We built a secret bunker under our kitchen with access to it through the kitchen island. The island top needed some improvement because it started to sag in the middle. This is a fairly simple DIY project that anyone could do.

Once you get it flat, seal the bottom too. Chances are the warp is because moisture penetrated through the unfinished side and caused it to expand which now shows a dip in the top. You will also need to support it from the bottom too.

It's because you only treated one side of the worktop with varnish and the other side was left natural that will cause it to bow on one side often. Best to always treat both sides top and bottom then it will reduce likelihood of this happening.. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

You are 100% correct. And the angle iron without a treat of the underside will likely rip teh screws out. Not enough to prevent it from happening again.

Sealing or varnishing both sides of the Island butcher block top would keep it more stable and not be affected by the moisture.

The iron bars will certainly help but it would also be beneficial to seal the underside of the wood too. When one side of "raw" wood is left unsealed, it will absorb and react to humidity more so than the sealed top and cause odd wood movement effects. Just like other folks have already said 🙂

if a GFI is required by your local codes then just make the first receptacle in the island a GFI and all the other connected to the load side are GF protected also.
@sdlangdon7468

My personal opinion, you should have sealed the bottom of the counter top. It probably absorbs the moisture, and cool temps from the cellar with the wood on the bottom expanding when the wood on top not expanding because the top side is sealed. The steel angle iron is a great idea, but sealing all six sides will do wonders to prevent warping.
@selador11
@selador11 9 ай бұрын
As has been stated by several others, the major reason your countertop warped is because you sealed the top and sides, but not the bottom. Moisture came from below, and soaked into the raw wood. Causing the bottom of the slab to expand, while the top did not expand. Your angle iron pieces will help. But your best bet is to get it good and flat the way you did, and then seal the bottom. Giving it several coats, to be sure...

When finishing wood products a good rule of thumb is what you do to one side of the wood surface you should do to the other. Wood is susceptible to moisture in the air and varnishing closes off the pores and stabilizes it. Where your cellar is more damp than the rest of the room puts more moisture into the wood surface on one side causing warping. I would recommend starting over with a new surface and using wood finish on both sides. You can also put in a metal ‘C’ channel in the wood surface on the cellar side of the top. I am curious to see if the angle iron will be strong enough to hold the surface straight. Cam at black tail studios has several videos on stabilization of wood surfaces. This comment is coming from a place of love and respect for you and your family.

Even with the angle iron, you still need to seal the back side of the island from moisture. Also you will want to paint the angle iron to prevent rust.

Another reason for the bowing could be that the counter is only sealed on one side, with higher humidity the unfinished side absorbs moisture faster than the sealed side.

Are those boxes rated for use on a metal surface? Might want to ensure you ground that metal surface one way or another.... Also, you need to coat the back side of your countertop to avoid inconsistent moisture absorption.

Great job on the bunker. One reason your top warped was due to only sealing one side of the counter top. As the bottom dried out, it pulled the grain closer causing the warp. I recommend you seal both sides. Your hinges need to be hidden as well as your latch for securing the top. Recommend using a magnetic lock to release the lop. There are many hinges that can be hidden. If the power is cut off upstairs, what sources of light do you have down in the bunker and what about going to the bathroom? You're very skilled and build to or above code so good on you. Thanks for the video.

I think it's pretty cool, but doubling as your kitchen island it comes at the cost of prime kitchen cabinet/draw storage. 16:50 you should staple up some bubble foil insulation on the ceiling down there so you are not eating insulation down there. I have it in my basement low ceiling its soft and durable if you bump your head and reflects a ton of light where you need it. Plus it keeps the insulation where it belongs.

It bowed because you didn't finish/seal the underside of the table top and it absorbed more moisture than the top so the wood on the bottom expanded expanded causing the bow. . You need to seal the undersurface of the wood to equalize the wood absorption of moisture.

you need to finish the back side of your countertop. With it being raw, moisture can get in from that side and cause the wood to expand. With the top side finished, moisture cannot get in from that side, causing the wood to expand on the back and not on the top.

That way If terrorist or cray people happens to break into your home, you will have a place to hide In and get out of the bunker to outside of the house. Make sure you have a lock on the inside of the bunker. Make sure that the door into the bunker Is hidden or disguised with plants, or a water hose holder or something else so It can't be clearly seen from outside. Make sure all who live In that home know that they can run Into the bunker for emergency purposes. I love It. I wish I had one. Blessings to all of you.
