Magg Pi Because it would be a once in a while indulgence? Regardless of the source, there is no actual harm being done when comparing those 5 animals samples to the billions being killed each year.

I feel like my meat appetite is gone forever after seeing farm videos. I don't see a lab grown meat as being particularly appetizing either. I don't blame any vegans who want to try this but I personally don't want to eat muscles, cartilage, and bone marrow, especially with all of the health analysis statistics... There are "free range" products already advertised and I feel like people don't even care to be ethical if it costs more than factory farm meat. Also, non-vegans will just call this "unnatural", synthetic, and criticize. I wonder if this will be affordable for those who are interested... Anything that reduces animal suffering is great though, of course.

I have no desire to eat it either. I don't like many mock meats, very rarely I'll try a good bean burger. But I don't believe all meat eaters are THAT bad. They are selfish and lack self control, but deep down they know what they're doing is wrong. If this meat tastes the same I believe a decent amount of people will eat it. From what I've heard this stuff tastes A LOT more like the real thing than vegan mock meats.

The whole point of this is not for vegans but for the die-hard meat-eaters. Doesn't matter whether you want to eat it or not -- the purpose is to close down slaughterhouses. You should also support Impossible Foods 100% plant-based "bleeding" burger that just debuted in New York. That might taste too real too -- again, this is to close down the slaughterhouses.

Hey Supertumor, you don't have a product anywhere near being market ready which is not how you have presented yourself so far. You have a carnist agenda whereby you are promoting the increased consumption of meat. There is your idea of incubators growing these meat products in these perfect incubator environments that could easily rapidly grow other pathogens - what could go wrong there? No doubt you will go away and rebrand yourselves another time when this incarnation of your company sputters to a halt but your trail is getting easier to follow now. You've approached a group of people that saw through the lies of the meat and dairy industry and can spot your false representations quite easily.

Dave Bleicher I can see how all the Supermeat razzle dazzle has got people confused. They are offering some kind of miracle solution to the world's problems with nothing to back it up with other than promises. What don't I have a clue about? That they don't actually have a product? They don't! That they have a carnist agenda? They do! It would be a conflict of interests for them to promote veganism. Their product is meat therefore they will be encouraging people to eat meat. Maybe the possibility of pathogens growing in the proposed home incubator? It is as much speculation as their whole proposal and far more plausible than the current fantasy they have. And as for rebranding- this is the fourth incarnation of them that I found. There are incarnations of them like "the modern agriculture foundation" and a biotech where they were trying to grow human body parts in the lab for transplants. They have done the rounds for funding for years. If they had something that was concrete to offer investors they would not be asking schmucks like you and me for money for their R&D which Supermeat are presenting as a product that is ready to roll out to the market place when ever they talk about it. If they were authentic in the way they presented themselves it would be an easier ask for people to believe them.

I really hate this absolutist vegan-at-all-costs mentality. Cultured meat reduces animal suffering so that's a good thing. I don't know about this company in particular but i support cultured meat in general because it means less animals have to be farmed to keep up with public demand. Realistically people are always going to eat meat so it's better to get it like this.

***** it' the OVER CONSUMPTION of animal products (as well as processed carbs and sugar) , because they are high in calories fat and cholesterol, that makes people fat and end up with health problems. Small amounts of meat and fish is good for you, providing a lot of protein, iron, calcium, omega 3 &6, b12 and other vitamins and nutrients which are less available from plant sources alone. The healthiest people in the world still eat meat, they just dont over consume it. It's the 'Western' diet that is unhealthy, not animal products themselves.

Not really. As you already can see, many are against this for stupid reasons. If the day comes, they lose a lot of guilt based arguments for veganism. If you're a vegan for ethical reasons you should absolutely be supporting this. If you're a vegan for health reasons you should absolutely support this. Think about it. 95 to 99% less land use, water use, animal killing, hormones, drugs and pesticides used in the world in one swoop. Thus making vegan foods better, healthier and freeing up all that land for veggies, hemp etc. Cleaner air, cleaner soil, cleaner water... Support it

My experience is that most vegans are unwilling to be that skeptical about the environmental and animal impact of plant based agriculture, synthetics, rescue animals, and all sorts of other vegan activities. I feel like people already prefer buying organic or "free range" meat over regular meat, even if it's a little bit more pricey because they think the animal is treated better (even if it's not the case) or that it's healthier, so i think if they can have the alternative to NOT cause any suffering while still eating meat they would probably do it, that would be great

As a vegan, I would only eat it if it was completely vegan (no animal exploitation after the first biopsy), and if I did eat it, it would be very rarely as a treat. Even so, with all of that said, I would not be devastated if SuperMeat failed, because eventually, we will have a vegan world. It would give us quick results, but it wouldn't solve things like health. It might be worth waiting for the full vegan world, because if SuperMeat became a thing, and was cheaper, people might only eat it because of that, and people's way of thinking wouldn't change. Finally, I see what you mean about it being like giving up.

I don't understand why so many vegans are commenting that "I wont try this product." Of course you won't, it's not vegan, it's not for us. It is something we need to support as it could potentially save billions of lives - so long as the company lives up to what they are promising.

