Maybe depending on the circumstances there is a dominant soul, it could explain why someone like Merida’s mom behaved more like a bear than a human? And Mei has found a way to control the transformation between the souls? Because the ritual to get rid of the bear curse in Brave also took place inside a circle! (*idk maybe there’s something there? Lol)

Honestly somehow didn't make the connection between Soul and Turning Red. All I've been thinking is how this would affect Mei's "Inside Out" emotions. Would her emotions also switch between their regular forms and a 'Red Panda' form whenever either of them have to use the panel?

So they removed one of their souls, and placed it inside an inanimate object. Would that technically make the object they placed it in... a Horcrux? If someone with only one soul tried to perform this ritual, it obviously wouldn't work. But what if they murdered someone, and _then_ performed the ritual? Would it work then?

See I would go more to say that the ladies in Mei's family don't have two souls, but are born with one soul split into two. With the second half awakening when the ladies come of age. Because by the end of Turning Red Mei realizes she doesn't want to get rid of the panda spirit because it IS apart of her. And clearly the aunts and everyone else aren't getting RID of their pandas, but just containing them, since they were able to get those forms back again to save Mei's mother.

Yes. I'm thinking, it seems you're only allowed to break the containment in the jewelry, of the Panda spirits/selves/forces (may the Force be with you), when there's an absolute need like with Mei's mum. HOW do they figure out to go back to their human form so easily if the Panda has been locked away for 40 odd years.... Why would you need a trinket to keep the Panda locked in, if you can switch at will... Or is it because when you're triggered, the Panda will go nuts, and you need the jewel THEN, to prevent the irreparable. The rest of the day, I'm fine... Fluffy tails💐🙂just my 2 cents

A slight twist on this theory: twin souls in the body, rather than gifting it at a later date? It could be that Sun Yee, asked for the gift to turn into the red panda, and the Jerry’s gifted her that second soul, but over time, as it was gifted to all female descendants, they were born with Twin souls (this would account for the count being off centuries before, but not any more). And the ceremony to remove the red panda spirit could be the severing of the tie between the two spirits, as a surgery to separate conjoined twins.

In regards to the Jerry's helping vs. Not helping, we already know that our population grew over time, so Astral interference probably just died down over time as a sheer numbers game. "Well we can't break the rules to help here bc there's so many people who are in need of help" is what i imagine the mindset is so it was probably much more common when there was literally less people who needed help 🥰🥰🥰

Is it possible that the two spirits fused together? Or is it a sort of conjoined twin thing, but the spiritual version? The fact that the initial separation that Mei was going through was spiritually painful, and likely the same for her mother and elders. That could be likened to the surgery to separate twins… Twin souls inhabiting a single body, and some embrace the twin and others repudiate it.

When joe got put into the cat it was not planned, therefore it did not work. If the Jerry’s helped, it would be planed, and they would be able to make accommodations.

If toys can have souls, I think that buzz has two souls. One for English and one for Spanish mode. When buzz goes into Spanish mode, he is a completely different person. Having two souls could explain this phenomenon.

Or it could be a personality based on the Spanish localisation of the Buzz Lightyear TV show within the Toy Story universe. Like how his default personality matched his character to a tee.

Also, fun fact: the Spanish and Latin American versions of the film still have him speaking Spanish, but with a much thicker Andalucian accent (even more so in Spain). This would be the cultural equivalent of giving him a Texas cowboy accent in English.

I assumed the red panda was a spirit that lived inside her body and gave her the red panda transformation and not a second soul. ETA: Alebrije‘s are spirits living in the spirit world that aren’t souls. They also have the ability to inhabit a living creature. Dante the Xolo dog is a good example in my opinion!

Spirits and souls are often considered synonymous, and Pixar really hasn't listed any difference between them at this point. I think its safe to assume they're the same thing in the Pixar Universe.

I don't notice a difference in personality just a boost to the emotional states of the characters. I can't deny there is a similarity in the rituals, but if the panda is a soul, then shouldn't Mei Lin encounter them in the Astral plane, or even her own pandas soul separated from her own soul, but stiil tethered? I think the point of Turning Red is that life is about accepting all of your heritage, not just the good parts, and embracing them. What you guys are describing here is more of a Moon Knight situation with 2 personalities possessing a single vessel.

This was a really great video, bringing in multiple films and having it all make sense. The only other Pixar characters that transform are Merida's mom and Jack-Jack. Unless Jack-Jack is sharing his soul with banished Monsters for reasons I can't fathom, I think he probably keeps his own soul the whole time.

The Red Panda is more of a totemic animal (in the shamanic sense) than an extra soul... It is a common concept throughout many cultures (eg see the bear in Brave), individuals or entire clans are granted protection by a spirit and can sometimes morph into it/ritually assume its powers, usually through dance etc. It's closer to the idea of a "guardian angel" than it is to a second soul.

It's a cute theory, I like the idea, but I have to ask, if Mei-Mei is basically letting the panda soul take possession of her body and removing her own soul (assuming I understood that right) then how do you explain the end of the movie where she's able to use only part of the transformation.

If I understand the theory right, it's only the panda that displaces the human soul. When she's in human form, the panda spirit is still present, and can affect part or all of her body (they mentioned her red hair). To use a Disney-adjacent example, it's like Steven/Marc in Moon Knight, where Marc can sometimes move a hand or arm even when Steven is in control.

Perhaps, in most cases, one soul dominates at a time. In Mei's case, and probably Sun Yee and some other ancestors too, the two souls are in harmony.

