I live in Denmark and we have chinese cars available here. All I can say is that.. Chinese cars are the best thing that has happened for the middle class in a long time. Finally premium cars for affordable prices with quality materials and superior warranty. Unlike the overpriced, half plastic, poor warranty and boring european cars. Legacy autos in US should be very afraid.

@@maggiechan33 That's great to have the cash, but it would have to hurt to throw so much money away in taxes, sorry tariffs, It only show the true costs of manufacturing a car in the USA, we here in Australia killed off our own car industry due to no investment in making them cheaper, even the yanks pulled the plug on Holden, and now it's come home to roost for themselves, they can't say they didn't see it coming, they will only survive if they invest in tech for the car industry they might survive but if they thing that the Federal govt will protect them and things don't change which means jobs have to go, the industry will collapse on it's self, the investment has got to happen now.

In my generation (61 years old) there are still many myths and disinformation around EVs. The BYD seagull is beginning to sell really well. @@Trust_but_VerifyIf Americans earn three times as much, but also pay three times as much for what they buy, they're not necessarily ahead. And if that puts you in a higher tax bracket, you could be behind. Given that most Americans aren't saving, there's little benefit to earning more only to spend more for what you need. I liked my PHEV, but nowadays, hybrids feel like paying for two cars (gasoline and electric) and getting one. The short range vehicles available in the UK and in China seem adequate for the original poster, and some short range Chinese vehicles are apparently made with sodium ion batteries, which should become crazy cheap. Even LFP batteries, for 30 kWh, are costing only about USD 1500ish. It's hard to save enough in a smaller battery pack to afford an engine, etc., so hybrids for short range are making less and less sense. What's needed is the idea that enough people in America are fine with 100 mile range, like many in the UK and elsewhere, especially if you include second vehicles.

@@Trust_but_Verify "Hybrid would work for you in for those range". well.. yes. and full EV will work even better for 5-10 mile trips. as mentioned, i already own an ICE vehicle for longer trips. to get a hybrid would be 50% redundant, paying for gas functions i will not use. can US even produce a hybrid for less than $15k? unfortunately no. the US is losing the affordability EV space.

"Privacy concerns" is simply yellow peril racism. We know for a fact Tesla spied on car owners. Is that a concern anyone expresses over buying a Tesla? I'd strongly consider buying a Chinese EV as long as they're reliable, as no one in America seems interested in making budget friendly EVs.

Kia/Hyundai and toyota are selling EV's here and are getting tax incentives to build battery factories and ev factories in the US. Other Japanese and Korean companies are building battery factories. They are supplying the batteries for VWs US built EV's. Chinese companies are licensing battery tech to Ford and GM for us battery factories. Vinfast is selling EV'S in the US. Are those "yellow peril racism" too? The tesla privacy problems and the ones from every other manufacturer are why I don't want to buy any modern car and there is a movement toward cracking down on those problems. I definitely don't want to give the Chinese communist party easy unregulated access to that stuff or a potential vector to knock out charging networks or screw with the power grid.

It is 14.4 inches shorter, 2 inches narrower, and 3 inches lower than a Chevy EV Bolt (not the EUV Bolt). It has a 30 KW battery and a EPA range (converted from CLTC using ratios from an article in insideevs) of 123 miles (the Bolt's range was 259 miles). It has a 74 hp motor and a top speed of 81 mph (the Bolt had 200 hp). After the Federal Tax credit, the Chevy Bolt was $20,500 in the US. It was interesting listening to Sandy Munroe, he sees similarities with US protectionism against Japanese cars in the late 70's 80's. He believes it was the demand of US consumers for smaller more fuel efficient vehicles that eventually let them in. I see similarities too, back then the US car makers did not invest quickly enough in developing smaller fuel efficient vehicles to compete with the Japanese cars. Now, except for Tesla, the legacy makers are way behind the Chinese in EV's, so these tariffs will either give them some breathing room to catch up, or make them lazy and think they can ignore the threat of Chinese EV's. I can 100% understand the US wanting to protect it's car industry, however it will of course effect what the American consumer pays. Sam, I think you don't get US viewers watching Chinese EV content mainly because it is just not all that interesting when you know you can't buy one in your country. I used to watch reviews on some of the very small cheap micro EV's in China, but lost interest because none of them seem to be coming to Australia. I think Australia's ridiculous and misleading ANCAP rating stops us getting any of these micro EV's.

Im an old guy too heres what I remember from the Japanese car invasion. The quality for the price was too good to pass up. The Japanese model was different we all found out in the aftermarket parts. Cheaper good quality up-front but when you had to get repairs the parts were so expensive compared to the same parts for OEM American cars. This model is now adopted by everyone to compete. That said Japanese make the most dependable ICE cars, same with their motorcycles.

@@jaaklucas1329 Good point, I remember someone telling me a similar thing. I think this is another worry legacy auto has, the lack of moving parts and maintenance in EV's is a concern for the massive ICE spare parts industry. I also suspect Japan is resentful about EV's because they have spent many years gaining the reputation for making very reliable well priced ICE vehicles. Now that the Chinese have got the jump on them with EV's and batteries I think they really don't want EV's to succeed.

I am 75 years old and I would buy two electric cheap Chinese cars. I am tired of checking oil, radiators and belts on vehicles, ti include transmission fluid. If you drive one you will never go back to ice cars and trucks.

I think that even with the tariffs, Americans will still purchase a Chinese EV. I have a feeling that they'll still be a better alternative, even after the tariff, than what legacy will be offering.

For young people, just about everything they ever bought was made in China, except cars. So for them, American/Japanese/European made cars are the exception and they are expensive. South Korean cars are fine and a bit cheaper. Why wouldn't they want cars made in China?

My biggest concern is there is no infrastructure for parts and service of the Chinese cars. What goodis a cheaper car if you can't get it fixed.

Chinese cars with 122% tariffs you won't have to worry about spares as they wont sell. But the rest of the world will move forward with innovation and technology.
