Shovel Knight was recently released, and while the design is meant to look more like an NES game, it's definitely an old school platformer much like Mega Man or Ducktales that could still be perfect for the SNES

Thank you, for making videos like this. I'm in my late 30s and only in the last year and a half have I got back into gaming after stopping in my early 20s. I found this after your recent part 2 video you made. I'm so behind the times I was like "What the Hell is Steam?" So I really appreciate a video like this one. There's a lot of awesome stuff out there now but it's a bit overwhelming and my tastes tend to run similar to these sorts of games as my favorite systems growing up where the Genesis/Super Nintendo/TurboGrafx era of gaming.

For twin-stick there is also beat hazard. the cave is a good atmospheric platforming puzzle game as well. and it has a fair amount of re-playability since certain paths can only be taken with certain team members so not all puzzles can be completed on the first few playthroughs. they both support coop as well. I also can't recommend the trine franchise highly enough for people who like just a simple game a la nes/snes it is also a puzzle platformer and reminds me of good old lost vikings, man i wish blizzard would make a new one of those.

If you do another one: Dead Cells Salt and Sanctuary Fez vvvvv Shovel Knight Ori and the Blind Forest Transistor Aquaria The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human Song of the Deep There's a bunch more but those are some of the better modern 2d games I've played. The follow up to Limbo, Inside is very, very good and worth a mini-review too. If you haven't played it, I think you will like it. I actually enjoyed it a bit more than Limbo TBH. If you don't mind a few reccomendations, not coached in "you forgot" because the person writing said recommendations forgot to check the date on this video and is claiming you forgot things that didn't exist yet: Shantae: Risky's Revenge - I played this game a month ago and I had SOOOOO much fun. Absolutely loved it. Flawless recreation of old platforming, complete with gorgeous 16-bit pixel art, and absolutely OOZING with charm and humour. You're a girl who is half-genie, in a sort of cartoony slightly-orientalist setting... not quite Aladdin-style, but in that realm. You attack enemies by whipping your hair at them, and can also buy magic spells from the item shop. As the game progresses, you gain the ability to transform into different creatures through the power of belly-dancing. The creatures have different abilities that let you access new and different areas, find new stuff in old areas, etc. Kind of a Metroidy thing in that sense. Level design is great and the platforming is smooth (aside from some annoying bits you have to do in monkey form), and the enemies are cool and the music is lively and, as said, it's REALLY funny, and also it has the best NAMES of any game ever: your nemesis is a pirate called Risky Boots. You have a zombie pal called Rotty Topps. You save a puppy called Wobble Bell. A guy mentions his pet monkey Chewbonky Kong. Etc. I'd compare it to stuff like Mickey's Mystical Adventure, Monster World IV, Super Adventure Island 2, Magical Pop'n, that kind of thing. There's two other recent Shantae games - Pirate's Curse and Half-Genie Hero - and those are both really awesome too, but they don't feel as SNES as this one does. Momodora: Reverie Under Moonlight - This is another sidescrolling pixely platformer, though this is a bit more action oriented, and has an almost RPGish / fantasy-adventure kind of vibe. It's not as much pure fun as Shantae, but presents a really compelling and rich world, has a lot of atmosphere, and is waaaayyyyy better than the awful "cover art" suggests. You're a sort of priestess lady, who looks like a final fantasy white mage, and you fight enemies by hitting them with a red maple leaf (Oh Canada, our home and native land...). Child of Light - Despite being developed in Montreal, in terms of genre sensibilities, I would very much characterize this as a classic JRPG. It's the usual thing - turn-based battles, elemental weaknesses, semi-random encounters (you can see enemies in the non-battle screen, though), customize the skills and abilities of otherwise pre-fab characters, that kind of thing. The big interesting departures are two things: first, that it's a 2D sidescroller, rather than an overhead view - though at points you'll be able to move 'north' or 'south' between planes, and fast-travel to different