Fellow vegans. This is what we NEED. if it works, its the answer. Unfortunately most people aren't willing to give up meat/ the taste of meat/ the idea we need meat. But this gives them no excuse. Its our best card. Its a way to save the environment and the animals. our own health is less important, we can leave it for later. We gotta focus on what we fucked up first.

@Bubbl3Bubbl3gum

I disagree with you on this one. It is an animal product, and it is also true that there are these "echoes" you talk of. But these echoes are in cosmetics and drugs which include ingredients that have been tested on animals in the past, but since we now know how they work there is no "need" (not that there ever has been a need to test on animals) to keep testing them. These ingredients are now being used by vegan make-up companies. While these ingredients are not animal products they are still "echoes". For me veganism is about reducing pain and suffering and if in the future no animal will ever have to die again for human purposes, then why should we care whether or not it is biological speaking an animal product? People who don't give a damn about their health are free to consume all the unhealthy stuff they want. Hell, a whole lot of people drink alcohol, not knowing that it is more addictive than heroin. So, health reasons are really a personal thing. So, to conclude this tiny essay, I would say that this particular lab meat is vegan, in the sense, that it does not cause pain, suffering and death of animals. From a more abstract view, it is not vegan. But we should care more about the animals as individuals, rather than the idea of veganism as an ethical construct.

I personally don't think it's viable; scaling up will be a huge problem without the product being priced out of the general market/regulation of the product creating all kinds of commercial contract issues. Also, not sure about the genetic viability of the original animal 0, 0beta, and 0gamma donations. Thanks for posting.

Great rundown of a controversial issue. I see the benefits too for the animals and sustainability but would never in a million years eat meat again. For health benefits but also it never felt right for me. I first knew I didn't want to eat animals around the age of 12, even when I didn't know what labels of vegan/vegetarian meant and convinced my parents. It doesn't feel natural and never has to me. But if people feel they 'need' it, the most sustainable and less cruel methods would be a wonderful shift. Don't mind me, I'll just be working towards my off-grid cottage and living off my own plant-based produce til the day I die 🌱🌴🍃🍀❤

The introduction of a phrase "lab vegan" is counterproductive and divisive. Vegans who would be inclined to support SuperMeat are those who are vegans for ethical reasons, and not for health reasons. That's all there is to it. 3-5 birds did not give consent to have a few of their feathers plucked? Sure. Consent is not a term that is applicable to rivers, forests or birds. It is a category error to use it when talking about animals. I doubt that plucking a few feathers is painful enough to undermine the enterprise of saving billions of animal lives a year for tens or hundreds of years to come... Personally, I would likely try cruelty-free SuperMeat, as it even though it is an animal product, it would be made without hurting living beings - and that is what's most important.

Excellent video Mic. You make some thoughtful and insightful comments. I agree we need to be cautious in supporting a business that involves animal usage at some stage of production. We need to ask: Where do they source the chickens from? What happens to the chickens afterwards? Will they be slaughtered later on? Is the biopsy invasive? Is there even the smallest amount of serum used? Even if tiny amounts of serum are used, animals will be breed for it and animals will suffer and die. I may be have misheard, but in the clip you showed where the head scientist spoke about supermeat he did say that they used a small amount of serum. This isn't about purity. Animal lives matter. Each animal is an individual with an experiential welfare. If the serum of severely disabled humans was used for the "greater good" then people would not label those for standing up the the rights of those humans as "purists." It all boils down to speciesism. Just because someone is a vegan doesn't mean they are not a closet speciesist.

Since then I have seen things that can't be unseen and thought thoughts that can't be unthought, so my reasons for not eating animals now extends far past simply what is the healthiest for me. But at base, health is still a powerful motivator. So regardless if it results from the tortured and vivisected remains of dead animals or creepy test tube "tissue", I will never eat meat again because animal flesh can never be health promoting.

"can never be health promoting." Except it can, but who cares about truth. If it is not 100% healthy, it's poison, which would mean that eating anything is bad ...

Hi there ! First let me tell you that I absolutely love your videos, they're all very informative ^^ However I just wanted to know if the numbers you give for example for the percentage of factory farmed chickens concern the US only or is it worldwide data ? Thank you and keep up the good work !

Hey there, It's the US and I actually conflated 99.9% of meat chickens and 97% of egg laying hens: www.huffingtonpost.com/nil-zacharias/its-time-to-end-factory-f_b_1018840.html It's all an estimate anyway.

I think promoting plant based is the overall biggest hope for the animals. People first then animals. People don't care about animals. People barely care about each other.

I was just thinking on this today, actually . . . I would love for this to become a real thing, because there are definitely meat eaters who care about animals, but not enough to give up bacon (I was there once, so I can't really say anything nasty about that line of thought). My biggest concerns would be labeling, and whether they would start adding "extras" like flavoring and preservatives as the norm.

great talk. very well balanced. i'm a long time vegan and huge supporter of supermeat. it's about the animal suffering first. personal health second. i won't consume it myself but it does provide a middle ground solution.

