We’re back with another Supro Shootout, this time pitting the mid-60s vintage Royal Reverb 1650RTA against its modern counterpart, the 1650RT Royal Reverb. Both are 2x10 combos absolutely dripping with that classic, tube-driven Supro tone, but there are quite a few differences as well. The vintage Royal Reverb uses two channels and its classic tremolo-after-reverb signal chain for a good, accurate ‘60s crunch. However, the 1650RT sports a 3-way switchable power scheme, using two different rectifiers that give you tons of headroom and affect the tremolo noticeably. So which one wins? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Very close considering you have 50+ years of speaker break in on the old one and given that these are new they would likely sweeten after usage. Very impressed with the whole line and the ones I've played.

I'm sure a little tweak on the bass side of the EQ would sweeten it up a bit too.

great demo. Yes the old one is better in the mids. But I am rather sure that is a matter of units not tubes or insides. If someone once tries to swap the units from an old supro into a new one and vice versa it could be very interesting to "see" what we then can hear.

I think if he just cranks up the low end on the newer one, he could add that body that people are saying is missing

The original sounds better to me, but it could be because of the speaker. Those old Jensens sound great.

Have the real thing, 4 6l6 tubes had to replace the rectifier tube 20 years ago and that's all. Twin Jensen speakers are not falling apart .40 years later.

That vintage RR is godlike. The new one got to 90% I have a Supro Jupiter and I love love love it for what it is but it’s not a vintage Supro.

I'm not a vintage fetishist by any means, but the original sounds much, much better to me. More low end and much richer sound. The reissue is very thin sounding to my ears.

+GH See that's interesting because I'd say the exact opposite. To me, the new one has a lot more body to it, and a lot more punch

Both sound good to me; the newer one sounds...newer. I slightly prefer the old one, but I think a lot of the musical 'softness' you get you will eventually get over time in a new. Everyone can see the difference in appearance between the two, and while there may be a difference in what they looked like originally, there is also definitely a physical process at work. Is it crazy to think that internal components (speaker would probably be the biggest one) can be affected by age in some way, just like the outside?

Strong point about speaker spefications. Will the new ones last 50 years?

They both are butter, but the new one sells itself.

Is there a noticeable difference in sound projection? Seems like 60's original is bigger in physical size.

If I was recording on an album I’d want both! Playing at home.. the old one, and using with pedals probably the new one haha.

I think the new version has better crunch and more versatility. Nice demo ! please review the Supro Black Magick. That's probably the one for me. Thanks !

The low midrange on the new amp seems nonexistent compared to the old version. Is this just due to eq/pot settings being different?

These new Supro's are really something else and the Royal makes me question if I should sell my Tremo-Verb to buy one. So much more versatility and range in the reissues than the old ones that can be hit or miss.

+Jim Tuerk What is it you don't like about the Trem Verb? I am, trying to decide between the Royal, the Trem , and the Saturn! Any insight you can give me would be great! I only play at home and I like blues, surf and rock. I like the versatility of the Royal but I don't need it very loud. Do you think I could put a pedal in front and get that cranked tone, at reasonable volumes? Thanks !

+jim leiss I LOVE my Tremo-verb. Really the only reason I was considering a Royal would be for more headroom, but since I'm not touring in large rooms anymore, the Tremo-verb is a perfect small-room amp. The great thing about the reissues is that they take pedals really well. Put a nice boost in front, and you can get that saturated tube tone. I'd go Tremo-Verb.

+Jim Tuerk I have 2 concerns about the Trem Verb. How does the reverb and tremolo stack up, is it lush? How does the 10 inch speaker sound, when cranked, compared to 2x10 or 1x12? Thank you for all of your knowledge! It is a great help !!

Really close; the older model seemed to have superior reverb and tremolo, while the new one appears to have more versatility, but apart from that they’re really close. I didn’t listen with headphones, so the tones I heard were super close to me

Strangely, despite the improvements, the old one is better. It is deeper, warmer. The new one is a bit thin. - I think.

I am trying to decide on these new ones. Does anyone know how the Royal sounds, at low volumes, with an overdrive in front of it? I really like it's versatility but is it too loud, when cranked? Thus, an O.D.? Anyone?

+jim leiss Nah I've run it at really small venues before at about 9 or 10 o'clock and its a very nice sound and isn't horribly loud. I run mine at about 1 or 2 oclock usually. Nice break up on 35 watt.

I've yet to find a single Supro amp that completely cleans up. It's always at the point of breakup. There is no real clean on any of these amps. Not that I've heard. Still like them for what they are, don't get me wrong.

Yeah, you won't get one sounding like a Princeton, that's for sure. My Saturn MKII cleans up pretty nicely with my Jazzmaster though. Low output pickups are key here.
