The most interesting countries to me are those in between East and West during the Cold War. No country shows this better than East Germany, being culturally German, using surplus Wehrmacht Mausers, but being controlled by the Soviet Union. Let's take a look at some surplus ammo from the country that no longer exists.

Twas I whom sent the ammo. Glad you're finally getting around to shooting it. I look forward to the '61 Year marked ones being shot next Edit: It has a mild steel core, and is most definitely corrosive. The writing on the box was translated by @glabdo5000. I had one case get stuck in my rifle, and 1 round where the core ricocheted back at me and struck me in the stomach. I also purchased it really cheap, at just around 33 cents a round, and I bought around 1500 rounds

Thank you for the ammo. I really appreciate it, and sorry it took me so long to get to the video.

🇦🇺😎👍Hey Big John…I like that music 👍….when I see those old military riffles I always ask myself, I wonder how many people have been shot with them….I wish I’d never sold mine…I was out spotlighting one night and I was using 7.62x39 in fmjs out of a Howa bolt action. Every time I fired a shot cousin Tony who was driving the truck said he could see sparks going everywhere , not to mention the smell of the powder. Lucky we didn’t light up outback Australia 🤣👍 . Great video mate

I wonder if East Germany made the 8mm steel cases? They imported steel cases from Poland, Bulgaria, etc.. for other calibers. In the gun community, there are three types of smokeless gun powder. Flake, ball & extruded. Flake is self explanatory. Ball is sometimes referred to as spherical powder. Extruded is also known as stick or IMR powder.

Yes, they did. they produced the 8mm Mauser ammo with steel cases. The ones under concern here are those from 1958-1961. There is a stamp "04" at the 12 o'clock position at the bottom: The "04" stands for the manufacturer VEB Mechanische Werkstätten Königswartha (=mechanical workshops ar Königswartha, Dresden region, GDR owned factory) Also, the factory with code "05" produced 8mm Mauser ammo. Great research! Now I got a (double) proof of the origin of my 8x57Mauser I bought around 1988 with unknown origin but in large quantities. Re-packaged in neutral 50 round boxes. stamped * on 9 and 3 o'clock, 04 on 12 o'clock and years 58, 59, 60, 61 on the 6 o'clock position. The '58 rounds were crap (30-40 rounds of them all): 2x case burstings, many times I hardly could open the bold of my k98k. The ammo from 1959-1961 was flawless. New to me was the light weight of the bullet with 179 grains; sS usually have 196/197 grains. This explains, why on 100meter the bullets come out "flat" with this ammo. Approx. 6 years ago a gun smith in Munich told me that ammo could have been mashine-gun ammo. I don't know. Thank you for your research. Peter

I need to correct myself regarding the stamping: My residual 1961 ammo doesn't have the "'*" on the 9 and 3 o'clock position. Maybe the 1958 ammo had it, but they are long spent. But I still have a picture in my mind when sorting the rounds by year. Probably I fool myself after more than 30 years ;)

I got a ton of this stuff in with the “Czech” 8mm that centerfire sold a couple years back. Almost every round had case ruptures and had to be mortared out of my VZ24

John, you ask why one flash hole. Answer is economy. These very small Berdan flash holes are usually drilled. Cheaper to do just one as drill bits cost and time is also money. Failure to fire and hang fires correlates as you suggest to lower quality production primer chemical composition, and it can cause problems as it ages and how the cartridges are stored. Late WWII German ammo is famous for this one-hole practice and noted on the headstamp with the line. The line means one flash hole. However, they used a superb noncorrosive Type 30/40 priming compound by that time and these rounds usually still fire today with a very high success rate. You can identify this primer by its steel construction with a colored anulus to match the loading. The Czechs continued this one flash hole practice after the war for economy contracts like to Israel. However, there priming compound wasn't the best. They did indicate the one flash hole on the headstamp with a line. The Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR) was working on a strict budget. However, they obviously did not see a need to indicate this one flash hole practice on the headstamp. There 1957 ammo was brass cased, and they did put a six-point asterisk at 3:00 to indicate brass. It is also Berdan primed and with only one flash hole.

@5:34min the stamps on the box "Austausch" / "Abnahme" = Exchange / Acceptance. Eschange code "3/5" (what ever that means) with acceptance date 3.11.1959. ???? The term "Austausch" is familiar to me as a replacement code for the logistic chain of a military. So, the 7,62x51 NATO FMJ, lead core, has the "Austausch-Nummer" AB22 at the German Bundeswehr in the 1980ies. You need to research that with a logistics nerd ;) Hope, this helps a bit. PEter

Thanks for the video, I really enjoy your reviews on some of these mostly forgotten surplus ammo varieties. I have a decent amount of this stuff (600-900rds?) and have fired a couple dozen of them. The cases stick really bad in my K98's and even broke an extractor on one of them. It's still sticky, but manageable in my Vz24. Ammo is absolutely corrosive, I can see rust forming inside the empty cases that are sitting in my empty brass bucket. I do not recommend this ammo unless you can get it dirt cheap due to the sticky bolt issues.

I don’t really feel qualified to do something like that as I’ve never taken it past 100 due to range restrictions. 9-Hole Reviews does that kind of thing. There is a nearby range that has a 600 yard rifle range. I’d like to go shooting there sometime.

Thx for the vid 👍 as always interesting. Regarding your way of giving a date, then you write it as you say it. And should I choose between ours, with no 2A and your dating with your 2A, I'd take the date hassle and your 2A 😉

hi, to you ‼️ why upon fire do you bring away from your shoulder low at flank to repeating the shot ... ❓ 🤔 😁

Great question! I’ll frequently record multiple ammo videos at once, and sometimes I’ll shoot up to 70 rounds. It’s more comfortable to pull it off my shoulder for that many shots
