In this video, you will learn the technique for a super reliable forehand loop technique vs a backspin ball.
This shot can be easy to mess up. Many players put the ball into the net. Others over hit and miss the table completely.
But with the technique shown in this video, you can make your forehand topspin shots every time.
The tips in the video come from Emma Harradine. Emma is a Level 3 coach. She has won English national titles in the over 40s and over 50s women's category. You can find out more about Emma and her coaching services on her website. www.emmattcoach.co.uk/
This video was made in partnership with Table Tennis England www.tabletennisengland.co.uk/
In the video, Emma is using this equipment:
Blade: JOOLA Fever
Rubber (both forehand and backhand): JOOLA Dynaryz ACC bribartt.co.uk/product/joola-...

At 2:04 and 4:43 Emma claims the ball needs to be hit at the top of the bounce but that’s actually not what she is doing when executing the stroke. Look at 5:03 for instance. She clearly lets the ball drop a bit (like pretty much most players do when looping) and then hits it. There is not a huge difference but it’s clearly not the top of the bounce. Still great video though. Learned a lot! Thanks 👍

not only for beginners but also for intermediate and advanced players. I tend to play very hard from the first ball. I benefit from this if I try to spin without generating huge amount of speed. Becase hard topspin easy to be blocked, and causes alot trouble if opponent can block.

Great video - lots of great tips there and I liked the importance given to consistency over power - something I often tell juniors. One thing to bear in mind is that after you've looped, you're in a top spin rally unless the opponent chops - if they block your topspin, it will still come back with some topspin so you can start driving and flat hitting like Emma did. Thanks Emma, Thanks Tom.

This is some great clean straightforward technical instruction. I wanted to point out one key thing she does that tennis players try to do as well, and it's difficult yet amazingly simple. Watch any of her loops in slow motion. Where are her eyes and head 'at contact'? On the ball. This stabilizes the body and makes the force going itno the ball more solid, and it dramatically helps your timing. Focusing on apex of the ball, and seeing the contact at impact are GOLD.
@TodayIsABrandNewDay
@TodayIsABrandNewDay Жыл бұрын
Absolutely true and I tend to forget mostly in match situation. I concentrate on 'where' should go the ball so I do not see the ball at contact which leads to error, like I do not see/control the bat angle, the angle of the swing and sometimes even missing the ball.
@cldavis33
@cldavis33 Жыл бұрын
@@TodayIsABrandNewDay And you are absolutely right as well. The match starts and all these tips and things we are trying to work on seem to vanish. But that's how it works. You have to practice and put in the time for the muscle memory. You have to focus intently during a hitting session on that one or two things you want to improve on, like watching ball at contact and contact at the apex. That's takes concentration and it is not easy. But that's the best way to improve.

Thanks, Tom. The forehand loop technique is very important in table tennis because it is a powerful and aggressive shot that can put pressure on your opponent and win points. The forehand loop involves hitting the ball with a looping motion using your dominant hand, creating a lot of topspin and speed on the ball. The forehand loop can be used to attack different types of balls, such as backspin, topspin, or no-spin, and can be played from different distances, such as close to the table or far from the table.
@DragonWarrior976
@DragonWarrior976 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Tom. It was a very good presentation. The key take away is that the loop has to be consistent and be considered as a setup shot. Once we apply this mindset I believe automatically many issues of being out of position and over rotation of the body can be solved for many players including myself. I also liked how the fifth ball was discussed. I liked the thought process on that part very much. Please can you start creating some playlists when you do a session with an individual player? That will help folks who want to view all lessons from a particular player. Thank you once again.

Yes it's very deliberate. Emma wants to engage in a topspin rally, so she spins the first ball, which will be returned with a block or counter-attack and then she is ready to attack again herself. It's a great skill to develop.

@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
Having a 'safe' forehand topspin, doesn't mean it lacks quality. Emma's topspin is very consistent, but it does have plenty of spin and she places the ball well. Plus she is very good in topspin rallies, so she really doesn't mind if her first topspin is returned (even attacked), as she is setting up the type of rally she prefers and has a good chance of winning.

