Can't believe i speared this fish! Solo spearfishing and camping on a tropical island. Local fisherman tries to steal my shoes, i give him a fish without knowing what he was doing first.

I am in the Army and was stationed in Hawaii I was battling a brutal divorce and self medicating with Alcohol every night to get by. One day my friends came over, helped me clean up my pig-sty of depression and made me go spear fishing with them. I immediately fell in love with it. I stopped drinking and bought all my own gear. Ever weekend I was itching to get in the water. It was so therapeutic being under the water and not hearing all the noise of our working world, both literally and physically. I never harvested more than I wanted for lunch or dinner and always went for a healthy species of fish. I moved again but kept that mindset of getting out in nature and connecting with it. I have never been religious, but there really is something spiritually connecting about submitting yourself to nature.

ahh yes flounder. it has become my favorite fish. I've had most fresh and saltwater fish and my favorite so far has been flounder and sea trout. white buttery fish absolutely delicious. the ones we catch here are summer flounder i believe. tan and green spots. they are actually hard to filet but you get 4 filets per fish. where they are sideways you go down the middle of their top and bottom and cut in underneath the filet. i catch live shrimp and small mullet as bait but have also caught them on white artificial shrimp too. they actually grab their meal and sit and eat it slowly back on the bottom for about 60 seconds, then you set the hook. they call them door mats around here.

Flounder is extremely tasty tho they are very difficult to catch especially due to their camouflage. Another cool fact about flounders is that unlike most fish they have both their eyes on one side of their body so they can lay flat in the sand and ambush prey.
