The empty spot on that hornbeam would make a great trunk for a small bonsai... since you asked for opinions, if it were mine I'd airlayer that top off as a new tree... it has a great shape already.

That’s some food for thought 👍

@@TheBonsaiGarden The perfect base would be where the wire stops... there's a flare at the wire that then tapers nicely.

Lovely catch-up - all your trees are looking so vibrant! Your new azaleas are stunning. They are going to be so much fun to work with in the coming months - really nice choices. With your hornbeam stumpy, I would suggest cutting back the top as you mentioned in your update. Wait until your fall pruning and it might be more obliging setting buds in the bare areas. Love your cornus! So far, I have really liked working with the C. sanguinea types which grow similarly to what you have. You should get some flower clusters in a few year too.

Those are some nice plastic basket training pots, especially since they don't have large holes as handles in the sides. What would be the best thing to search if trying to find these online? Even though I'm in a different country.

These were just storage baskets in the hardware/kitchenware section of my local garden centre.
