@@ronconnelly why would that make a difference in this particular test scenario? If you put a say 2 gallons in your f250, roughly 10% of "charge" and drove it for the same distance, how many times do you think turning it off for a few minutes after it stalled it would have started again?

@@uliwehner on manuals, if you put it in first and turn the engine starter on, the car moves under electric power. Not really useful for anything exept maybe an uphill driveway?

@@mcrsit just like when you can pop the clutch while rolling if there's enough juice to get spark, but not run the starter. When the engine runs, the alternator folds the battery back up. Seems to work better for carburetor cars, but fuel injection ones seem to need a lot more stable electric to start.

I think the main mistake was not organising a cheering crowd at the last few uphills. Ask any runner, it's that what gives them the energy to push through when their energy is exhausted... (Especially the very end, I practically heard the roaring crowd when he made it (kindof)).

I remember doing a 60km trip around my city outskirts and got towed by on random guy back into the city when the batt died, you'd think we put the bike to charge as we got home, nah, we saw regenerative braking charged it up a bit so we went 3kms roaming in the city again. Barely made it home. Good times.

I know that sweaty palm seat-shuffle. First EV was a high-mileage hugely degraded '11 LEAF. That last hill coming home on a cold night was a real nail-biter.

i took a test drive of a fiat 500e and they had to cut the around the block drive short because the range estimation went from 30 to 1 after accelerating pulling out of the dealership. i think those California fleet mileage circumvention electric cars are pretty bad.

Yes. Even if was measured entirely linear (which it's probably not); the first 10% from 100% to 90% are capacity you can freely use; the last 10% from 10% to 0% are percent that the system might not allow you to use. If the battery had just stopped charging when you unplug it and drive, the battery is already at the perfect temperature; this is particularly important in cold climates where the range decreases a lot if you have to start with a cold battery; so the estimated range will be a lot further even with the same charge because very little energy is needed to keep the battery warm enough. Also my 1st gen BMW i3 seems to continue charging a bit after it displays 100%; I can tell because the estimated range keeps increasing for a while even though the bar is full. I think it counts 90% of maximum charge as 100% (and probably 15% as 0%) to prevent us from wasting time and power reaching a charge level that it might never reach and might be harmful for the battery anyway.

@@SteinGauslaaStrindhaug I'd say that it is due to cell balancing. Once you are "100%", some cells might be a bit above 4.2v or a bit below. It is important that each cell provides the same voltage so that they are not stressed differently when in use. It makes the pack less prone to sagging, which is why when you accelerate you can see a huge voltage drop, and makes the battery cells healthier for longer.

Not really battery voltage decreases as they discharge so since you need a certain amount of power to meet what the speed controller is asking for then current increases, and as current increases batteries discharge faster

@@ShainAndrews not a great example though as most insurance companies would find me at least 50% at fault for that as I left it in a public place, unsecured, with the keys in it. In order for you to be totally at fault, I'd have to have locked it up and taken the keys with me. This would render it secured and obviously not for public use. Again, if the outlet is easily accessible in a public place like a parking lot, and has no security cover with locking mechanism, then they cannot charge you for theft of services. Especially since they don't have posted rates detailing the pricing on said services either. Imagine this: a water hose at a gas station. The spigot is not locked, there is no sign specifying payment for use. You fill up a water jug and go to leave, the clerk runs out and demands payment. When you refuse, they call the cops. The cops cannot do anything because the hose was readily accessible by the public, not secured, and had no signage posted requiring payment for use. Legally, you deprived the station of no goods or services. Literally the only action that could be taken is a writ of no trespass.

My buddy's Tesla uses only regen braking until you press the brake to a certain point, or at least that's what he told me. So you just have to modulate how much braking you're doing and you'll only use regen.

@@samuelalexander8030 Typically, just taking your foot off the accelerator in a Tesla engages the regen braking, and then you use brake pedal if you actually need to fully stop (or panic stop). The Tesla brake assembly, master cylinder is the same as the one in the Honda CR-V, so I doubt it's doing anything fancy with part pedal application, unless it's literally just using the brake light switch to tell the motor controller to go into regen.

Alternatively build in a "fun" and "range" mode. "Fun" means no throttle is full-on coasting, "range" means no throttle is regen, and he could set how much regen he feels comfortable with. I remember some hybrid a few years ago coming out with a hand-dial to turn up or down regen.

Between the two trips I think it went through about 105% SOC, and I went about 160 miles. So given that 7% = 0%, we'll call it a 140 mile range.

Or about the same as a 78 Dodge D150 with a 440 and a 35gal tank. Seems about right

Would Neutral have been helpful on the short downhills, to build momentum rather than regen? You might have coasted further than you limped!

@@richardortiz178 Going faster means more friction so more losses of energy to the outside of the system. With recuperation you transfer kinetic energy into electrique. Depens on the losses of that transfer of course but id say aerodynamics aren't in your favor. So recuperation should be better overall.

@@smoothbraindetainer Ofc they have a bms, all the lithium based battery technologies have to have a bms to be safe to be around. But just because the battery voltage is slightly above the hard limit set by the bms doesn't mean it a healthy state of charge for the battery. An analogy would be maxing out parameters of something so that it's technically still in spec, but works way harder than it should and therefore decreases its lifespan significantly.

@@alianlammers9025 These aren't generic aliexpress BMS systems, they're properly engineered to not do that. "Spec" is based on a worst case scenario for these, so it's well within what we would consider typical healthy operation.

I had range anxiety when I drove a Peugeot 306 turbo diesel and didn't have enough remaining overdraft to cover both food and enough fuel to commute at speed in the week before payday.

In fairness, the biggest reason for this is that the battery is THE most expensive part of the drive system. When you're trying something new, it's hard to go "Sure, I'll spend $24,000 for a used Model S battery pack and get that 250 miles of range". Matt went BIG here. I converted a 1955 GMC truck, and the EV equipment ran me roughly $10k. If I wanted a 200 mile range, I'd LITERALLY be adding another $18k to that figure, easy. That's tough to do when you don't even know how it'll drive, whether you'll want to be in it for 10 minutes let alone 3 hours!

Apparently Li-Ion has around 400Wh/L of power density. My Bosch Powerpack 400 has 400Wh and is about the size of a Water Bottle, so that fits. 20L Jerry can -> Theroretical 8kWh of energy storage. Even if you cut that in half for good measure that's nothing to sneeze at.

For sure. I was so worried about range anxiety that my first foray into electrics was a Chevy Volt, which only has about 50 mile range, but then a fully capable gas engine behind it that kicks on when the batteries get low. It turned out in the 2 years I had it, we only had the motor kick on about 3 times. 50 miles was longer than you'd think it was, even when there's no risk of being stranded. Now the EV I built, which may have the same 40-50 mile range, but I've never had below 80% charge because I'm worried about how long it'll last.

the problem with that is, you would always be carrying around something you never actually want to use .....I realize that living out west USA(when I did) that it is pretty common to spend ~3hrs of each day behind the wheel driving; but where I live(now) I'd be visiting a whole nother state if I drove that far - and say if you lived in Europe you might end up in another country or something ... and it seems anywhere you go now in modern times, at least has power already there for light bulbs or something; but an old rusty leaking fuel can, maybe not so much
