I’ve been using ADV since 2014 and honestly couldn’t care less where it’s made or if it’s rebranded. It’s cheap, it works and the Matco guy shows up around here. In 8 years of using ADV professionally I’ve had to warranty one socket and it was my fault that it broke. I’m gonna keep using ADV and I’ll buy more as I need it because it works

Taiwan has huge tool making factories, chip factories, they have great steel composition formulas. But they have different levels of production, 20 years ago Snap On made Kobalt tools for Lowes, same factories, but different steel and tolerance levels.

Another thing they can do is bin by tolerance. The tools can be exactly the same, except the ones that have the best dimensional accuracy will be binned as the premium brand and the ones furthest out of spec will be the lesser brand. The tooling used to manufacture eventually wears out and loses accuracy. There are also lots of adjustments required to maintain high tolerances on all dimensions. Rather than scrapping the rejects and retooling the machine as soon as parts start going out of spec, they can keep running the machine to produce the lower quality brand. Both tools/parts might look identical upon close inspection, but they will not be. The only way to tell would be to take precision measurements and know the bin cutoff specs. A good example of this is coin minting. The first coins that come off of new dies will be binned “first strike”. These have the highest level of detail which is considered premium.

Years ago I worked in a beef jerky factory. Many different brands, all made differently. Even though the same machines made the jerky. They didn't taste the same.

There are many tire brands, but only a few or so manufacturers. The fuels coming out of the refineries are the same, but the additive packages make it different for the fueling stations. There are white-label parts for vehicles. There is a handful of vehicle battery manufacturers, but a ton of brands. It all comes down to the specs. Is there SOME of the stuff that is the same? Absolutely. But don't confuse it as being the case for ALL things. Great comparison on the sockets. This really shows how close manufacturers can get, but still be just different enough if you pay attention. Do your research. Purchase what is best for your needs and fits your budget. Have a good one!

From a Matco dealer. He told me straight up that the gearwrench ratchets are the same internals as the Matco soft grip ratchets. Back in the day they were owned by the same company, had the same patent number and all. After researching for myself it was true. So I get where you're coming from that tools are misleading and one comparison doesn't mean it's all true across the board

for old chrome sockets at swap meets etc, Look for craftsman with a date staming of G2 or higher, supposed to be flank drive clones. work great.

I have a 3/8 impact socket set and impact swivel socket set and I absolutely love them. I have been beating the piss out of them and they hold no problem. For a fraction of the price of Matco I’ll keep going with Sunex

Be been using some Grey Pneumatic impact sockets at work. Have 1/2 and 3/8 drive sets. For the price they hold up to heavy daily use very well.

Always leave a like and an comment helps too and I knew to really look at package to see where made sure has some things made in India which is lesser quality than China be care what you buy off a truck especially matco ask about the warranty on them they vary tool to tool

I'm sure one guy has a better 18mm than someone else. Just list THE BEST OVERALL QUALITY KNOWING they might have a dud #6 slotted screw driver. Hell. Snap-On never had ALL great tools. The UPS guy just dropped off a Wright socket I had on backorder today. They are made 30 minutes away from where I live. I'm a home DIY guy that races cars so I don't want tool truck stuff that I could never warranty. If I ever break a Wright socket I can just walk in the front door of their headquarters/plant and get a new one. lol

Started buying tools in 1976, MATCO which I started buying in 1981 was originally owned by MAC, as it was the tool box manufacturing and private labeled tool buying side of MAC. When the family who owned MAC had a dispute one side took MATCO and left, to then start having Wright tool and Bonney Tool start producing sockets, ratchets private labeled from Wright and wrenches from Bonney. In the early 90's when MATCO was bought by the same company who owned Armstrong, that is when Armstrong started producing the sockets and ratchets for MATCO. Having US made Craftsman from the 60's (was my father`s), 70's, 80's and 90's, Armstrong from the same time frame and MATCO tools from the 90's I'll state a lot of similar features but small differences such as tolerances, finish - better chrome on Armstrong and even better on MATCO. For reference MAC and Marcos toolboxes in the late 70's and 80's even had the same part numbers and series names. Also from a metallurgical standpoint Armstrong and MATCO used better steel alloys, used better breaching- which can be seen by the tooling marks. So saying Sunex doesn't produce ADV maybe misleading as they just may not be made to identical specs. Same as how Chevy, Buick and Cadillac are building cars on common chassis but better options as you move up the GM line.

Great content CP. There is so much rebranding these days it is near impossible to tell who makes what. As you know I like my SK, Wright, Mayhew etc. Many of my favorites rebrand others tools to the point where it is hard to tell. Then you get a bunch of companies that don't make anything, but rebrand everything. I know you took measurements etc, but even at that how can you tell the difference???

Good videotape CP! The problem is matco is 70% the cost of Snap-On but the Matco tools are made in Taiwan vs the US made Snap-On. Snap-On is my first choice but I try to never buy rebrands. I do like the Matco pro line sockets though and I like Matco ratchets.

All good points. Just because a tool looks similar, does not make it a rebrand. In some cases, these tools may very well come from the same manufacturer. But at the end of the day, the Brands are giving them the specs. In many cases, brands can't even produce some of these tools on their own if they wanted too, because of patents. Even if you can license the patents, it's often not worth re-tooling their own plants after royalties. There are many variables to consider when it come to manufacturing tools. Most people cannot wrap their head around this. Even if a tool looks identical to the naked eye aside from branding, doesn't mean it's the same tool. You can also have two tools come out of the same facility that look vastly different, yet have compatible performance and reliability.

Good video, I would like to see more wright tool on the channel, IMO that’s one of the last great legacy brands still out here with their nose to the grindstone releasing USA made tools and they make phenomenal impact sockets….speaking of rebrands they’ve manufactured quite extensively for company’s that were slapping their logo on wright tools

CP! I’m trying to decide between spending big bucks for max precision torque combination wrenches, or craftsman v series which are 99% identical to the precision torques. I’ve been told they’re coming from the same factory off of the same assembly line. Should I spend more on the Max precision torques? Or save cash for almost the same thing with craftsman’s v series? Anyone else feel free to chime in on this, I appreciate all the advice!

If you were going to get one set of deep impact sockets what brand would you get?

I love watching your tool videos! They are a very thorough description of the product. But I have just one question. You have all these impact sockets and other products you show in these videos and say they are awesome. But what i see is 98% of them show no wear on them, and the ones that do have allittle dirt on them and thats all. I have been a mechanic for over 20 years. and the first couple of times, you use an impact socket they start showing wear. Either in the very slight rounding on the square end, or they start losing their color inside the hex end. And after about a month they deffently show they have been used, and in no way look like a new socket no matter what brand it is. Every video i see with all your sockets shows very very low wear on almost all of the sockets. If its just to show new sockets to say what you think about them, i completely understand. I am not doubting you work on cars/trucks at all and your capabilities. I just see ALLOT of brand new tools with no wear and thats it. Sorry if im wrong.

What people typically don't get is the fact just because something is produced at the same factory does not mean it's the same. Hell Harbor Freight Pittsburgh Professional sockets "could" be very well made at the same factory as Matco ADV. Each brand has engineers visiting the manufacturer to ensure quality for their products built to said brands specifications. Higher end brands go through stricter QC too.

Those adv sockets definitely don't hold up the finish my most common sockets none of them you can read what size they are anymore