I'm behind This. I understand people who do not want to be vegan for me. I promote veganism as a health and environmental issue. And any attempt to calm the rapid damage of earth. And this is a good step forward. Cause face it. The world will never be completely plant based in diet. Humans of this evolutionary era were never strictly plant based. We developed organs to help with the digestion of meats. The body can thrive either way. Super meat kudos to presenting a solution.

For someone who has reduced meat consumption considerably (not actually vegan) for health reasons this supermeat doesn't offer any particular benefits for me. But obviously it will be amazing for the environment and animal suffering. One more step towards Star Trek The Next Generation.

Great stuff. What do they use to grow the meat ie nutrients and what is the source and efficency? eg 1 lb of lab meat requires x lbs of ??
@MictheVegan
@MictheVegan 8 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen the specifics yet but I imagine it's an oxygenated medium with various nutrients and the occasional synthetic hormones to flip those mesenchymal cells to muscle, adipose cells, etc. We are definitely not looking at a free energy machine so probably a bit more efficient than living chickens since you don't need to grow a whole bird. We will see.

+Mic. the Vegan I'm very interested in this as even organic vegetables use blood meal, bone meal and animal manures, not to mention the inefficiency in growing muscle tissue. But it should be more efficient than raising an animal I would think.

not all organics use those products, and where they do, some of those products like manure are waste products from feedlots that are environmentally problematic if not used.

I would never advocate for humans eating animal products under any circumstances, however one thing I would add to the list of pros is that stuff would make great PET FOOD! This would be a great product for people with dogs, and cats to feed to their pets! In fact I would love to see that company go into a partnership with Purina, Maybe Purina could even be an investor.

I think that if they deliver on it we should support it. Why? If our aim is simply to help the animals this is probably the only way to get mass changes in a smaller amount of time, it avoids things like soy and legume allergies, and it eliminates the need to kill animals to have meat. Another benefit is that it may lead to milk and egg replacement products that are a closer in taste than our current products. I will not be eating it, but if this works I view it as a win. Sometimes compromising is necessary to achieve the goal.

Another brilliant video! I myself would rather not eat SuperMeat because I've felt a lot healthier and way more body-positive since I've become vegan and really don't want to give up the love I currently have for my body & health, but if it's going to satisfy everyone who simply doesn't want to stop eating meat, I'll support it - even if I'll still be an advocate for a fully vegan (thus solely plant-based) diet and lifestyle.

Yes we should be hypercritical of supermeat right now, but assuming they 1. Are funded well 2. Are affordable for most people 3. Really do not use animal products, it'll help not specifically vegans, but meat-eaters remove or at least reduce animal suffering! For example: my grandma understands why I'm vegan, but she can't/won't give up meat because she likes it too much. If she prepared a supermeat chicken meal, it'd save the lives of multiple chickens, since she would be cooking for a family of four. Also, those rare few people who say they can't go vegan because they have a rare condition where they need to eat meat- problem solved! They can eat meat and not contribute to animal death. No I don't think it's healthy nor strictly vegan, but it's a good idea to start, and it'll help promote less animal death. I'm really excited and hopeful for this project.

Thanks for your input. This could help transitioners. I personally doubt that I would eat it myself, though, since I would most likely be fully vegan by 2021. Plus, I've already given up most meat, so it would be counter productive to go back. Awesome sidenote: my care taker makes my vegetables taste like fish using seasoning. I am equally as happy with your standard steamed veggies, but it would be cool to see more meatless options for those struggling. Perhaps when trying to create that meatless entre, you saute and season your new meatless entrees in a way that's reminiscent to the flavors you might crave. I feel like places like Detroit Vegan Soul and other vegan restaurants are doing something similar and I hope I was making sense. Everyone's road to veganism is different and some may not miss certain flavors/ tastes/textures etc whatsoever. I think it's good to have options and that hopefully this product can live up to the hype.

It may be unlikely that the type of person who refuses to give up meat will be the kind of person who would eat lab grown meat. These people will often desire the texture of steak, the blood even hunting themselves, it's probably not someone who eats hotdogs when they can be so easily replicated and made vegan. Can we not just support beyond meat and companies alike. I'm all for science and development but eating animals is wrong, science can't find a loop hole in that.

This lab-meat will close down the slaughterhouses a whole lot faster than the plant-based "meats," only because they're just not "realistic" enough -- although the Impossible Foods 100% plant-based "bleeding heme" burger that just came out may be a real game-changer. At any rate, lab meat is going to proceed regardless.

I would like to know where you found out specific information about the types of cells used, because I don't think it was mentioned in the video made on their official channel. Look into 3D organ printing. They already are successfully doing that with gut parts or aorta. They're currently trying to successfully produce functional muscle tissue that way. However creating a nervous system to govern it is a bit more tricky. Though I've already seen people successfully creating external circuits that bypass the spine and connect, for example, a 3D-printed plastic hand directly to the brain, so the person actually can move their hand for the first time in years! If this keeps up the future can be quite bright :).
