Matt you literally picked one of the greatest examples ever. I've played and beaten Tales of the Abyss a billion times and Luke's character development is one of the most satisfying I've ever seen. :')

Sigismund, The Emperor's Champion Well I wouldn't say that. o.o Everyone had something to offer and had great character, ESPECIALLY Natalia. Much like Luke, she was entitled and a little spoiled but that changed too. :)

The only thing I disliked about Luke's character development is all of the hate he got from the rest of the party because of the fall of Akzeriuth. If you analyze the entire situation/story of Luke's life, you realize that it wasn't really his fault.
@tailedgates9
@tailedgates9 7 жыл бұрын
That's true too. But I think the major flaw behind Luke's personality was he always blamed everyone else, or the fact he was kidnapped instead of taking responsibility for his actions. While he was dealt a bad hand, he couldn't keep saying "It's not my fault" forever.
@MarlonMacielBrando
@MarlonMacielBrando 7 жыл бұрын
But it actually wasn't his fault. :*spoiler*: He was manufactured and controlled for that specific end, the use of Hyperresonance as a destructive force. Granted, he would still have to come out of denial and work doing good things to whoever was affected by his actions (as he is no inanimate "gun") to balance what happened *because of him*, but the party (except Tear) treated him like he wanted people to die.

They mention canon Persona 4 protagionist's personality is picking the all weird options, but Devil Survivor 2 gave you all KINDS of fucking weird options to do, and then the anime decided to make him Shinji Ikari.

I disagree with Liam in that a protagonist should surprise you, there are plenty of great protagonist that never surprise me but are perfect none the less (I.E. Guts, Edward Elric, Alana & Marko, Josuke Higashikata, Yusuke Urameshi, Spike Spiegle, most video game protagonists, The Sandman).

Zero Spineslash I think you can argue in the case of Yusuke that he did surprised you at the beginning, where you see this boy having sacrificed himself to save a kid, then, you flashback to earlier that day and your surprised that such a selfless act was done by such an ass.

I think it depends on what you consider a surprise. Like, Josuke's high pain tolerance surprised the fuck out of me several times, for instance.

In my opinion, I don't think that good protagonists require character development. You can make a character where he/she doesn't change throughout the story but is still a compelling character via backstory or personality.

TellTale suffers from people liking some of their characters, simply because of their forced archetypal choices. Kenny goes through some rough shit but he eventually turns full villain, no matter how hard you try to keep him happy (be it Lee or Clem), and the game still gives you options and choices to treat Kenny like he's still a human being, when he completely heel turns into a inhuman psycho.

in my humble and obviously correct opinion, the protagonist should be able to, in some measure, stand up for themselves. the one exception i can think of for this is if the story is from the perspective of someone who is NOT the hero. if it's from the point of view of a hanger-on or lesser sidekick, then having the protagonist be worthless is fine. but if your hero can't defend themselves without their hand being held, that's a problem. somewhat ties in to pat wanting semi-competent protagonists, though i'm fine with them being an idiot as long as it's interesting and the other characters support the hero's lack of brain cells. for an excellent example of an idiot hero who's competent correctly and not worthless while also not being a mary sue, look at luffy of one piece. dude can't reason his way out of a narrow hallway and i love him all the same.

There have been some protagonists whose purpose was essentially to be defenseless, as a way to both humanize them and to make a villain look horrible and powerful. One good example I can think of is Winston from George Orwell's "1984". He is broken by the end of the novel, and is executed while thinking he is in love with Big Brother.
@Yal_Rathol
@Yal_Rathol 7 жыл бұрын
BLACKIESBOY certainly, but notice i differentiate the hero and the protagonist. they can be the same character, but they don't have to be. i've never read 1984, but from what i understand, the story doesn't have a hero. there are no heroes, only villains and evil. so having a protagonist be useless is fitting for such a scenario. plus, considering it's a political novel rather than one for fun, it's rules are slightly different than a for-fun fiction story, in my opinion. always remember, "every rule has an exception, including this one".
@EmpressTiffanyOfBrittany
@EmpressTiffanyOfBrittany 7 жыл бұрын
Erm, I think Winston classifies as a hero. Sure, he is a member of the ruling party, but he is discontent and looking to rebel, and his humanity is often contrasted to the insensitiveness of other party members. I think his girlfriend would classify as a heroine as well.

This question is inherently nonsensical as a protagonists worth depends not only on their personality, but on the perspective of your story, what the story is about/trying to convey, how they react to their setting, their purpose in the story, how their actions/thoughts are conveyed, and the viewers preconcieved biases. Someone as smart as plague should know better than to pose a question in a vacuum.

