i have been a mechanic for 30 years, it used to be snap on, mac etc ruled our tool boxes. now sunex and other tool companies are making tools and warranty on the tools as good or better than tool trucks have. This 3/8 set is in every field truck of mine now and plus the 1/2 inch drive sets. Awesome quality and price i recommend highly any beginning mechanic or anybody needing a good quality tool to look at Sunex for tools.

00JJ ...Today we will be reviewing old man Sedgwick’s impact wrench, because mine is held together with duct tape. Let’s see if we can get a lug nut off the opossum van. Well, it appears we’re having technical difficulties with the compressor and hose. So, we’re just going to get a hammer and a wrench.

Almost all of my sockets are Sunex impact's, I bought them with the idea in mind that as I broke or lost these one at a time I would replace them with Snap On. I still haven't replaced any of them and I did exactly what you talked about by cutting the lids off, they make great organizers in your box drawer without having to buy additional hardware.

I like the tight tolerances, I just use a metal brush to "clean" a scaled fastener first and now I have the advantage of a better fitting socket! If you work on your own Cars, trucks, boats and other machines as I do and if you are meticulous you will appreciate the closer tolerances. When I encounter damaged or scaled fasteners I replace them! Now if you are doing a job for money and / or don't care about everything being a close to perfect as possible then the extra close tolerances may not be as beneficial.

I was wondering when you were going to do a video on these after seeing them in the grey pneumatic video. I actually came across them because they of the size range and they don't skip sizes. I had them shipped to the UK because nobody else does anything close over here. I do like my Sunex impact socket set for the most part. The one thing that I have noticed in the 1.5 years I’ve been in industry, working at an independent shop, is that my 19mm, 21mm, and 22mm sockets tend to stick to slightly messed up lug nuts. This is a pretty consistent problem. When I switched those 3 sizes for Williams 19mm, 21mm, and 22mm impact sockets, I have had zero issues with the lug nut getting stuck in my impact sockets. I believe Williams is Snap On’s industrial line (but much much cheaper in price,) but the difference in quality is definitely noticeable as compared to my Sunex. I have still kept my Sunex impact sockets, but rarely use them anymore since my Williams impact sockets have yet to have an issue sticking to lug nuts. Good reviews as always. Thank you.

I wish they made the lid attach via a snap-in hinge and mold the top where the bottom can sit firmly on it. This way you could stack the bottom on the lid for your toolbox drawer and allow for easy and repeated quick assembly for mobility. But, I was planning to make Sunex my goto impact socket brand for the future anyways.

@jameannohere
@jameannohere 8 жыл бұрын
I have a set of these, that I use professionally, sockets and can tell you from first hand these sockets do go a long way for the price. Have broken one yet over the last year and I had gotten them used. They will handle my I.R air run all day. They do not, as you say, replace a set of chrome sockets in a professional environment. This do to the wall thickness variations from one socket to another. Some sockets next each other in size have the same O.D. and are made with different bolt sizes.
@RealToolReviews
@RealToolReviews 8 жыл бұрын
+jameannohere I agree that chrome sockets are still thinner....however, many people (especially DIYers) would easily be able to get their repairs done solely with this set. They are much thinner than 1/2" impact sockets & work fine with hand tools. However, you are correct....comparing chrome sockets to impact sockets....the chrome sockets are the thinner ones.

I bought the 3/8" set. great set btw. but the 1/4" and the 1/2" sets seems to overlap intensively you only get like 6 sockets that arent in the 3/8" set. what are your thoughts on this?
@RealToolReviews
@RealToolReviews 8 жыл бұрын
If you place a 10mm 1/4", 3/8", & 1/2" drive socket next to each other, you'll see a massive size difference.....although they are the same "size", they won't work in the same situations or conditions.....many times a 1/4" drive socket will work where the others just won't fit.....and etc. It is better to have overlaps, since it depends greatly on what you are working on, to determine which impact, air ratchet, etc that you will be using.

@GoAmericaTeamSquad
@GoAmericaTeamSquad 7 жыл бұрын
I bought the metric set and I used them for the first time today: I don't feel that a chamfer makes any difference. It mushrooms out quicker but I'm not gonna sweat it, it's not like I payed $400 for the set I don't really expect, nor care about one as it doesn't affect anything.
@Minmatar1337
@Minmatar1337 7 жыл бұрын
I ended up buying the master set a month ago and am happy with it. Can't beat the price, and in the couple times I've pulled a socket from it for impact use it fit snug and did the job. I still wish it had the chamfer - just would be the final touch on a great low cost set - even HF impact sockets have that. Takes a second or two to line up the anvil precisely but I'm not complaining - more important is just having a set with no skips for when I need it instead of borrowing a tool or going to the store.