Possibly. But it has obviously worked for Emma who has reached the top of the rankings for her age group. And if you are clever with your placement (avoid hitting zones), then it won't be easy for your opponent to counter with a strong attack. And if you happen to like fast topspin rallies, maybe it doesn't matter if your opponent counter-attacks, as you have the sort of rally you want.

@@TomLodziak question is, what shall we do if Topspin rallies are not what we are looking for? I‘ve just re-entered the game after 15 years. Still have that consistent FH-Loop on Backspin. Youngsters are impressed, but nowadays more of my loops end in a counter attack, when placement is ideal I stand a chance at my third one. But if not I feel like predators game. Yup I need to practise FH Topspin on Topspin but I also need another option.

The FH loop is a great opening shot, but if its not hit with enough spin or it lands short you are opening yourself to a strong return. Quality of spin is everything and that takes time to get consistentl. Thoughts?

little tip for Tom: after her follow up, tap it with a tiny bit of side spin, this way completely ignoring the varied amount of top spin and at the same time controlling the placement and potentially stopping her from a further attack. have fun :-)

I am almost doing the same (of course on a much lower level) and hardly hit the Net against downspin BUT sometimes my topspin goes rather high and is comparedly slow ... Weak players try to block and usually don't get the Ball back onto the table, stronger players often use the chance to attack back super fast. I was told this is pretty much the "old" way of playing topspin which changed in the last couple of years especially with the Chinese doing the super hard topspins that look more like a smash than an actuall topspin.
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
I think you have to develop a forehand topspin which works for your game and playing level. There are different ways of doing it, but no definite right or wrong way. The benefit of Emma's topspin is that it is very consistent. She has a reliable shot she can use to initiate an attack. She gets plenty of spin and actually her topspin doesn't go that high over the net, so it's not that easy to return with a powerful counter-attack. It obviously works very well for Emma, as she is at the top of the rankings for her age group. But of course if the topspin is too slow or high or lacking in spin, then it can easily be attacked by better players. The alternative is to develop a more powerful forehand topspin, with a more horizontal swing. This will be harder to return, but also a lot harder to execute consistently. Which is best? It depends what level you are playing at (or what level you aspire to play at). Emma's forehand topspin will work for most players at the amateur level. If you want to be a pro player, then you'll probably need something more aggressive.

"clean and efficient" at 0:54 . Realistically, perfection isn't a condition in which there's nothing else can be added on, but a condition in which there's nothing else to be taken away. In this case, the technique is "clean and efficient" no unnecessary movement, all movement are for the sake for one purpose and one purpose only. Only continuous training and repetition can lead to such high level coordination and precision

I never find these working. I’m only intermediate or low intermediate player but what works for me is not these positions or how you spin. Although, I do follow it and that might contribute to my hits. But the difference between success or fail forehand for me is where the ball is when you make contact with it. I always made contact with it too early. Now I made a conscious thinking during play to make sure I only contact the ball when it reached the right side of my body (or right in front of your face when you’re twisting your body like in the vid) and it’s very difficult to mess up against people my level.

I must disagree with you on this idea of not giving too much importance to your first topspin. This is only valid with weak players who choose not to attack your slow topspin but if you get a player who likes to counter attack and his mind is setup to counter attack, then giving him a slow topspin equals losing the point because he has time to attact your ball.
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak Жыл бұрын
I don't think we're saying you should do a weak and slow forehand topspin. You still want to get good quality spin on the shot. Emma generates plenty of spin and the ball stays low-ish over the net. It's just that it doesn't have to be a winner. If you get good quality spin and place the ball well, then it is not so easy for your opponent to counter-attack. And if you like fast topspin rallies, it doesn't matter if your opponent can return your first topspin, as you have setup the type of rally that you have a good chance of winning.
