Scene starts at 6:40 i remember the story of a common friend. They stay at their store house coz they wanna make sure their groceries & belongings are okay. but they didn't expect water levels would go up suddenly in just a span of time. The next thing they know they need to go up at the 2nd level of the house but 2nd floor is not enough they need to go up at the roof of their house w/ no protection . They hug each other until some others and her husband got hit by a lumber, wood etc..her husband did not survive. 😭

Haiyan (Yolanda) is a wake-up call for a lot of people who dismiss severe weather warnings. This isn't to blame the victims, but to remind everyone that a storm of this scale is going to hit again, and when that storm hits, we should be much more prepared. I don't believe that there was enough preparation done to, at least, reduce the number of deaths. I don't believe there was enough safety and evacuation campaigns days before the storm. I don't think the people cared much about safety or storing food either before the storm hit. One could see the development of Haiyan on November 5, 6, and 7. It was growing stronger. But I didn't see that much anxiety in people. Like what Josh Morgerman said in his interview with Yahoo! Philippines, people took the typhoon nonchalantly. They didn't heed warnings. The day before the monstrous typhoon made landfall, there were a lot of social media posts about it already. A huge chunk of those posts was useless--all about hollow thoughts and prayers. I understood that people had to pray, but I wish people also exerted a little more energy actually preparing for the worst and telling friends and relatives living in the path of destruction to prepare for it. I don't know anyone in Tacloban, but I have a few friends and a brother in Cebu City. I remember telling them to store food and water and charge whatever devices they had. Good thing, Cebu City wasn't badly hit. But I feel really sore about what happened in hard hit areas. It's a shame the Philippines lies in the typhoon belt and gets more than twenty typhoons/cyclones a year, but we seem to have learned nothing from previous onslaughts (Milenyo, Ondoy, Pablo, etc). Matuto na tayo.

We are from Bohol. That is just 1 island away from Samar and Leyte but we had terrible experience of this Typhoon. Terrifying! Time goes by, now 2020. In just days, it's exactly 7 years ago.

INSANE footage, dear Josh! I'm glad you could intercept and safely document such an unforgettable storm. Those winds at your location look like solid Cat-4, but that's just my (unreliable) visual estimate. Awesome job as always, you guys rock!

Awesome and speechless!! I had been through a couple of direct hits when I was a kid in Hong Kong in 1979 (Hope) and 1983 (Ellen). These typhoons were not nearly as strong as Haiyan but I will never forget how the sound of the wind suddenly increased to frightening levels near the eyewall. I distinctly remember how each gust of wind would rush by us followed by a lull. I could begin to hear the next gust of wind getting louder and louder up to 15 seconds before the strongest part of the wind rushed by, together with the banging sound of the windows, sounds of debris and broken glass rolling pass, and the loud flapping sounds of sheet metal from the outside!

The howling sound is freaky...that sounded like a monster breathing roaring like a beast. OMG that was scary! I hope those people trying to cross the flood made it alive. What a devastation in less that 8 hrs. This was an awesome capture, glad you live to tell & show this.

Around 6:55-7:05 am footage, that's what I could only see with my glasses. I had to hold on so it wouldn't be blown away. It was crazy. My family and I ran to the roof because the water was up the the ceiling and climbing the 2nd storey area too. =( Lucky we got out of it alive, albeit covered in cuts & bruises. It was the longest 6 hours of our lives. We finally walked to the hotel once the water subsided.

I think this was the strongest storm since observations began. Just look at the symmetrical eye and extremely high cloudtops. Unbelievable. This storm was severely underrated.

Please tell me why a parent(s) would choose to stay in their shanty like home with their young children during such a fierce storm?? My God some of these families were fortunate to have even survived the journey across that flooded street, not to mention the wind. Wow!

Scary! A lesson to be learned to work against climate change. Comments about preparedness is not needed, no preparation is enough for this kind of devastation especially with the location of the affected areas. Let us work hand in hand to reduce this kind of disaster, start in your own little ways.

I was 7 years old when this happened I was living in Cebu in townhouses while winds howling outside and saw someones bike had been moved, and really heavy rain

Nice footage. Those roof panels and other debree flying over 100 mph through the air could chop you up. Scary.
