you know what would be cool? if instead of capturing princesses bowser kidnapped rosalina, daisy, wario, waluigi, yoshi, toadstool, heck even donkey kong and diddy kong and you unlock each one of them when you beat a world.

For me, I'd like to see a 3D Mario game that feels… more like a traditional 3D Mario game. The older 3D Marios, minus Galaxy 2, had the slightly more expansive story, some had more checkpoints, and for the most part, better rewards (I guess the Galaxy games did). But for me, I want the older 3D Mario style back. Non-linear levels, missions that involve collecting things in a large expansive world, a nice hub world that has tons of secrets (like Delfino Plaza)… Galaxy 1 kind of started to deviate from this and made things incredibly linear, so since this formula has really only been TRULY done twice, I think it's about time they did this again. Because, like you said, the Mario games lately have been incredibly conservative. Incredibly linear levels can only go so far. Meanwhile, there's a lot of untapped potential with the old school 3D Mario formula. People can cry about how "MARIO WAS NEVA MEANT TO BE DAT WAY IT STARTED IN 2D LOLOLOLOL" Fine! Go play your New Super Mario Bros. and be happy with that. I'll play a Mario game that innovates and one where the developers REALLY allow the series to grow.

I'm glad to hear it's still a fun game. I agree that having to start over on a level can be frustrating. Which is why I prefer games with save files or being able to use save stage.

One does not play a Mario game for story... It's the journey that's the point. (aka gameplay and level-design) screw cinematics and plot, just have fun while actually playing.

I really think they missed out on a good opportunity here. You mentioned the lack of Yoshi in this game. What could've been done with the story is that Bowser could have captured Yoshi and trained him to be a sort of sidekick. Mario could team up with other Nintendo characters within the Mario universe (for example, Donkey Kong or Wario) and have them travel different paths to get to bowser's castle. Each path will be taken by two playable characters. For example, Mario and Luigi could take the green road. Add a sense of consequence as well. If one character gets knocked out, make them sit out a few minutes before being available again. There could be a store to buy power ups and health upgrades. If both characters get knocked out, they wouldn't be available for the final boss fight. The levels also adapt as well having regular checkpoints and always adding new and creative obstacles.

I'd love to have many more unlockable characters in the next game.

The checkpoint helps with finding the stars. Each stage stuck to the idea that there's 1 before the checkpoint, 1 near the checkpoint and the last 1 before or even at the end. That's why I didn't mind the 1 check point system

While there isn't an actual penalty for using the white tanooki suit for someone not going for 100%, you have to beat all levels without it to qualify for completion.

I think it should've been that instead of rescuing each... fairy?.. you defeat a boss (koopalings are awesome) but the fairy is nabbed by a giant mechanical bowser hand. Then, when you reach the final world, you fight a giant mecha bowser (it'd look kinda like bowsers but a bit robotic and with screws in it) with bowser on it. If this happened you'd have people thinking "Wonder what they're then used for?" rather than "Wonder what the NEXT colour is?"

I'm also at the point where I have the last level and the mystery house with 40 green stars. Wish they could've made an exception with that mystery house because my god I've replayed the first 15 green stars more than 15 times, If they could've given us a checkpoint at like the 21 green star or 16 & 31 green star I'd be happy because some of those you get to the green star right after it turned to 0 and you have that split second to actually grab it. Now the whole repeative part with the saving a fairy in each world, it actually kinda reminds the hardcore gamers of Super Mario Brothers 3 where you had to save the king of each world, but they were turned into random animals and enemies so getting back their wands from the Koopalings (Koopa Kids) and seeing them transformed back into themselves was a bit more rewarding than seeing the fairies being freed from the jar they're trapped. In SMB3 you can imagine the kingdom going into ruins with the King being transformed or controlled whereas with the fairies...it's more so Mario and co just being nice since other than the fairies in the stamp houses, we really don't see any other members of each world and can't imagine actual damage being done with the ruler trapped in a jar. I wouldn't be objected to having more unlockable characters, I just wish that people didn't spoil the only unlockable character that was clearly supposed to be hidden considering after the credits there's a tiny detail that would get the player either excited or like "what is that thing and what does it mean :O" Hell my best friend spoiled it to me because he was looking on a gaming website that had info on the game and neither of us knew that it was the only hidden character. No my friend isn't an asshole, but how was he supposed to know it was the only unlockable character and it wasn't his fault that people were posting stuff about before the game was released. :P For the checkpoints, I'm kinda so-so, sometimes it makes the level challenging and other times it just makes the level annoying. What I absolutely love is all the tiny references to past games in the Super Mario franchise that are throughout the game. Even ittie bittie tiny ones that only hardcore gamers would have, like the sounds for when the timer goes down and score is calculated after grabbing the flag, the death music and the sound for when the life counter goes down by one are all from SMB3. And then big references like Charging Chuck from SMW and Galoomba aka SMW Goomba are back, and then I bet those piranha plants that sprout from a wall of ground that you had to hit on is based on some enemy from Super Mario Sunshine since when they die the are squished into the wall/ground and make the same death sound from SMS. References like that are things I love to see because it makes me proud to be a hardcore Mario gamer, it allows me to get all the references. The characters (other than the hidden one because they weren't created until last decade) have the same abilities they did in Super Mario Bros 2/Super Mario Bros USA. I also loved the new powerups and features that they gave us because it gave such a variety to the game, and a lot of the levels were thought out well, however I wish that the levels could've been a bit more themed to their respective worlds. I mean there's a beach level in the world that looks like it's made of ice. :P This was a great review, I would've watched it sooner but I was waiting till I got the game and had beaten, now while I haven't beaten it I was glad that I got to the last level so there wouldn't be any spoilers. :D Any idea what the next game you're going to review is?

