Nintendo is pulling yet another classic Nintendo Move with the recently revealed Super Mario 3D All-Stars. A collection of Super Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy are coming to Switch with a Nintendo-flavored catch.
Because Nintendo manufactures scarcity despite claims to the contrary, Super Mario 3D All-Stars will only be available until early next year. Yes, that includes digitally as well! Because Nintendo is Nintendo.
This will also be true of the new Battle Royale, Super Mario 35, which will also disappear at the end of March 2021. Because Nintendo is Nintendo.

@Mick Salo Yeah, i wasn't trying to say it would be good for them to lower prices. I was saying that they seem to be a tad more responsible, make a superior product, and don't undercut themselves. They sell games at a value they believe in for their specific console. You can argue the value but when you have people playing their games, well for decades, and even this gen for hundreds of hours it's hard to argue the value point. Especially today when you get the privileged of paying full price for a game so you can pay more money in micro transactions and stripped content. Personally, I'd like a majority of the industry to do better.

"Slippery slope arguments are not fallacious in the games industry because whenever they see an incline, they cover it in soap" Excellent quote and also I honestly can't remember any example of this statement being inaccurate.
@Emilio1985
@Emilio1985 3 жыл бұрын
It's true though. "Slippery slope" accusations can't be a logical fallacy when it's being used regarding someone doing something they've done before. For example, a recovering alcoholic wanting to just have one drink can't respond to someone saying "one drink is a slippery slope to more drinks, and all the trouble that's caused you already" with "that's a logical fallacy." No, not when you've demonstrated that you regularly slide down that slope all the time. A slippery slope fallacy in this case would be something like... "Nintendo is manufacturing scarcity today, and pretty soon they'll make it so you can only play Nintendo games if you give up your Playstations and Xboxes." Even if Nintendo wanted to try that, they never have before, so that would be a slippery slope argument that is a fallacy.
@JoeNoshow27
@JoeNoshow27 3 жыл бұрын
People forget that fallacies don't exist in a vacuum. A pertinent example is someone arguing that it's fallacious to trust the scientific community, because it's an "appeal to authority." Yes, in a vacuum, authority doesn't *necessarily* = true. But we know the rigorous standards of the scientific community, just as we know the game industry's incessant willingness to push the bounds of capitalist avarice. (Not to mention, a fallacy doesn't make something wrong. An argument can be fallacious and still be correct in its conclusion.)

@@vulkandrache1928 There are things called logical fallacies, where you create an invalid argument based on faulty logic. One of those fallacies is called a 'slippery slope' fallacy, for example: "if we let gays marry, what's next? marrying your dog?". You usually don't want to use those fallacies to support your arguments, but when it comes to the gaming industry, such slippery slope arguments often turn out to be true because of their greed. The quote by OP is a play on words: 'you can use the slippery slope argument for the gaming industry because it's as if they themselves are using soap to make the slope so slippery'.

The reality is that I'm not even sure how this makes sense as a business move. Like it's not that much work to port these games it's clearly not a remake of remaster, and this is a year where everyone has a switch. But instead they're gonna create scarcity so scalpers can make a quick buck reselling copies which Nintendo doesn't even benefit from

People keep trying to justify that "oh but businesses need to make money", when its like, its been shown in the past that making a flat solid product on its own without piece-mealing it, without charging overly expensive prices for it, etc, has given them just enough money to keep going! Its still a profit, that WILL pay the company and their workers. The problem is the out of touch corporate suits who quite frankly are not even people at this rate. They soak up SO MUCH MONEY for their own pointlessly fat paychecks that they probably stimulate this false impression that they need to make all the money ever and not just SOME money to keep going.

False scarcity and the pressure to be first in line are some of the most depressing tactics I've seen from corporations to squeeze more and more money as soon as possible from their customers. Digital copies should not even be full priced games, much less limited. Imagine telling someone from 100 years ago that we can create an endless supply of something by copying it and then telling them that we just don't do that because it's not profitable.
@Neptas
@Neptas 3 жыл бұрын
The problem is that those tactics work. They work really well. I suspect a lot of companies will actually copy this strategy, they are all thinking "Hey, that's a good idea, let's copy that!" right now. We already saw those effect with those "pre-order" bonus editions.

