The new Supros sound like a modern amp. They aren't 'bad' sounding amps, but they are voiced completely differently from the originals and have NONE of the grit, grime, or character of the vintage ones. If you can't get a vintage Supro to snarl with overdrive when cranked, you're not hitting it right, have weak pickups, or it needs to be tweaked or needs new tubes. With a Tele, that vintage Supro should be smokin' and growling. He didn't even come close to showing what they can do. I might have to buy a new Supro just to recreate this properly. This one seemed more like an ad for the new amps than a serious comparison. If we were after a serious comparison, we should get an equivalent vintage Supro with 2x 6973 that doesn't simply share a model number. Plus, why on earth are we close micing these amps? Stick an overhead in there and let's hear them in the room. Sorry for the rant. I just wish we'd ditch the slick production and obvious advert, and dispense some real information.

The Guitologist I think the new amp sounds pretty good. That’s why I came to this spot; to check out the new amp, not the old one. I guess for most people an old Supro is likely unavailable, worn out, a rats nest of wiring, unsafe and not suited to modern contemporary playing and performing environments (PA mic’ed/volume limited/pedal platform/“cleaner” musical genres). While all these things compromise what I remember from back in the day, they are realities for most buyers. I’ve seen your channel, so I can understand your perspective. But this video clip IS about presenting a current product and will be mainly viewed for that function. In a few years very few players would have ever heard a cranked plexi or Fender Twin in the flesh, let alone a Supro, but they will have ears trained by squillions of KZfaq videos. My Fender Twin will likely never be used again the way I used it originally, I am becoming reconciled to that and moving forward. Your experience with old amps wouldn’t be common, and I do envy you that. As a potential buyer, I found this video useful in the same way hearing old records formed my expectations of guitar amp sounds: i.e. probably manipulated and to serve the purpose of making music sound good. Finding out Black Dog was recorded through compressors and not even using an amp didn’t stop me trying to get those tones out of my guitars and amps. So, I don’t think the purpose here was really ever to educate people about old Supro amps.

My only beef with the Supro reissues is that the tube sockets are mounted directly to a PCB vs. chassis mounted for increased reliability.

They look cool and sound good but they skimped on the quality of the builds. In favor of a larger profit margin. Assembly in the USA not built also. My Supro guitar is cool and sounds great but needed much love to get it there. Cut the price by 30-50% and they are worth it. Got the guitar 50% off so wasn’t to upset but at the original new cost it would have been a return for certain. Got a USA made Peavey Delta Blues instead of the Supro Amp I was looking at. $300 yes!!!

Was about to say. I was reading a story about someone trying to replicate a customer's old supro amp (To make a copy that is quieter and more reliable with the same sound), and he struggled really hard until he put a really old and well used Jensen 10 inch speaker in the cab.

This just made me wanna hunt down an original. New is nice. Old one stomps on it though. When he played the country riffs, the new amp was close enough to my ear. When he played Communication Breakdown, the original was sooooo much nicer. Yes, partially the speaker no doubt, but the lower wattage and earlier components and probable difference in circuit just was not producing an equal tone at all. The tremolo isn't even in the same ballpark. That original trem was outstanding. The new amp trem sound can be had with most 75 dollar pedal you can get anywhere. Just my opinion. Thanx for a great demo.

I have a 65 Tremo-Verb. I put a G-10 Greenback in it and it sounds incredible. Better than both of these amps in my opinion. It doesn't have a lot of tonal variety, but it does what it does extremely well.

Supro really did the term "reissue" justice. I really like the new and improved models. If only Fender would do a similar job on their "reissue" amps for a decent price. Too expensive and not even close to the original, let alone improved.

+Jesse Maes I don´t know what you mean exactly with "really did the term "reissue" justice". Those two amps sound nothing alike. Fender has put out the Custom 68 Vintage Modified Series one year ago where did just what you ask for - a modernised take on classic old amps. Plus they have the Vintage Reissue Series that are reproductions of their older amps. They 68´s are in the same price range as the Supros. So basically all you said has already happened. ;)

I like this guy, I like his approach- straight forward without a lot of bullshit faces and gestures like so many others on KZfaq- good demo. I also agree with the a lot of what peeps are saying here which is the old amp is nothing like the new one tonally speaking that is... at least not to my ear through the computer anyway.

I own a 1964 Tremo-verb, It sounds amazing!!! Mine sounds far far better then what is demoed here. The speaker on the vintage Supro in this video sounds blown or just tired. This is obviously a demo to sell new Supro amps, I understand, but people< I will tell you, the old real thing is fantastic, and should never be confused with or for this 1622rt thing.

The "I Feel Fine" snippet sounded MUCH better on the older unit - but then, it has a well-broken-in speaker, and the new one doesn't. A better "vs" would have been with both amps playing through the same speaker...

So what your saying in the only similarities between the original and the reissue are the name? Nostalgia is the only thing that these amps have going for them. Unfortunately they are poorly made. For example the over priced Comet has tube sockets soldered directly to the circuit board. For a little amp that costs $1349 that is rediculous. How long is that cheaply designed rig going to last on the road? Not very long after it gets tossed around a few times. These amps are $699 amps at best not $1200-1400 amps. Cheaply made indeed. Supro designers make an effort to build them like a tank and I will buy one. They do look great and sound good though, but they can not stand the test of time the way they are built and they are over priced.

no, it doesnt need anything. Its one of the best functioning old valcos you'll hear. The modern one is a completely different amp voiced to compete with new ruined Vox et al. If you want it to 'wail' put a treble booster/ range master in front.
