Episode 5
This week we make our way past the pottery capital of England Stoke on Trent, pass a very sad sunken boat and crash through a rather low bridge destroying our bike in the process! After a lovely cruise (not including the crumpled bike) we make it to Burlaston for some much needed peace and calm.

Hi Guys. Love your stories of boat life. A long time ago when I was single I looked into a narrow boat, spent nearly two years researching. One thing and another I decided to shelve the idea but wished now seeing your videos have bought back fond memories of the days I spent contemplating this lifestyle. I take my hat to you both and Allan you are a inspiration to us all. I am now retired and live with my wife in a tiny bungalow here in Scotland with our cocker spaniel Poppy who is a show breed of 5 year who we had from a puppy. First and last ever puppy as we always had rescue dogs. We own a caravan that is called a Eriba (pop top and is one of the smallest caravans on the market. As we are retired we are away for around 4 months a year travelling in the uk, we like you love to visit the lovely places we stay near when we are pitched up and spend up to 5 days in a site but we only use CL sites no more then 5 vans and no facilities. We are on a budget so we cook all our own food etc. on the subject of food, we know how difficult it is to cook good food so I am going to point you to a group ai set up on Facebook that is dedicated to a small oven that is called a Remoska. We have lots of members that are on narrows boats, off grid living in campers etc that benefit from this fantastic oven. Don’t worry I don’t sell them or promote them. I have over 6000 members that offer advice, share recipes and above all love to chat about cooking with this oven. Take a look and join if you wish you will be made welcome. 😊

I am thoroughly enjoying your videos of your life on a narrowboat. The launch of the garlic bread was hilariouus, especially when Ben admitted trying to think of a way to rescue it for a few seconds! That was a touching story about naming your cat Alan. We have a cat that looks so much alike they could be twin sisters. We named ours Rommie (from Andromeda, the old TV show).

Love the old infrastructures . The skills and ingenuity of the bricklayers back then would have been incredible to see. None of the modern machinery, conveniences and weather proof clothing of today. My granddad was a skilled foreman carpenter Halifax, N.S., Canada and freezing rain was characteristic of the times. My grandmother would have to chisel the ice off him to remove his clothes. He lined his jacket with old newspapers for insulation. He’d have to walk miles carrying his heavy toolbox including a ferry ride to various jobs sites. I can visualize the same hardships involved there to build what we take for granted. The beauty of these canal systems are in the people who built them. Appreciate your efforts in sharing it.

Thanks so much for your comment David! Wow, that is amazing, so interesting to hear about your grandad! It is incredible what was built back then with what they had. Some of the long tunnels on the canal system are mind blowing to think how they were made. A couple we passed through recently, 3.5 miles long and another nearly 2 miles!. Thank you again for taking the time to tell your Grandad's story 😊

And if you had gone down the Caldon canal, you would have also met some very low bridges and had some similar weird experiences! I also felt uncomfortable when stopping overnight there, kids tapping on the boat late evening. Lets just say Stoke has character and leave it at that! Great vlog guys, oh and leave the socket on the gearbox bolthead as you will always be able to remove it. Enjoy Stone, plenty of facilities and shops for stocking up, great place :)

Really enjoying the videos! My partner and I have been saving for a boat for a while and plan to live aboard in a year or 2. I make/sell sketchbooks on etsy alongside work and plan to keep it up on the boat- I was wondering if you have any difficulty with ordering supplies/posting/return addresses for your shop while cruising?
@BenandEmily
@BenandEmily 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks so much! 😊 So happy to hear you're enjoying the videos and that you're planning to get a boat. For supplies, sometimes it can be tricky but most of the time i can get what i need delivered from Ebay with the click and collect service, just find a local click and collect shop near where we are or will be moving to. Some stuff I have to get delivered to a friend or relative and drive over to pick parcels up. Posting is fine, i use royal mail click and drop and just drop at a post office or letter box. For returns I use a friends address and occasionally go and pick anything up. I hope that helps! 😀 Good luck with your boat plans! 🌟

It would be nice to see the episode number at the start of the title rather than having to open it up to see where I am. Also I know that skipping an add means you do not get the miserable stipend from the advert so I endure them as long as they are not 2 minute sagas. However following the wisdom of vloggers such as ''Cruising the cut'' placing them at the end or beginning means I for one will tolerate them. Adds midway through the story get skipped ASAP and it deters me from staying with the story.😎

Jus’ a thought, and maybe am bein’ a bit stoopid, but…Would it not make mo’ sense to go on ahead with the van, somewhere ROUGHLY (give or take a mile) where you plan to stay. That way the walk back to the boat, or cycle ride when u get the bike fixed will ALWAYS be closer, as the boat is travelling towards you as you head to it? Or do you not really have a clue where u are stopping 🤷. Peace Yogi