You stated Sunex says it is ok to use their impact sockets with hand tools; however, other companies will flat out deny claims. Can you explain why it is bad to use impact sockets with hand tools to begin with? I would have thought that impact sockets are designed to handle more torque/abuse, therefore using it with hand tools would be better than chrome? Thanks!
@kissmyassonice
@kissmyassonice 8 жыл бұрын
the reason you use a impact socket is because it is a softer metal then a chrome socket. And the constant force from hand tools will wear out the sockets faster. The chrome handles the constant force better but doesn't handle the impact as well
@RealToolReviews
@RealToolReviews 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Wang Always read warranties......many are specifically designed to never actually pay a claim......SUNEX is excellent and doesnt play the same games as others. Personally I dont see why under normal use an impact socket would fail with hand tools.....other than extensions (I have broken impact extensions with a ratchet), but I warn people so they dont accidentally void their warranties. Chrome sockets can literally explode if used on an impact.....never a good idea, even in an emergency.

The cons to this set and the Tekton set is the case is a 1 piece and will break over time of continual use, and the small sockets are not friendly if you have to put them in a hole to get to the bolt or nut. they are too thick and do not narrow down they stay close to the same thickness all the way to the end. this does not affect the bigger sockets but it does the smaller 1's I returned them and went with Grey Pneumatic. around the same price. When you goto remove a sunken bolt or nut in the smaller sizes you will see what I mean!

K Lewis i believe the majority of impact sockets are like this. Sunex makes thin walled 1/2 sockets (i use them for wheels) for stuff that my impact sockets dont fit on i have a set of scrap harbor freight sockets i use. works everytime almost.

I know Cornwells part numbers the first couple letters tells what the manufacturer is. They have a a lot of Astro rebranded stuff along with numerous other brands, I’m considering buying more stuff online by the actual original manufacturer and less of the rebranded tool truck brands for much higher prices.

so which set do you prefer tekton or sunex?
@RealToolReviews
@RealToolReviews 8 жыл бұрын
+arnulfo rosas I think that they are both great quality. They do not offer the same sets, so it really isnt a fair fight....since some people prefer large master sets & other people like smaller sets. I personally carry the Tekton 4883 set in the vehicle 365 days/year along with a cordless impact....it is small (relatively speaking) and fits in a the stowaway. That being said, it only includes deep well 1/2" drive sockets & could not do the things that this set could (or vise versa). The main thing to keep in mind, is to get complete sets with no missing sizes & a good warranty (which Tekton & Sunex both have).

Would you recommend sunex over tekton?

If you want larger sets......Sunex is ideal for large complete sets & TEKTON is ideal for small complete sets (such as all 1/2" metric deep like the #4883). Both have excellent warranties.

So, you can't use impact sockets with hand tools but can use them with much more powerful impact drivers?? can anyone explain me the science behind this?

I grant you that there will be torque (mechanical) loss with an adapter or an extension, but no one has ever told us how much that is: 5%? 10%? 15%? 25%? I suspect it will also vary between shallows and deeps, as well as by application. Is it enough to get excited about, or is this just FYI? It's like telling me there's a bomb in an empty football stadium that's about to go off. If I know it's 10 feet away from me here in the home team's end zone, then yes, I should be concerned. But if it's up behind the end zone at the other end of the stadium, somewhere in the nosebleed seats, maybe I don't care as much. Can you give us a rough estimate of the potential loss, or perhaps run a few examples for argument's sake? I imagine you have equipment available to you that could measure such a loss, using plain impact sockets (i.e., that don't have a swivel end). Thanks.

What you mentioned in the video about torque loss is not true. The torque transferred from the impact wrench to the fastener, using the same wrench, and the same final socket size, will be the same no matter what is in between them. Where there would typically be a difference is when you are using an impact wrench with a larger drive vs an impact wrench with a smaller drive for the same size socket, but this is just because larger drive wrenches are designed with more torque as the larger spindle can handle it.

Good point, the torque from the impact wrench disappears into the abyss, thereby violating the laws of physics of conservation of energy, but only in the Real Tool Reviews garage :D
