I've had a few pulley systems in my gym and didn't really love any of them, which was one of the driving factors behind buying a dedicated cable machine. However, I got the UPS in from Surplus Strength and wanted to share some thoughts on it.

I got both the high and low system early on and I never looked back. It’s been awesome. I got it because I have a very small home gym area and it was the only option I could get that made for a usable space. Highly recommend and the guys at the company are amazing as well.

Proud owner of the first unit in Portugal! Having used several types of pulley systems, ranging from dedicated setups to DIY stuff, I wasn’t really expecting the UPS to be worth the investment. But, after upgrading my old budget rack that featured a built in top/bottom pulley system, and having my wife pressuring me to get a setup for her to keep doing pulley work, I ordered it from Surplus Strengh. I was confronted with a long waiting list and even tried to drop out to go get something else, but Jason contacted me directly, he was a true gentleman about it and let me have it sooner, so I agreed. I was wrong, it is totally worth it. If you like quality and awesome feel, this is as good as it gets unless you have the space and budget to go into a premium selectorized unit. Get one, really!

I have both high and low, they work great, awesome quality. What I like about this more than REP/Titan attachment towers is it leaves the back of the rack open so you can walk through the rack. I know for people that have the rack butted against a wall that doesn’t matter. But for me in my configuration I walk through often and prefer this feature.

Just got the upper system with the upgraded aluminum pulley and is a very solid product to say the least, high quality. For those with ceiling constrains an excellent choice IMO. I had only one inch to stare so it worked great(84" ceiling). Functionally wise does what it suppose to do, 1:1 ratio is great no swing at all. Was a bit skeptical due to high price but is worth it, especially if you have space constraints for a stand alone system and of course have the money to spend. I mounted my on my RM4 Monster rack and it fits perfectly.

Man I really want to like this, especially being American made. But it’s so dang hard to pay that $800 when the Titan plate loaded tower is $499, even $399 recently when on sale. Not to mention I could probably spend about $100 on eBay to attain aluminum pulleys, plus not have any issues with plates swaying because of the guide rods. And it’s standalone so I can leave some attachments on it and it never be in the way of my rack. I really want to like this!!..but…

@@Xplora213 I hear ya but I really hate the idea of weights moving around (especially towards me lol). I would rather either make do with the Titan OR save up and get the Prime Lat pulldown with the weight stack. A good in between would be the Titan lat pulldown with 300 pound stack since it’s so close to Rogue. Instead of getting the Rogue one (at $3500?) I would opt for Prime because it’s not too much more for an elite lat pulldown that also has a functional trainer. This just doesn’t fit into anything that I would want. And I said I wanted to like it but I just don’t. That’s just me. Hopefully others think it’s amazing. I ain’t trying to stop anyone, just giving my reasons brother. This is the pulley equivalent of a Mutant Metals Ultimate Dip attachment. It is extremely solid and well made. Are there cheaper solutions available? Sure. But people who enjoy having nice things and are willing to put money into quality gear will find a lot of value here. This is especially useful for people squeezing racks into basements with low ceilings, as it only adds another inch or so to the overall height of a rack. I've had mine for a year, and the only drawback is that it isn't a Prime Single Stack.

I bought mine at much lower prices before inflation hit. I love them. The UPS stays in the same spot and the lower pully is not mounted unless I am using it. I had to take the pulley wheel off one end of the UPS to get it on my rack, so that is an option for space that is less than the pulley diameter, but more than the main unit height. One improvement could be finding a way to allow it to work with both 5/8" and 1" racks. Mine is 5/8" and I do plan to upgrade to a 1" rack at some point in the future (when we build a new house).

