Superstar Limo - possibly one of the biggest failed attractions in Disney history. Personally, I didn't think it was that bad! Monsters Inc now occupies the building this ride used to be in. Filmed and edited by Robb Alvey - www.themeparkreview.com

This was originally supposed to be a much better, much faster ride with the paparazzi chasing you. Then the Princess Diana accident forced them to neuter the ride and this is what we ended up with.
@PiperSparkles

Actually, It is in fact why. The park was in development during the time of Princess Di's Death, and the original ride concept of a Paparazzi chase did in fact have to be overhauled due to this event. Theme Parks and other similar projects do tend to be in development for several years before their final construction and opening, during which many world events can occur that may have an impact on concepts such as this. They don't just spit these ideas out over night.

First time seeing this, and I'm sitting here stunned that this was an actual ride in a Disney park (however briefly). It's so ill-conceived on every level. From the unfunny jokes, to the lame celebrity references that were already dated when it premiered (a ride should NEVER contain the words "funnyman Tim Allen"), to the creepy puppets and generally unsettling feel of the whole ride. On a conceptual level, the tone is all wrong--it's a snarky and cynical take on the superficiality of Hollywood magic in the middle of a place (Disneyland) that was built on Hollywood magic.

The ride might have worked if it were set during the Golden Age of Hollywood and featured Clark Gable, Marylyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, etc etc. That way the stars never would have become dated. Disney was probably too cheap at the time to pay the royalties to the late stars estates and settled for C listers.

They got rid of the line as you enter Bel-Air "welcome to bel-air, where the streets are paved with royalties, and hype." The ride was clearly mocking hollywood, which conflicted with the hollywood backlot's attempt to capitalize on the golden age of hollywood and all of that which this ride mocked. I don't think this served the overarching story of the park, and rather undermined it, but it if one understands that its supposed to be a ride-thru parody/family guy-type story, it works. Eliminating that line as you enter Bel-Air is peculiar; maybe they thought people weren't getting the parody/comedy angle, but by just removing some of the jokes, you're making it a literal celebrified hollywood experience rather than a parody. At that point, all that is left is a really poor way of delivering on that expectation. It looks and feels nothing like the glamorous hollywood people might expect. The park map from 2002 says it all! I just checked to see how they were describing the attraction on it. "A glitzy ride through LA's star-studded streets." BIG Mistake. The failure of this attraction isn't only in its execution, it is in the way it was being mis-marketed. The set-up mentions "glitzy" and "star studded," and the attraction is certainly not glitzy. People can't tell by reading a park map that it is a sarcastic experience. They are expecting one experience to be delivered and that experience actually is failing miserably. Rather than letting park guests in on the joke, DCA was playing a practical joke ON ITS GUESTS. This could have survived if the park map indicated that it was supposed to be a comedy, parody, sarcastic, riddled ride through hollywood. Attractions like Roger Rabbit are similar in tone but don't carry the same level of confusion. This ride was so universally hated and misunderstood and I don't think anybody misses it. But I wonder if it would have succeeded in a toontown-type hollywoodland subland, paired with something like roger rabbit, in a land that spoke immediately and visually to the fact that this was to be playful and unrealistic. It also doesn't speak to the defining golden-age-of-hollywood and movie magic dramatic themes, aspirations, aesthetics, and emotions that people understand. A more elaborate, literal dark ride would be needed to anchor and define such a land. A ride that would render the cartoon limo attraction a lesser thesis, an offshoot, an alternative interpretation, an antithesis that compliments the overall show and acts as a device of acknowledging the non-existence of such a perfect vision of hollywood through the ways in which it mocks it and reveals opposing truths.

Interesting theory, but I just can't see how it could possibly have been a success. It's just a terrible ride on every level and no normal person would have found it funny, even if they had tried a bit harder or marketed it as satire. I just don't get what they were going for, even originally. I cannot fathom how it got the green light, even if I was an imagineer who worked on it I'd be ashamed and have begged them to let me start from scratch with a completely new idea.

I only rode this once the year DCA opened and man I thought it sucked. As a 7-year-old I thought it was garbage and still today at 23-years-old it's garbage. The terrifying puppets, the awful "storyline", yep this was a product of the Eisner years....the Monsters Inc. ride that's there now is much better though I'm not sure how long it'll be there considering it looks like Marvel is taking over that side of the park. We'll see how long the Frozen stage show lasts there too since it's smack dab in the middle and if a Marvel "land" is made it won't fit the decor or theming.

As a concept I can sort of see what they were going for, with this ride being located in California Adventure, which has a Hollywood theme throughout it. However, the execution is just plain lazy. The writing is dated (yes, even for when it was created), the backdrops look slapped together, and the "animatronics" are bizarre and sloppy. If they tried to do this ride in a style more similar to The Great Movie Ride, it would have been a success.

That was weird. It doesn't feel like a Disney ride. Thank god for Monsters Inc..

Wow, that looks like it was a crazy ride! I've never been on it before, but I've been on the Monsters Inc. ride. I probably would like the Monsters Inc. ride more, it feels much more Disney.

I guess the original concept for the ride was that it was going to be a fast thrill ride with you trying to outrun the paparazzi, but that was around the time when princess Diana died in a car crash trying to outrun the paparazzi so they decided that the original concept would be in bad taste so they decided to slow the ride down and removed almost all references to the paparazzi, and also threw in a bunch of celebs that had disney contracts.

Even though it was an obvious failure, I will say ONE positive thing about it.... Disney at least attempted an original story for the attraction. Now everything is just The Ride, which neglects the genius storytelling that Disney Imagineering is capable of.

Embarassingly bad. I can't believe this made it out of the board room. I always wondered what the hoopla was about it. Thanks for sharing it.

This has gotta be one of the ONLY Disney rides where I just sit there and am speechless at how horrible it was. Glad Monsters Inc. is in there now, although to be honest, I could handle almost ANYTHING replacing this thing. *shudders*

That couple was most likely the only two riders who actually enjoyed that awful ride during it's brief existence.

@zenclaw13 Thanks for being so nice! The fresh bread and tortilla's are in the wharf area: the Mission Tortilla Factory and the Boudin Bread Factory. You have to sit through a little tour, but it's worth it. If you don't know where they are, they're at the enterance of the wharf from the Bug's Life side, not the entrance closest to the water, but you can get there by just walking through past the food court too. It's so nice to have a free snack in the middle of the day! Have a great day :D

I was originally going to ride this back in 2001, the opening year of DCA, but now after reading the horror stories and people saying it's the worst Disney ride ever, I'm glad I missed out on it! :)
