I was really into the Beach Boys in 1970, but while going off to college that fall, the Sunflower release slipped under my radar. Peaking at #151 it quickly disappeared from the record stores. I ordered an 8-track copy which took weeks to arrive. I was certainly blown away by Sunflower, but was pretty much alone in the wilderness with my little 8-track tape. Among my peers at the time the Beach Boys weren't hip, and no one was listening to them. They only talked about them as has beens. But I knew what I knew..... and I knew in 1970-71 that Sunflower was a classic....the record charts be damned! It warms my heart now for the world to finally discover this great masterpiece. If Brian had just only written "This Whole World", that would be enough for a lifetime. It's right up there with "Good Vibrations" and "California Girls"in my book. "Slip On Through" and "Forever" place Dennis in league with brother Brian. Thanks for your videos, you guys are amazing!

@@matthewhartzmusic1 Matthew, I have a question: In 1986 I had the privilege of being backstage with the Beach Boys at Sandstone Amphitheatre near Kansas City. I talked to Carl that night, the first of several times that I met him. On top of a case or amp backstage, a roadie had poured out a box of Carl's guitar picks. I picked one up and noticed that Cookie Wilson was printed on the pick. Since there were dozens of them I accidentally stuck one in my pocket. I've always wondered about the nickname "Cookie". Do you have anything on the origin of that? BTW, I've always considered myself as an above average Beach Boys aficionado, but I've learned plenty from your podcasts.....and for such a young man! (I remember the Beach Boys from '64, but became hard core in '67). Thanks for your knowledge, keep up the good work!

ABSOLUTELY resonate 1000% with you, Phil Dickson, on this! I went off to college that same fall. I bought the LP but didn't play it much. None of my peers liked the BBs either! They were always seen as just another "oldies band." The ONLY thing that mattered at that time was: "Are The Beatles staying together?" In early '71, the KEY album was George's "All Things Must Pass." Pretty much, nothing else mattered...among my friends. Ironically, the only song that I initially noticed on "Sunflower" was "Deidre." (Nowadays it seems like a pleasant but less-significant song, when looking at the entirety of this amazing LP.) "This Whole World" IS up there with Brian's greatest efforts! This album for me is their best overall, taken as a group effort. Everyone contributes! Commercial "failure" ? Just as with "Pet Sounds," chart position and sales figures didn't tell us ANYTHING meaningful.

Forget Pet Sounds.... Sunflower is their real masterpiece! Pet Sounds is great, However, it is essentially a Brian Wilson solo album with a little help from his friends.

Pet Sounds has gotten all the recognition, which it deserves, but Sunflower is easily the bands’ masterpiece. Every song is unbelievably perfect and it’s become my favorite Album of all time since my very first listen. How this failed is beyond me.

As a 15 year old i bought the sunflower album in 1970. I had all the other albums from th sixties. Sunflower is one of my fave Beach Boys album. It wasn't cool to be a fan in 1970.

Love Sunflower but never liked 'Tears in the morning' or 'Got to know the woman' much. Replace them with 1969 'Big Sur' and 'San Miguel' and it's even better. 'All I wanna do' is in my Top 3- maybe even number 1 😃. Great podcast fellas

15:22 I think them being family was both positive and negative. Mainly bc they love each other but like any other family there are times that you get in arguments. It doesn’t remove the love but just don’t want to deal with them.