I wish there was the option with Rep to get 1:1 or 2:1 pulleys. I don't want to put 400lbs on there to only feel 200lbs! I guess I need to buy a few 100lb plates just for the cable system. I guess I'll get the selectorized Athena and use Gym Pin and/or bands to add weight but I wish I didn't have to. I have Rep 30 inch+16 and in half a garage so have no more room to add Lat Pulldown. @@futbol1972 I think it depends on if the space savings is important to you. From what I understand, the rhino is super versatile, however you have to load the plates on it and it also eats into your rack space whereas you currently have a separate unit. I did end up selling my Rogue Monster rack and UPS High/Low and got the Rep Ares which has a selectorized stack and I much prefer being able to just move a pin. Awesome video Brandon, probably my most favorite one up to date. I was looking for a great pulley system for a while without paying 4000$. I ordered this system now, you have helped me to take my decision. Now waiting patiently to try this on. But I have a question for you…I have a Rogue RML390F falt foot, I am not sure where to install it…because I have a multigrip pullup bar, I dont have much space on the side, although that where I really want it. If I install it in the back, I need to install a crossmember in the bottom to use the low pulley, problem is: I am guessing I wont be able to push my Rogue monster flat bench all the way back…either way I need to buy a crossmember for the side or the back. So Im kinda waiting to get the system in my hand and test the best solution. Any thoughts?
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon Жыл бұрын
I would think for the top portion the side would be fine as your rack has the same 30" depth that mine does. The trickier part regardless is going to be mounting the lower pulley as it's meant to go on a crossmember and not the flat foot. In that case the rear might make more sense. Maybe you could buy an additional crossmember and just mount it using hitch or detent pins when you need it. That way you can quickly remove it if needed when you bench.
@danredmond5589

Looks well made, but I just can’t get over the price. If you have the standard spud inc, you’ll have two pulleys. If you have one attached to a racks pull up bar/front cross bar, and the other one attached to a safety pin sited towards the top of the rack going across the rack OR attached to the rear cross bar, you got exactly the same for a fraction of the cost. I agree that the spud inc is unstable in standard set up mode, but the above hack is a game changer…
@marckolson
@marckolson 2 жыл бұрын
I personally had the Spud, and now have the UPS (Upper only), and it was a game changer. Completely removed the sway of the weights. I took my spud pulley and attached it to my lower crossmember, and now have a high and low row setup. I use my Powerblocks as spacers to do my low row work. It is expensive, but it's extremely well made! I highly recommend it!

@@marckolson did you have it set up as layed out above? If you didn’t, it can be set up to be a carbon copy of this. You can even get a couple of cheap pulleys on Amazon and do the same for under $25.
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 2 жыл бұрын
So my 2 cents having owned both. I didn’t have the dual pulley up top but see your point. I’d still say the quality of Spud was pretty low. Cabling was not very good, nor were pulleys, but it’s like $100 so can’t complain. The spud mounts lower and still has some play bc it’s not locked in place, so the UPS being rack height and locked in place pulleys is nicer. Both solutions get the job done though, the UPS just does everything better IMO.
@danredmond5589
@danredmond5589 2 жыл бұрын
For me, the R & D should be on the seating and pads for these type of systems. Something like the Rogue slinger seat, but offset from the uprights so you’re not directly facing them. Also, I found that attaching a chain to the bottom of the loading pin took away 80% of the plates swinging, and having the two pulley set up I talk about above, took away 19%! I agree though, there is nothing magical about the spud inc… you could achieve the same using stuff from Home Depot.
@marckolson
@marckolson 2 жыл бұрын
@@danredmond5589 I think it all comes down to how and where you want to spend your money. Like Brandon said in the beginning, you can 100% do this same type of system on the cheap with some $20 pulleys from home depot, and some home made cable that you make yourself...and functionally you'll probably get a similar result. Do you want a Pontiac Fiero, or a ACR Viper....both are cars and will get you were you're going, but with very different fit and finish along the way!

I think the home gym space is large enough now to accommodate boutique manufacturers that are satisfied remaining a smaller size for the foreseeable future. Or they simply have problems scaling up. Getting a unit into every home gym may not be the goal of most home gym manufacturers and it may not even be plausible if it were. I think the only manufacturer capable of that actually is Marcy or Bowflex. Even Rogue wouldn’t be able to stock every Dick’s sporting goods in the nation. This is great though for the customer because a smaller manufacturer is more likely to be accommodating to the customer. I’ve gotten custom colors and sizes from Mutant Metals and Prime but Nautilus wouldn’t even let me choose a specific color they listed on their website because a gym chain had exclusive rights to it, ridiculous. A $800 detachable pulley system isn’t for everyone but I’m glad it’s an option because I’ve gotten stuff that few people want or need.