If Mei lin's sould leaves her body when she turns into the panda (entering the zone), how is it shes able to maintain connections with the world around her? She carries conversations and is paying avid attention to the people and places around her, which is something people in the zone wouldnt do, as they would be to focused or lost in whatever activity theyre engaged in

But when Mei's soul goes into the zone, and the panda soul takes over, the panda is still Mei though. cos it's just Mei talking and all in panda form with full memories of Mei. If it really were another soul then, when it is just the panda soul in Mei, it would not have the exact same memories, behaviour, and mannerisms as Mei though

Ok, but like, if it's a different soul, then why is she exactly the same person with the same memories while in Panda form? The souls in Soul seem to have their memories and personality tied to their souls? She's not a different person in panda form, so there's something still missing from this theory. I like where this is going though

Notice that the ancestor Sun Yee is worshipped by the family and hence never forgotten so her soul lives on for 100s of years.

She's not in the zone whenever the panda comes out though, the zone is a blissful zen state and the panda comes out when she's angry too. More likely one soul split into two instead of two souls. She's still herself when she's the panda, just... Whole.

As much as I love the Pixar Theory, our stubborn need to find loop holes and reasons for it to work is probably compromising and damaging Pixar's true message to the world and its viewers when it comes to these films regarding the afterlife and souls, which I wholeheartedly believe is that all our religions and beliefs are real, and we can all coexist peacefully without judging the traditions and beliefs of others. For example like Coco, Soul, and Turning Red, but we insist on trying to make them all work with each other to make the Pixar Theory work, when we know the after life in Soul and Coco are undeniably different.

HOLD UP! I have a question that i just thought of while watching this... If someone in Mei's family dies while having the red panda soul separated from her body (in the jewelry), since its contained and separate from her actual body, does that second soul pass on with the original soul when she dies, or is it still "alive" since its been kept "alive"/contained in an inanimate object?? Like all the aunts and Mei's mother and grandmother keep the jewelry where their panda is contained on them at all times, sooo does that mean the panda soul is aware of their wearer's presence and need to be kept close by, or maybe they do it for safe keeping 🤔🤔🤔🤔

I'd like to add to the lost souls, you mentioned becoming absorbed or obsessed with a hobby or diving into a passion so deep you no longer love it, but I'd like to add people that are suffering from burnout as it has a similar outside appearance as the other examples and many people that suffer from burnout end up kind of lost and in need of completing a task or tasks that they just can't complete or at least feel like they can't complete it. Moonwind helping them out of the Astral Plane helps them out of the burnout long enough to get the task complete and handle the burnout from there

I love the fact they chose the decision to make 22s soul to go into Joe bc imagine if 22s first time in earth they were a Cat. Can't eat pizza, can't talk, can't help, can't do anything. Also 22 is the best mentor because they had every mentor. So having the knowledge but didn't have the spark of life because they've never seen or experienced life before.

I think Merida’s mom has two souls. When Merida asked Boo for a spell, she exchanged a piece of jewelry for the cake and then her mom turned into a bear when she ate it. The longer she was the bear, the more she acted like one while still retaining bits of herself. I think Mordu is the same way. The only difference is that when he didn’t turn back before the deadline, the bear soul took over completely while his other soul was trapped inside while unable to control his actions and was only freed after he died.

There’s another important factor. Joe asks Jerry 1 why they look a certain way to which she says it’s to comprehend an appearance their minds will see. So to explain why Joe, Mei, and Miguel see different versions of the afterlife is because that’s how they visualize it. We don’t know what the afterlife exactly looks like; just the way our minds see it.

no bc even when she is a panda they have the same personality in the movie souls all souls have a different personality so if she did have 2 when the panda comes out the panda would have to be whole other spirit and also if she did we would've heard about it in the movie and they would've talked about like it was a mistake

Emperor’s New Groove theory. The squirrels used to be people. If you watch the ending of one emperor’s new school episode, a squirrel is seen escaping a trap like Houdini. This can prove that these squirrels have human intelligence, and is also the reason they are unafraid of people. And since Kuzco knows that Yuma has a secret lab, as a younger emperor, he probably made Yama turn some peasants into squirrels.

Or maybe her previous henchmen before Kronk showed up, Kuzco does reference her henchmen as "models", meaning she has them replaced after they’ve completed their obligations to be her accomplices, and uses the potions to transform them after they’ve completed their usefulness for her, which also could indicate she’s been involved with alchemy for longer than Kuzco knows. The spider that Kuzco encountered In the jungle scene could’ve previously been her (meaning Yzma) henchmen long before Kronk. It does very faintly say "too late" after the fly says "help me" in a somewhat squeaky voice, which could be both previous henchmen defeating themselves. The reason this might be the case is that her underground lab could’ve been built for the purpose of transforming the many henchmen before Kronk, which also ties into Kuzco’s parents death, in that their death was because they found out that Yzma had built her secret lab without their approval, since they were the Emperor / Empress before Kuzco took their place. She was trying desperately to keep her secret lab under wraps without any of the palace people (even Kuzco’s parents) from finding it out, which helped start her path of hiring henchmen to prevent people from exposing her underground lab.

Since I was on babysitting duty tonight we watched this movie again. Now I can't keep asking myself this question so I'm gonna ask it here. Has anyone ever thought about what happened to all the ancestors' red panda totems, like what happens to those spirits/accessories after their host dies? What happens to grandma's 4-Town medallion after she passes??
