Nice 👍 I love the way Mike gave instructions for uphill kick turns on steeps and saving your energy safely on crampons. That chute was steep at the top... Whoa Nelly!

Dropping the skis back with the Fischer tech at the van, "Sorry for the dings .. we were just out skiing some groomers and the coverage wasn't very good." .. :-) .. There is NO way to comprehend how impossibly steep that is .. Hattrup and Petrick (and you) are ageless wonders .. so fortunate the released skis didn't get further away! .. What an adventure!!

5:10 Mt St Helen, Mt Rainer, Mt Adams, all seen from the summit of Mt Hood. 😍🥰 PNW is such a dope. Rockies to Cascade is like heaven of this planet.

many times ive skied palmer and wished that i could climb up above it, but i had to settle for some really long tranverses over towards zigzag and back. the old head monster 88 was a great traversing ski. the ski from the top of hood looks really awesome. great video thanks

It is super awesome to see Deb in the back-country! Also great to see skiing in the summer! My ultimate dream is to have an endless winter. Definitely fantasized hitting all of the peaks that were pointed out while they were on top of Hood. one could just spend the summer hitting all four.... Thanks again Deb for inspiring us to dream and act!

Awesome video; partly because hidden within it is possibly the best tutorial on kick turns as it Mike shows options and variable; rather than just an idealised perfect option. Comforting to realise I'm no worse at them than people who are overall far better skiers than me. Great tips for so many other touring aspects too.

big fan of fischer skis too; all on tele bindings; have some ranger 94 and 115; some S-bound 112 and 125 - only have the Voile Ultravector BC for the pattern based stuff on steeper. Will be interesting to see what happens at Black Diamond now.

You guys did it in good style. It's not a walkup, tho I suspect all players were in great shape! The wide angle lens helps a LOT keeping the viewers from being motion sick on the way down (no problem here!) and is more realistic from a 1st person perspective. Great video!

Glad u got to ski the top. Looking at the conditions glad u did it and not me. Now I don’t have to ski it in summer. Maybe winter instead! Every skier should ski the lift service mountain at least once in the summer! I know you’re a Fisher girl but those pin heal pieces don’t hold u in like the marker King Pin bindings do. I recommend those in gnarly chutes

When was this? The palmer still looks great. I didn't make it up this summer since I figured with all the heat waves the glacier would be in bad shape.

Absolutely great video. Love the instruction by Mike Hattrup on the kick turn. He has some excellent Backcountry ski lessons on KZfaq. Does this mean we might see you in some backcountry videos in the future? Great to see Jeff from Ski Essentials out of Stowe, VT. His ski reviews are some of the most professional and informative on KZfaq.

Have you ever met a guy named Eriks Kadzejs up at Mt Hood. He was an Atomic Ski Rep from the 80s to the 90s and then Reped for Fischer Skis in the early 2000s and then went to Stokli. He is my uncle. He was also a race coach the whole time as a Masters Coach.
@jeffreybivins5556 Жыл бұрын
This is awesome. Love that you left in the challenges and some of the instructional footage. As a gear geek always enjoy seeing what people are using. I’ve been skiing on a pair of Rangers ever since my double knee replacement 4 years ago.. I’m assuming your whole setup was Fisher. Skis, boots and bindings.

As a Portlander, I ski timberline all the time, winter into summer. in late spring/early summer when Palmer finally opens regularly, the sulfur from the fumaroles is noticeable on the upper portion of the ski runs. how noticeable was this while summiting? and do you mind commenting on the process to join a group and associated costs? great vid!

I hate to be the critic here, but someone needs to say what needs saying. I first climbed Hood at 15 as part of the Mazen’s Club’s Climbing School. I climbed it 5 more times with skis and skied down (including the morning Mt St Helens blew up). My final climb was on a very very warm January day. After that experience, I promised myself never to go there again. Why? Because ice and rock were falling down on us from Castle Craigs just above the Hogs Back. When we noticed this, we had to decide, “Is it better to continue or turn around?” We decided to keep going so we could at least see it coming at us. We were damn lucky that day, as was this group. NEVER go there on warm or icy days. NEVER go without a helmet on your head. NEVER take flimsy mountaineering gear that won’t stay on your foot , or perform when you need torsional strength in a ski. And, NEVER think you can go and return safely without training and proper climbing gear. At 69, and having grown up on Mt Hood, I’ve seen every death on the mountain since 1958.

Congrats Deb. I think I can say for sure I won’t be following in your footsteps there. One thing I was wondering, though: Would higher DIN settings have been a good idea? I’ve never been on telemark skis though, so I don’t even know if they have DIN settings.
@DebArmstrongSkiStrong2 жыл бұрын
Yes I needed a higher din setting. I ski with a low setting on my alpine skis. I wasn't thinking and didn't set these high enough.

We wore helmets
@markthomasson50772 жыл бұрын
But not on the way up?
@DebArmstrongSkiStrong2 жыл бұрын
@@markthomasson5077 yes did wear them on the way up when we moved into the area where the pitch was such that a rock would roll. Correct, we did not wear helmets below skinning, it was not steep.
@Jonathanmarcambrose2 жыл бұрын
Looks like you could use some leashes or brakes!
@DebArmstrongSkiStrong2 жыл бұрын
Fair comment. Of course we had breaks. In this moment/situation of pitch and surface a leash may be worth consideration. However with a different kind a fall a leash can pose different problems. Take care.