areas. Secondly, that all the dialogue is told in rhyme. It is absolutely BEAUTIFUL in terms of graphics and art design - a bit reminiscent of Braid's backgrounds, actually, has a charming and somewhat melancholy sort of fairytale vibe to the story, and the music is FANTASTIC. I loved this game, and keep wanting to replay it, but then my backlog is like "DON'T YOU DARE". I Am Setsuna - A full-on proper Japanese JRPG. This one was created by Square-Enix's Tokyo RPG Factory, who were very deliberately created to do games in the style of the companies "golden age" of the late 90s, early 00s. And that's exactly what it is. I Am Setsuna is just... very much a latter-SNES style JRPG, and is particularly reminiscent of Chrono Trigger. It's got a few clever small twists to gameplay and strategy, but that stuff is mostly exactly what we were all used to and kinda miss. The main complaint people make about the game is actually one of the things it did interestngly, and which I really like. Rather than traversing the usual set of areas - the desert country, the forest country, the ninja country, etc - the entire game takes place in the depths of a northern winter. It sets a really distinctive visual tone, IMO, which is perfect for the melancholy nature of the storyline (your quest's big goal and what sets you out on your way is the human sacrifice of one of your key party members). The music is also breathtaking, and PERFECTLY suited to the mood and atmosphere. It's nice to play it around Christmastime, what with all the snow and coats and snowmen and warm fires and such. Shovel Knight has been mentioned a billion times below, so there's nothing in particular I need to add about it. Sine Mora is a sidescrolling shoot-em-up that I've been really really enjoying. Shmups are all very samey, aside from the three viewpoints (sidescroller, vertical, 3D), and the two types (standard and twin stick), so they need to be set apart in some way to be cool. Sine Mora does this with a very cool sort of WW2 aesthetic to your spaceships, an extremely dark story about war, occupation and genocide (best presented in the original Hungarian language - cos if anyone knows about the horrors of war, occupation, fascism and genocide, it's the goddamn Hungarians), and the neat mechanic where you ship can TECHNICALLY take an infinite amount of damage - what matters is your TIME LIMIT. If you run out of time, you die. And each time you take a hit, you incur a penalty to your timer, and each time you destroy an enemy, it gives a bonus to your timer. You also have special weapons, power-ups, etc, but most interestingly, you can have some kind of time manipulation ability for your ship too. The most common and useful is a "bullet time" mechanic to help you get through particularly intense bullet hell storms, but there's also mechanics for things like reversing time when you make a mistake. Pretty much ANY modern Shmup is pretty SNES-ish, because the genre hasn't really changed over the last 30 years. Like 2D fighting games, it just gets more and more refined and perfected in subtle ways- like trying to bake a really good loaf of bread, or make the perfect slice of pepperoni pizza. Jamestown is another fun one, and that one is more self-consciously retro. It's vertical scrolling, done with pixel art, and its big hook is that its set on Mars in the early 17th century, in an alternate history where THAT'S the New World that England, Spain, France and Portugal tried to colonize, rather than the Americas. Someone below mentioned Hyper Light Drifter, and that's a great game, but I honestly don't think it's very SNES-like. Like IMO it takes more than using pixel art to have that same feel. And some things that use more modern graphics CAN totally feel like a SNES game.

There will be a followup to this one soon-ish. Thanks for the recs. I will have to stick with popular stuff to a certain extent though, I know stuff like Undertale and Stardew Valley is basic bitch to many people but it's gotta be included, because I've found many retro-minded people legit don't know about those games. But Sine Mora and Child of Light both sound really interesting. The Shantae games and Hyper Light Drifter will def be included as well. Maybe I'm in the minority but I Am Setsuna was way too blatantly derivative, I was bored to tears by that one. Shovel Knight has more of an NES vibe than SNES to me. Hollow Knight, River City Ransom: Underground, Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap and Owlboy will also have to be included.