You may have touched on this, so apologies if you did, but in terms of smoothness, how does this compare with Rogue's Slinger? I have a Slinger combined with a Rhino in the back of an RM-6. I would say it works well, but it's not "weight stack smooth". Some of that is likely due to the design of the Rhino, and perhaps it's just me, but the pulleys on both my Rhino & Slinger have some "wobble". I have no idea if that factors into the feel, but I've considered trying to rectify that. Having said that, if it ain't broke... The UPS would offer flexibility in orienting my rack, but post assembly I can't really imagine trying to move the d@mn thing. The Slinger limits my options due to rack/ceiling height and protruding up between floor joists.

It's fairly smooth. I think a big thing that makes a difference is if there is any slack in the line.The tighter it is, the smoother the action will be since there is less play. I don't recall noticing it was any more smooth than the slinger though, but I didn't have much issue with that.

I can see the high quality in this system but the Rep Fitness system is better with actual guide rods and weight horns. The Rep one does add to the footprint of the rack and probably doesn’t work on a Rogue rack though.

Yeah I think if you have a rack that makes an actual system for it, it would make more sense to go that route.
@chrisdonnell2575
@chrisdonnell2575 10 ай бұрын
The real problem with this system is the damn loading pin. Let's say you start at 240lbs for lat pulldown and want to do drop sets you have to take cable off, remove some weights, put it back on and by then your muscles are rested and you aren't really accomplishing your goal. This guy was clever but not enough to also sell a horizontal loading pin. I'd love to have that put on 4 45s and a ton of 10s and quickly pull off 1 or 2 off each side and keep going. The more I think about it I will have no choice but to get Athena with weight stack and use Gym Pin and bands to get weight up there. Having the perfect height of the cable for various exercises and not having to set it up, take it down, load and unload weights would make it worth it. I got the Rogue USA Olympic plates which are super thin so can add a lot of weight on Gym Pin so have that going for me.

Hello. I’m using the UPS since April and all in all I’m happy with it. Regarding the price I have to say that I live in Germany and shipping plus tax and customs doubles the price you mentioned. Around 1000$.But for me in my very small gym it is the best solution. Yes,it swings sometimes,but not in a way you can’t stop if you let the weights totally down for a second . The only real downside is that the holes in the low attachment do not align with the holes in the crossmember of my Rogue RML rack. I had to make my own,much smaller pins to fix that.Fortunately I own a lathe and could make them myself. It works,but it looks a little bit improvised.

I have a rack but I want to get a stack based functional trainer or something ideally that I could do both on, maybe lat by pulling up a bench, although some of the Amazon ones say they have attachments, they don’t look to sturdy… Do you have any videos or thoughts on this? Love your prime stack and other pulley reviews. Price isn’t a massive concern but I only have space for either a functional trainer or lat pull down and would love one that does both. My surplus strength ups high arrived yesterday after waiting for it for two months. It is disappointing. The machining is sloppy with nearly a 1/16" of an inch gap between the uhmw and the bar. It rattles all over the cross piece. The bolt area has no support behind it all. I sent a mail to Jason (the owner) to discuss. At first, I mailed an automated email with a no-reply address without realizing it. When I didn't get a response, I sent it a second time to the correct address. Jason was noticeably upset in his response that I hadn't waited 24 hours and he offered to send me some tape to fix it. My impression: don't bother with this thing. Rack mounted gliders like the Bully Glider is a much better option. I personally have that device and it is incredibly well made and smooth.

To close the loop, my 1/16" of inch uhmw shim came today. I sawed it to fit and now the device fits my rack correctly and feels incredible with the bully glyder holding the weight. I am confident this is due to the ups high not accounting for the metric based 3" racks (which are actually 75mm)