Drew Moyer plague very intentionally fucks with people and poses questions in order to get data, rather than an answer. it's unlikely that this question was meant literally and much more likely that he had some other goal in mind when asking it.

for me the best protagonist is a silent one but with enough dialogue options that you can tailor him however you like otherwise characters that have their own personalities that you can still influence a little bit their behavior

A good protagonist should have some change or growth in their story whether it's just a different out look on life from what they started with. Or even having a dangerous edge towards them due to what happens to them in story. A perfect hero is terrible because there's no flaws to make the good aspects shine, one of the many reasons why Superman sucks most of the time.
@alucardyoici
@alucardyoici 7 жыл бұрын
it depends like 8 bit theater is a webcomic where the main heroes actively refuse to grow or change their ways and it works because to them their ways are the best no matter how many people they kill for their own desire, they even thwart the wole "you must cleanse your flaws" cliché by being true to themselves and killing the wise avatar that wants them to grow. Like how bad would a story goes if it ends with superman going "you know what? murdering babies is now a ok in my book" your heroes suck if they have such a weak hold on their principles
@li-limandragon9287
@li-limandragon9287 7 жыл бұрын
That's not what I'm saying, I'm not saying heroes should murder babies or be asshole all the time. But if you know that they have the power to kill babies and do evil shit, you appreciate them more when they do work for the side of good. But with Superman (and Captain America to a lesser extent). You know they won't break their their boyscout mindset for anything. So it severely limits the path they walk on the moral line. The best heroes are the ones, we see get tempted, but break though.
@alucardyoici
@alucardyoici 7 жыл бұрын
Li-Li Mandragon we can't be happy they do good we have to be happy that they don't do evil? Like it's not even killing babies is that apparently the heroes goes above and beyond when he the idea of killing babies cross his mind he ignores it. If the moral compass is so broke that it looks like it can go either way every stories then why bother with the protagonist either he turns evil and we should have seen it coming or he still pull through and it's until next crisis of faith.

+alucardyoici No when righteous good is all he does, it harms the character more than help him. It's why there's so many evil Superman stories, cause it's simply more gripping than just being right and good all the time. Spiderman is one of the best heroes around and he acts like a selfish jerk for the majority of his appearances. And is justified for why he does act like that, cuase he one of the most human heroes, *Trust me*, the greatest protagonists and the most liked ones walk a fine line on morals. The ones who who seem perfect and righteous. Are the ones more likely to commit horrible crimes out of nowhere
@felixdaniels37
@felixdaniels37 7 жыл бұрын
Li-Li Mandragon Spider-Man does NOT act like a selfish jerk. He's only been selfish once in his life and he spends the rest of his life trying to atone for it. Your entire argument is nonsense because it's clear you've never touched a comic book in your life, let alone actually read a Superman story.

For me, the worst type of protagonist has no better example than Ryoma Echizen, from "The Prince of Tennis" anime. I've never read the manga, but in the anime he is UNGODLY AWFUL. He's set as this huge badass in tennis by defeating some douchebag seniors in two separate occasions. But then he proceeds to defeat EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS OPPONENTS, many of which should trump him in various areas (be it on stamina, reach or experience, each of which makes ENOURMOUS difference in a tennis match). His matches always feel like there are no stakes, because you feel that he'll just win like always. F*ck, the only times he loses are f*cking implied losses! Even the team's captain matches were greater, and he was set up to be more of a badass than Ryoma!

MarlonMacielBrando Dude, I saw one episode and I'm not even sure if I want to continue. Ryoma is so boring and predictable and unbeatable at tennis, I don't feel excited to watch him. I feel like the only way I'll continue, is if there's going to be awesome, fun side characters. Or other main characters that are more enjoyable....

Most western RPGs have the exact same problem as Japanese ones with empty protagonists, in that your character still has no identity or voice, except now they just hold up a sign when prompted; see The Elder Scrolls for games where the protagonist is essentially nothing despite having a lot to potentially say. A lot of people make up their own, but that's just shitty storytelling; you don't make your player tell your story for you, even if they're okay with that. What a player projects onto their character should still manifest in some fashion, and it also should make some fucking sense in the context of the story. Another common trap western RPG writers fall into is to make everything important that the protagonist does be while you're not controlling them. See damn near any Bioware game for examples of how badly you can fuck all of the above up, and more. I personally prefer a protagonist who has an established personality and motivations, but with lots of choice available to the player as to how they react to what's put before them during the course of the game. You become more invested in them because you're still making the major decisions -- or at least are given the illusion that you are -- but you then see how those decisions play out and further shape an existing mold; you feel like you're guiding the story, rather than watching it. Telltale is an okay example of this; they stumble because their games too frequently make it obvious that it really doesn't matter what you do along the way, just at the end -- and even then the outcome may be the same -- so unless it's hooked you, you've got people who fuck around in their games just to see how amusing it is for the rest of the game to awkwardly go around it, but in general, they do a good job of involving you in the narrative.

I enjoyed Oblivion and Skyrim a lot ,but I agree when it comes to emotional investment in a character. Because of that I really couldn't get super invested with the characters. Same problem with a lot of visual novels where, they try to make the charater as much as a self insert as possible ,but then they still have their own shitty personality so it just ends up being a really shitty character you can't get behind.
@MiaowGaiGar
@MiaowGaiGar 6 жыл бұрын
Right. A lot of developers feel like a character with as much empty space as possible for the player to project to is the best road to investment, but the truth is any decently written character with generous input from the player can get the player invested in them; even if the player doesn't like that character on first impression, if you can let them lean in a direction within that spectrum via choice, the player can still fill the gaps on their own, come to like the character because of what they put into them, or even come to like them because that input let them get to that point. And as you alluded, a lot of people can still enjoy a game despite them having essentially no protagonist; I could nitpick Skyrim's flaws for days, but there's still enough outside of that that people like it anyway, or didn't even notice the things I nitpick -- Pat's a great example, because he _didn't_ notice -- but the games would still be stronger with more effort on that front.
