Hello Everyone!
This is Episode 26 and is another in my SuperTune series. Originally this was going to be one video - I thought “small plane, small video” - but it turned out to be much more involved than I first anticipated, so I’ve split it into two parts. Part 2 is almost done, so you won’t have to wait long.
Some of it is more of the same as the No 4 series, but there’s quite a bit of new stuff.
Video Production Notes:
Process is improving significantly and there’s incremental improvements in quality. Although I’m not yet 100% happy, it’s getting better.
So far I’ve spent 61 hours for both parts 1 & 2 and it’s 41 days (down from 53) since the last post and I was able to work on 24 of them, averaging 2 hours 32 minutes per session. Not quite the 35 days I was aiming for, but not too bad.
Time expended to make each minute of video has improved; from 2 hours 8 minutes to 1 hour 46 minutes.
Your comments are most welcome; keep them coming!
Jim

Brilliant Video Jim! A thought crossed my mind when watching you remove the threaded rod. It reminded me of removing engine studs from the head of the block. I remember my dad showing me how to do this with two nuts on the rod, tightened to each other you can then use the combination to unthread the rod/stud easily... just a thought

Thanks Jim. My dad showed me that too! It works; but in this case I couldn’t find a reverse threaded nut that would fit, unfortunately.

What a great video (since I have that plane) It’s been one of my favorite tools to use and to look at. They work well without doing anything, but the setup can be a little fussy, and now I see exactly why-it’s the smoothing and polishing those contact surfaces. I can’t wait to get started on mine. On to part 2…

Thanks Ray! I agree; David Charlesworth used to teach that even high quality tools need at least some fettling. The final piece of the puzzle that seems to make a big difference in everyday use is to keep the sole waxed. I didn’t emphasise that enough in the videos. Let me know how you get on with yours.

I bought that plane over 20 years ago. I'll admit I rarely use it. Got a couple of number 4's which I usually reach for. But I mostly work in my work shop and don't really need a pocket plane. I'll probably sell it soon.

Great video once again Mr. Linn! One question: would using nylon soft jawed pliers work better for taking off the brass screws than wrapping them in brass wire? I have one for adjusting brass set screws and they work well.

@mrlinnsworkshop Жыл бұрын
Yes they might. I don’t have them, though. Also, I think I was expecting to need more torque which was why I went down the copper wire and mole grips route. Turns out it didn’t need much torque at all. So yes, give the soft jawed pliers a go.

Well, in getting this out of an old plane, it makes me wonder why there isn't a slot in the top of this threaded piece so you can just unscrew it?????

If you mean the large screw for the Depth of Cut Adjuster Knob, I agree! When I first tried this on and old Stanley, I cut a slot with a hacksaw. Ended up stripping it out because I didn’t realise it was reverse threaded! Just kept making it tighter. Sometimes you spend hours doing it wrong, then feel a complete dolt when the penny finally drops…🥴

Thanks Ralph. It’s a problem I’m trying to get to the bottom of. Seems to change with each video and I’m not sure why. At some point I’ll figure it out.

@@mrlinnsworkshop Mr. Linn, you need a seperate microphone pinned to your shirt that transmits sound using Bluetooth to your camera or mixer (if you use one). Also, in most computer editing and production programs you can adjust the volume for the different sections of your final product in the editing process. The opening and closing sections were fine. The middle portions where you did the actual work had low sound. Perhaps the answer is you had the volume set too low on your camera for those parts, but you should be able to increase the volume for those parts in your editing. Excellent video overall, though.

Thanks Ralph; yes I’ve got those but the problem is that it sounds fine on my iPad but seems to change once I upload it. It’s annoying. Maybe something isn’t compatible somewhere. I’ve noticed other youtubers have much higher overall gain than mine. Maybe I should just turn up all the volumes and live with the distortion on the ipad knowing it’ll be ok on KZfaq?