Good review Unusual Suspect. I played Super Mario 3D World myself in 2018. I much as I enjoyed it, I had several rage inducing moments near the end of the game. But I always knew Champion's Road was hard so I didn't rage on that level.

U know what Bowser should've done different is that he should've taken over the Mushroom Kingdom, and needs to be stopped. That's the best I could think.

I am immensely grateful for someone taking a critical eye upon this newest installment. I feel modern critics often overlook aesthetics and story of games these days. At the very least the Mario games, which is weird because they DO have a story no matter how lazy it is and should be criticized as well. I feel so spoiled to have grown up with the odd and quirky "spin-off" titles like Super Mario Land 2, Wario Land and Majora's Mask, which proves that Nintendo can do pretty amazing things with their storylines if they just stray away from their typical damsel plot-device. I am always as disappointed when the main canon of the series plays it as safe and bland is it does. The visual style could use a boost too. Just look at how gorgeous Wind Waker is! Why can't Mario take on something similar instead of looking like plastic toys? Back in Super Mario All-Stars each individual game had it's own unique look. I miss those old days. Made me think stuff like that mattered equally as much as gameplay, but the modern times and I seem to have grown apart. At the very least Nintendo and I. Oh well, at least I'm glad a KZfaq-user such as yourself still takes notice of things like these.

Super Mario Galaxy had a great story. The lack of story and ability to talk to Lumas/Sprixies/Captain Toad/anybody on the level made it feel more platformer-like. The secret character was very enjoyable and I found myself having fun playing every single previous level as her because her spin was so useful (I guess I won't say who it is either). If the Sprixie Princess's offered more after being saved, that would have been nice. Great Soundtrack. I love the game a lot. I found the Captain Toad levels much more fun than you did I guess, I thought they were creative... and, new. I only just got to the actual final world, so I haven't gone through that frustration. I'd have given it a higher score.

However, I don't mind when Nintendo tries different angles on classic game franchises because I find it makes them more interesting at times and can add some very unique aspects to it that'll be around for more games. So I actually would like to see these offered ideas put into play, if only to shake up the Mario formula

What they could have done is have you rescue the pixies and then have them give you a new power up for the final Bowser boss giving rescuing them a motive and evertime we rescue one we are told we have so many out of whatever and we as a player are intrigued and what us to keep us going to find out what happens when we get all the pixies

Story is unnecessary for sure. More and more challenging levels is all we want. I would end up just skipping these cut scenes.

Yeah it seems considering the latest Mario games except Mario Galaxy that they don´t wanna focus on any big kind of story. Just the simple go trought the levels and have fun, make up your own storie while you play kind of game. Still I think this looks fun (Don´t buy games anymore but still look up what happens) great they included Peach among the 4 players.

Super mario Galaxy had a good story

I'm playing through this game now (almost to World 7) and everything he is saying is spot on. I would only add a couple things. The music IMO is just meh... not inspiring at all. And finally the reuse of assets... this kinda goes back to how the game just has you do the same things over and over... but they even do this in a lazy way... each time you enter a castle, looks like the same animation, graphics etc... with a different color scheme. To me this looks like a game that could be made in a year to 2 years tops. It feels so lazy in many respects; even if it is true that it's the best looking and perhaps best Mario 3D title to date. Great review... had they put a great story in this game, it would have sold Wii U's by the truck loads IMO.

I think the New Super Mario Bros and Super Mario 3D Land games are actually a step backwards for the Mario franchise. They take it back to the original Super Mario Bros style gameplay of short, repetitive levels, timers and overall less complex and shorter games. I don't really like this move. Even when compared to games like Super Mario World, these games are a step backward. And admittedly I don't prefer traditional Mario platformers, I prefer the 3D Mario platformers such as 64 and Galaxy, which emphasize exploration and are non-linear, and Yoshi's Island, which is a far better 2D platformer than these or even World and Bros 3, in my opinion.

I’d say you suck at video games as this one gives me trouble only at the very last stage, it’s only a matter of knowing what to do on the stages. Though completing it 100% is really frustrating because you have to beat all stages with every character… Still, this is the best Super Mario game out there (not counting Odyssey as I haven’t played that yet). I wonder what would happen if the game makers crossed this game and Xenoblade Chronicles…

I never had any major problems with 3D depth perception, and the level progression system is fine as it is IMO. Mario games don't need an in-depth story, they tried that with Galaxy 1, and it sucked. Less is more in this case.

Normal Mario games are not really about plot. You want a Mario game with plot? Go play the Paper Mario series. (Well, the first 3. I dunno about the other ones.)

Maybe they made the cat powerup super obvious because they were sick and fucking tired of adding all this new content, then all the idiot gamers who don't even play mario games complaining that they're just releasing the same game over and over again without adding anything new.
