Surf perch fishing with a Sabiki rig

I drive through Tracy fairly often to make a delivery...I'll lay on the air horn early in the morning for ya! lol

How do you keep the power bait on the rigging? Even when lake fishing we cant seem to keep our power bait on the hooks.

It was the powerbait honeyworms. They are tougher than the dough and stay on the hook forever.

It didn't tangle one bit. I use a 1 oz weight at the end so it never gets tangled.

Use a jig for your weight or a low profile spoon with a single hook. Try it out watch the trout pile in.

put the powerbait on the sabiki hook. I use a powerbait honeyworm, just 1 per hook is what I used

The sabiki rig, with 5 hooks, is allowed to use to catch surf perch in Oregon (as stated in the regulations).

Yup, no issues on my end (the rod has a lot of load to absorb the shock. I wouldn't try it with a stiff rod with little flex)

I use the hi-lo rig tied with a dropper loop (2-3 loops depending on how many hooks you wanna use)

And how far are those loops to each other? Don’t you get cringes when you cast that 9’6 foot pole with a 2oz weight. I have the same pole but I mainly use it for drift.

they are roughly 1 foot apart. the weight does sound overkill for that light rod, but I've had no problems with it - so far. I really like the action, it's perfect for surf fishing.

"tip" just means to put it on the hook. the honey worm is small, about a 1/2" plastic worm, looks like a maggot. the bite definitely picked up once I add it.

I just thread right on the hook. sometimes they dangle after a few casts, but I let it dangle. doesn't seem to make any difference.

Is it legal to use the Sabiki rig with all the hooks? Oregon is limited to three hooks but maybe that is species.

Yes, sabiki's are allowed for catching surf perch. P.81 of 2019 regs.

Three hooks in CA--but even in CA, there can be great variance on things depending on WHERE in the state you are. The easiest way to keep up is to go online for the time of year, place you are at. Or, as they say, have your lawyer with you anywhere in the US you want to fish. And that lawyer better be very, very current.

It's not this sabiki rig that gets bit it's the small hooks laced with powerbait that gets you bit make your own Sabiki rigs using the correct number of allowed hooks so that you're not teaching to break the law Sabiki rigs are only allowed for catching bait not for catching game fish and a perch is considered a game fish in California. Fish & Game is always watching the surf and the beaches in calif for poachers so good luck with that

In Oregon,surf perch may be taken by angling, hand ,bow and arrows, spear, gaff hook, snag hook and herring jigs

That is amazing, and sad. I have a regular Sabiki, I took off the other hooks and turned it into a "3 hook" set up. But it is STILL a Sabiki--hard to believe they would have an issue with that--but thanks for filling me in.

It's not waterproof, but I love it. It's the Marmot Moblis. One of the best outdoor jacket out there.
