Fun fact: when teenage Clark is racing the train, a little girl next to her sleeping grandma is watching him. Well, the sleeping grandma is Noel Niell, the woman who played the original Lois Lane in the 1950s black & white Superman television series. She is never named in the movie, but her role is credited as Ella Lane. Which means the little girl watching Clark run is a young Lois, and this was the first time she ever saw Superman.

You have to remember my friend, this was the first ever film like this. It had tell the story to people with no interest or idea about Superman, back then, The effects were never done like this before. You would not have super hero movies today, without this film. I don't know about this being people's first introduction to Superman. "The Adventures of Superman" TV show had been in continuous syndication since the fifties, not to mention the Filmation Superman cartoons and Super Friends every Saturday morning. Most people in the seventies had a pretty good idea who Superman was, even if they didn't read the comic books.

Christopher Reeve was paralyzed by the horse accident, but he lived from it. He became quadriplegic, and became an advocator for stem cell research. He died in 2004 due to heart complications. He for sure is the one to beat for becoming the most iconic actor to ever play Superman. So far, Henry Cavill is very close, but Reeve just can't be surpassed.

Christopher Reeve is my Superman, and I grew up in the 90s. His kind curtious and happy outlook fully embodies superman. I do like other portrayals of the hero, Brandon Rough and Henry Cavill were also great as the iconic hero. And I agree, it was a different time period. They most likely wanted to stay true to the golden age comics, where everyone in the comics were illustrated with formal and or modest clothing. Or of course they wanted this film to be family friendly.

In reference to his date with Lois, she asked how fast he could fly, he said he wasn’t sure. So in his anger from her death, he flew as fast as he could, which happened to be faster than light. Once he went faster than light, he was able to travel back in time (you see the earth rotating backwards to indicate that he’s traveling back in time, not that the actual planet was moving backwards). Great reaction as always!!
@StCerberusEngel

And that would be the case if he didn't stop and reverse course to return it to its original rotation. A quick cut at the right moment would fix that, but that's what the film depicts.

I'm a few years your junior, born in '81, so I was unable to see this film in theaters, but it's one of many that my mom recorded from television on VHS and I gotta tell you, I wore that tape out watching it over and over. I fully believed that Superman was real. God, what an amazing portrayal of the character. My 11 year old son and I watch all the new Marvel movies together, but I showed him this one last year and wasn't sure whether it's age would make it too dated for a kid his age to appreciate. I'm happy to say that aside from him commenting on how silly he thought the time-travel mechanic was at the end, he was absolutely amazed by the movie, asking why the new Superman movies aren't as good. I was so happy that without any influence of nostalgia, he was absolutely ecstatic over the movie. What a classic!!!

Remember- those won’t tropes before this movie. This movie created many of those tropes. Also the film starts with a child opening a comic book. This is a not so subtle nod to the fact that you’re going to be watching a comic book come to life. The film succeeds because it’s not embarrassed by this but embraces it. That’s the main problem with today’s superhero films. They’re embarrassed of the tropes and inherent silliness of the genre.

Actually, Reeves did not die from the horse accident but it left him paralyzed from the neck down and he spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. A sad irony for the man of steel, for sure. This superman movie was the first ever *serious* comic book superhero movie (There were the Adam West TV Batman movies before that but, like the TV series, the general style was far from serious) and after 1978, it was was almost alone in it's style until Tim Burton's Batman in 1989 ('Marvel tried to push a few movies of theirown but they were so cheap and badly mad that they are not worth mentioning; they did however have success with the iconic Incredible Hulk series in the 80s) 21:08 - Yeeeeah, the movie (And its sequels) took a lot of liberties with what Superman's powers could do; as well as discarded nearly all laws of physics multiple times (But the "Turning back time, by making the Earth spin backward, by flying around it real fast is where they jumped the shark big time!)

One of the biggest suspension of disbelief moments (mind you, we are talking about a superhero movie so the whole film is a giant suspension of disbelief moment...lol) is the idea that a) the U.S. military is going to launch a rocket(s) with a live nuclear weapon b) the rocket shown on that trailer that Lex's cronies retargeted was way too small to carry a weapon of any size or go any distance, c) the largest nuclear weapon ever constructed was a 50-58 megaton bomb the U.S.S.R. exploded in 1961 that was dropped from a plane and weighed 60,000 pounds. Even if a 500 megaton bomb could be constructed, I'm not sure there would be a missile large enough to deliver it and d) I'm pretty sure earthquakes wouldn't be the biggest problem after the detonation...it would be the fireball, shockwave and radiation fallout. But again, this is a superhero movie so let's just forget about all that and just enjoy the show!

