually the 'fabric' (if you can call it that, it's basically just a thin sheet of plastic) is glued to the bits, so if you just pick up a cheap one somewhere it will stick to itself, fall apart, get torn, etc. having the fabric does make them work slightly better, so i keep some to carry for really hot days, but the wood is my everday fan - i try to limit overconsumption, but i never feel bad about having multiple fans!! they're different sizes, i can keep one in each bag (i have adhd and the likelihood of forgetting to switch which bag the fan is in is like. 98%.) and literally every time i use one i'll have a friend or stranger ask if i have another. it's easier when the answer is yes
@b1rdeee
@b1rdeee Ай бұрын
also this might just be a thing with my personal anxiety but it can sometimes feel like drawing too much attention to yourself to whip out a fan (especially inside, as i often do living in the southern us and being fat with thick hair) but i promise you no one will care. i've never gotten a single negative comment on it, and i've been in rooms with some real assholes. honestly i rarely get any comments on it at all, but when i do it's usually 'where are those at?' (as in 'oh my god it's so hot at this function, are they providing fans??') or 'that's smart' or 'oh i like your fan!' also the motorized fans are loud as hell, so that will certainly draw more attention than a hand fan

If you are looking for a hand fan I highly recommend a nylon foldable frisbee (it’s an outer ring of thin metal covered in nylon fabric). Very portable and works pretty well. A bigger hand fan that works even better is an African circular folding hand fan. The fan is made of stiffened fabric (usually in an African style print) and leather for the handle.

Two things-- 1. How and why does that festival chair have a drink cooler?? Like it's not folding down with the chair, are you hauling cold drinks and ice separate to put in it once you pop it up??? Definitely seems like an instagram clout device that's more annoying than it's worth even if it doesn't break instantly lol. I'll stick to the wood & fabric folding chair I already have lol 2. I found a REALLY quality folding chair at a thrift store for $10 USD and I love it! I bring a towel with me to put on it because the material of the chair is a little warm for me (I have a lot of temperature disregularation problems) and then I also use the ends of that towel to wipe off my feet of grass or sand. I also recently bought an electric fan that rests around my neck & looks like headphones because it gets so hot where I live, we have very little tree coverage, and I use a mobility aid a lot, so having a hands-free option saves my backside. A lot of our buildings, my apartment included, don’t have AC, so it gets a lot of use. I specifically chose a rechargeable one so that I didn’t have to go hunting for my rechargeable batteries every time it needed recharging.

I live in SoCal by the beach and that sand wiper would actually be quite useful because the sand here is microscopic and sticky. Wiping it with a towel doesn’t help at all. That beach bag looks like it would last a long time. I almost bought one, but I generally just use a grocery style tote bag when we go to the pool. It keeps everything contained and isn't another item to keep up with.

I bought my (single person) folding chair in 2005 and it's still in a very good condition. Used it at lots of festivals and other gatherings. It also still has the writing/drawing on it since it's first year in use. I also agree with you on almost all of those "must haves", they are not something I really need.

You nailed it with this video. What a bunch of junk. I think the most problematic product to use is the armpit bleach. Ether this doesn't work at all, which would be a best case scenario here, or it would burn holes in the oh so sensitive skin under your arm. Generally skin bleaching products are quite harsh.

The whole 'create a new beauty standard and then market a product to fix it' fills me with anger. I think it would be interesting to do a deep dive some time on beauty products that supposedly fix certain issues and then research how long those 'issues' have been something we thought about. I could kind of see the use for the misting umbrella, it's like a portable version of the misting tents that festivals set up with the heat index is dangerously high. However, I also question whether it's actually usable. With a full water bottle it would be heavy (because it seems like you'd also have batteries in it, if I understand the way it works), and then how quickly do you go through the water? It seems like it wouldn't be practical for an extended length of time. Easier to have a lightweight sun parasol if you need the shade and then carry a separate bottle to spritz yourself if you need it.

Oh my gosh the UMBRELLA WITH A FAN :D NGL I was looking some up because I thought it's a wonderful idea - not to buy, but to research how that thing works. I'm sensitive to heat, it just... if the sun is high and bright on summer day, I fry like a pancake, it's a problem - so I have this one umbrella with UV layer (parasol) specifically for summer and almost always with me. Actually had to replace it because after years of use it got moldy and bad :( (and I miss it, the new one feels ... too new). To have something that also fans air on me meanwhile would be a game-changer :D but I highly doubt it's actually strong enough to make a difference. It's such a crap and like you're left with an expensive umbrella after the fan breaks.

While I totally agree about the weird shot-glass-hidden-in-a-Stanley-Cup thing being ridiculous, I can understand the motivation behind it. I lived in Denmark and have visited Scandinavia many times since and am constantly weirded out by how it's legal to drink in public - most places I've been and lived (Canada, Australia, UK, US and many more) there are strict limitations on where you can and can't consume alcohol, and generally the beach is on the no-no list, and you can absolutely be fined for it (or worse) by the cops. So developing secret beach alcoholism products I can understand.... though I still think it is stupid.

My Amazon "must haves" aren't listed here..... not that I'd expect them to be as most people aren't trying to cope with several unique severe chronic illnesses that like to play off of each other...... My list includes- benzocaine drops for the frequent sore throats that I'm hit with, luden's drops for the same reason, electrolyte concentrate drops, electrolyte concentrate powder, non-iodized table salt (sodium chloride), salt substitute (potassium chloride), magnesium drink supplement and lastly, Gatorade powder.

very true about the shell collector, most of the time I just like going to walks on the beach and looking at shells that way, personally I can't stand umberrellas, I'd rather spend good money on a nice rain racket that will last years. ew bleach for arm pits?

THe festival chair one is interesting. In America, they definitely make super cheap crappy ones. But they also make great ones. I bought a pair of chairs (not connected like you showed, but just single chairs that sold up and go in a sack) at a sporting store called Dicks over ten years ago and they are EXCELLENT. they are a little bigger than standard because my partner and I are large people, so they also withstand more weight. Just another example of investing in something better so that it lasts.

You should do a video on all the tiktok skin care where they use about 9 different creams on their faces the amount plastic waste and chemicals they are putting on their skin is insane not only that it's hoarding products letting them rot cause they rather have a huge collection to film for views rather then using it. There one woman who has over 150 bottles of shower gel from Bath and body works they never get used I find it so frustrating cause its so unesseray and wasteful. I wish natural skincare would trend rather then all these chemical infused products

WTH is the pool shade? I mean you can just simply get out of the water and sit there eh? Also the stanley shaker.... people know that they can get heat stroke more easily when they get drunk under the sun right? Just because it is convenient does not mean it is healthy.