Digital is the same price as physical because pressure from sellers that said, we wont sell your hardware if your digital games cost less. I know its shitty, but not sure that because of the platform holders. (on pc where physical just dont exist, on that platform, theres no reason thought.)

@@realdoomerhours I doubt about that. I can see many fans who were like "Yeah I will buy that later" but never actually buying it. For what it's worth, I don't believe it will be particularly hard to find a copy of that is worrying you, this thing is pretty much replacing the big holiday title after covid royaly fucked up Nintendo, they _need_ this to sell well, and I doubt they haven't noticed that anything they put out with a big IP attached the cover will sell truckloads, no matter how garbage (Pokemon) or mediocre (several mario ports and spin offs) they are.

Yeah, STEAM, with all its thousands of defects (and they are a lot) for years has argued that piracy is essentially a problem of value and service. And not by chance, it has become the behemoth it is today. In many third world countries, like here where I live, it was STEAM that popularized many games and considerably decreased piracy. I mean, most of my friends used to pirate PSX and PS2 games, but now most of them play on the PC and have original video games without mods/cracks. But I say without a shadow of a doubt that I won't have any weight on my conscience if I decide to download a copy of these Nintendo games. I mean, Nintendo isn't even trying to adapt them! The unofficial version of Super Mario 64 for Switch is a better adaptation than the official one, with support for filters, widescreen, and several other options!

@@Cooperal And that's the thing. I don't get why they stopped that in favor of an extra bonus to their internet subscriptions. I had been one of the rare individuals who had felt bad from pirating SNES titles back in middle school since they were otherwise inaccessible to me at the time, so when those titles hit VC, I bought them as a repayment with no direct intention to replay them. Because of that, I have only one game left pirated that I still cannot buy; Terranigma. I was really happy that they finally released "Trials" of Mana here... Granted, I don't really manage my money well either, but this artificial scarcity alongside minimal efforts to provide backwards compatibility for digital titles without additional expense frustrates me to no end. I wish the folks over in Sony would let me have PS4 versions of Vita games that I bought and even share trophy lists with one another. Their crappy proprietary memory cards keep on corrupting on me, and I had to fight them to get a first replacement under the warranty, but they indicated that I could not make use of said warranty a second time. The story, as I remember it, was two young children in the UK were playing with a shuriken (a real, metal one; no idea where they got it) and one injured the other. What’s also weird is that, during those times, Michelangelo using nunchucks was also considered more violent than Leonardo using swords, even though the latter weapon can stab and dismember people in bloody ways. As a result, the first cartoon TMNT series was forced to have Michelangelo start fighting with a grappling hook instead of his nunchucks. From what I looked up, the only reason for that is supposedly how pop-culture started to portray the chains of nunchucks being used to strangle people. As a result, nunchucks became more specifically viewed as a weapon for assassination/murder, versus a weapon for general combat/defense, even though Michelangelo does not use his nunchucks that way to my knowledge.

I find it less scummy (though it is scummy) and more confusing in this case. Like why would they even need to create scarcity for something that's going to sell like hotcakes no matter what they do? There's quite literally no requirement or tangible benefit to create FOMO because everyone has been so hungry for a Sunshine re-release alone, even if it didn't have 64 and Galaxy that this collection is going to be bought by every switch owner in this and every other multiverse. They could even pack each copy with deadly spiders and it would still sell like gangbusters. It doesn't create more urgency because the mere fact it exists creates urgency enough among people who would want it. Limiting the release only really hurts Nintendo, even if it's not much.

i'm especially confused by the Mario 35 thing. Like, nintendo online needs all the selling points it can get. Usually with an online game people want to start early anyway so they aren't outclassed later, fomo doesn't really work here. The people who would normally be excited enough about this to get switch online now feel like it's not worth it, it's hard to feel like you are "missing out" when you know the servers are about to be shut down in a few months anyway. If you only got to "claim" Mario 35 for now but could keep playing forever it would be a different story. I just don't see why they would completely get rid of something that they already went through the trouble to make. Like at least with the 3d all stars i could see them thinking that a short term sales boost is better than more sales in the long run. But why they wouldn't just keep the Mario 35 when it would probably lead to a better short term and long term boost, idk.