Phyllis Coates starred with George Reeves in the 1951 Superman film, and Neill took over the TV role of Lois Lane from her in 1953. Not to pick, but hopefully it's a fun fact, that only her first season as Lois Lane (the show's second season) was in B&W. Seasons 3 through 6 (and the planned season 7), which were her second through fifth as Lois, were shot in color.

I spent part of my allowance on a poster of Christopher Reeve in his Superman costume because thought he was so handsome. They told us "You'll believe a man can fly" and at that time the effects were so great that we almost did believe it. We were used to Superman on tv that very obviously was not flying. The running, however, made us laugh even back then. The way Christopher Reeve used just a pair of glasses, change in posture and a change in the tone of his voice to make it believable that no one recognized Superman in his Clark Kent persona was amazing.

That football was launched out of a cannon. Great practical special effect! And him running by the train, he was held by cables and a vehicle just drove him along side the road.

As long as it's the Richard Donner Cut of Super Man 2. Also he may have given up on that idea. I don't see him reacting to Superman 2 anywhere.

Wow what a surprise I never expected to do a reaction to it Bravo . Superman is my whole time favorite superhero of all time and this movie is the first modern superhero movie. You watch a real Superman movie not the modern abomination by Zack Snyder. Zack Snyder Superman is not Superman with all do respect to Henry Cavil who got screwed by a director who has no Idea what Superman is and what he represent. Christoper Reeve Rip is the gold standard of playing Superman no one else ever come close. Superman greatest power is his character not his actual powers. There are allot of superheroes who can fly and have super strength but they are not Superman. If you do Superman 2 please do the theatrical release not the Donner Cut which is incomplete and ruins the first movie. Fyi there was cleavage in the movie by Miss Teschmacher played by Valerie Perrine who is the first woman to show her nipples on TV. I agree with you that todays generation can not keep their attention for more than one minute but yet if you come from an older generation and and you saw movies as you grew up than this movie is not slow at all. If anything modern movies relay to much on Cgi crap and big explosions instead of having characters and a decent plot.

I remember seeing this in 1978. I remember the theater I was in. I remember how big it was. It was almost as big as Star Wars was the year before. It was something very special and Christopher Reeve made it even more special. I really did believe a man could fly.

Growing up watching Superman tv show in black and white, watching this movie was amazing. I agree with others that Christopher Reeves was the best. This was a movie you could take your kids to and feel comfortable.

Oh I love this movie. I was eight years old when my Mom took me to see it and it blew my young mind. Christopher Reeve will always be my fave Supes. Here's some trivia: (at around 28 mins) To achieve the shot of young Clark Kent kicking a football into orbit, an air cannon was placed underground and the football fired from it. Initially, Gene Hackman refused to cut off his mustache to play Lex Luthor. In early one-sheets of the movie, his face is featured with a mustache. Before Richard Donner and Hackman met face-to-face, Donner proposed to Hackman that if he would cut his mustache, Donner would cut his too, and Hackman agreed. It turned out later that Donner did not have a mustache at all. He wore a false moustache that he peeled off at the last moment. (LOL Psyche!)

I was 3 when this movie came out, so I grew up watching it. It has everything! And the icing on the top is John Williams’ musical score. And Gene Hackman? And Marlon Brando too? Yes, yes, Yes! I’m a fan of this movie and always will be!

Marlon Brando is one of the biggest male movie actors of all time. Many iconic roles from movies like "The Streetcar Named Desire" and "The Godfather" "Streetcare Named Desire" which was early in his career , made him a sex symbol with women early in his career. I think the vast majority of people today know him as Vito Corleone from "The Godfather", an absolute classic and one of my favorite movies of all time. It's probably one of many people's top movies of all time too.

In 1987 when asked 'philosophically what does Superman represent to people?' Christopher Reeve said: "A friend. And that's what people really need most. They don't need a strong one man vigilante force, they need a friend. We're basically living in an age where people are afraid of contact from each other. They're afraid of the cities they don't know their neighbors. They are afraid of the streets because something might happen to them. Basically technology is against you. Life is overwhelming. Even then bank doesn't know who you are. And we run around scared a lot particularly those who live in cities. And America was founded on virtues of a helping hand. And that is at the heart of Superman. The genuine love of people and that you always know he's your friend."