I think it has to do with the $60 price tag. For one title each from the N64, Gamecube and Wii, this collection should really cost about $30, $40 being an upper limit for most people. I've seen plenty bemoaning the $60 price point, and I'm definitely one of them. This move seems to have been made in order to get those people who would have held out for a price drop to instead put money on the games at full price.

I've been hoping for GameCube games to be released for years now and so I was pretty cheered to see Sunshine included in the collection. The fact that joy-cons can be used just like a Wiimote and nunchuck in Galaxy is also a good sign, showing that remasters/ports of Wii games are possible on Switch. I was all in, right up until they gave the details regarding the release. "Limited physical release" is already bullshit artificial scarcity that benefits no-one except scalpers (remember amiibo and NES/SNES mini shortages?), but a limited digital release as well? It's such a backwards and pointlessly customer-hostile move that defies explanation. When I first read that, I thought that I must have misunderstood something, that they couldn't possibly be expanding their terrible track record of artificial scarcity to a digital storefront, but they are. They're limiting the sale of digital copies, which cost nothing to produce and can be duplicated endlessly. Unbelievable. I was all in for 3D All-Stars for about 2 minutes, then the trailer ended and the release details began. Immediately all my enthusiasm dried up. I won't be supporting this at all. Hey Jim, Ninty has been doing this for DECADES. I used to work for Nintendo Australia in 98/99, during the original releases of Ocarina of Time and Pokemon Red/Blue. It was a great place to work, but we had the shittiest ordering restrictions on stock, and truly draconian selection criteria on who could stock our products (prospective stores would have a representative sent out to them eventually and would then subject to panel approval for stock, and even it might just be old stock that was approved, not new releases). Otherwise it would be one box of Zelda (6 copies) per store, and one box of PokeRed OR Blue per order cycle (monthly for most places). It was forced demand, and put a huge strain on staff fielding complaints from store owners, mostly independent small toy stores back then. The chains got a bit more, but not much. We had a warehouse filled with the damn things but we let them drip out to keep insane demand up. Of course this was instructions from higher up the chain, from the US and Japan after all Australia didn't make anything after all, we were just this weird little additional PAL territory. Stores grew so desperate for stock, that all of a sudden our shipments started to go 'missing' or become 'damaged in transit', but some stores seemed to then not need to order more copies. We had to change shipping companies because so many were not making it. Investigations did reveal that drivers were indeed illegally selling our stock to smaller stores desperate to compete with the bigger ones and then claiming the stock as lost or damaged for insurance. After I'd been there a while and had built a good relationship with some store owners (I was at the main office in Scoresby and dealt with stores from all over the country) I began to raise questions with my boss over the ordering restrictions. After having a bunch of Christmas orders redirected from independents to chain stores after assuring the smaller stores they would get their stock, I physically checked stock in the warehouse; there was an excess. I raised it with my boss, was told not to worry about it. I was let go two weeks later, less than a week from Christmas. The reason given was they had insufficient work for me. On my final day I had taken over 200 calls and keyed in over 100 orders. They've been doing this for DECADES.

I'm old enough to remember the Cabbagepatch dolls. Later, it was Tickle Me Elmo and Beanie Babies. It's always something that's the hot Xmas toy that's not available and causes people to get into literal fist fights.

Just like when they removed Donkey KongTropical Freeze and Pikmin 3 off the WiiU eShop simply to re-sell the same game for 3 times the price on a different platform. It teaches me there is nothing wrong with piracy when compared to Nintendo’s own scummy actions.

You can buy the Wii Mario all stars collection right now? They stopped printing the discs all products have a life expectancy or a life cycle, are all the comments made by people who don't understand microeconomics? I'm a undergraduate in economics and that stuff was boring to me.

@@haruhisuzumiya6650 I think people are angry that the digital version will also only be available until March. Most people probably won't buy the physical copy anyways. Companies don't do this unless they have to deal with licensed properties they don't own. So it is ridiculous that Nintendo is doing this.

Artificial scarcity, which leads to artificially high prices, is protected by the government mainly with patent and copyright laws. Corporations are allowed to keep prices artificially high because the government protects them from free competition. If anyone could freely reproduce things and compete with them, prices would drop like a rock and artificial scarcity would no longer be a problem - this is why drug prices are so high, is because it's illegal to reproduce & distribute medicine without the privilege granted from the government of patents and copyrights.
