The Ontario Rat 7 and Rat 3 make for a strong survival combination. The 7 is great for chopping, splitting, and anything else you want to use a large knife for. The 3 is good for food prep, cleaning fish, field dressing game, and is a good bushcraft knife.

@@EverydayTacticalVids haha I saw that. And honestly I think it's sad that they don't get the attention the deserve. Esee came on the scene and it seems like people forgot about Ontario, people fight about it, but, IMHO, they are very comparable. Also they have updated the sheeths, better nylon, they have two straps Still but one wraps around the finger guard which took away a lot of that rattle people complained about. Thanks for the review and actually throwing the rat in there. It honestly put a smile on my face.

-Buck 104 Compadre in "D2" steel from "SK knives". 4 1/2" blade, brown micarta scales, comes with nice leather sheath. I replaced with Kydex. Best ~$100 knife I have seen on the market in years. Along with the Esee PR4 and the Esee AGK (3 1/2" blade) -Ontario Blackbird SK-5 or SK-4 (nobody seems to talk about the 4?) Both have 154cm steel, micarta scales. -Work Tuff Gear Campo, Lamigo, Tayal (or Mini Tayal) -Condor Hudson Bay -Ontario (older versions with 5160 steel) - SP-1 (fits KaBar 7" leather sheath) ,17 (fits in Buck 119 sheath) 41,42,43,46. These all work better if you simply you cut off top Kraton / rubber finger guard. -Varusteleka 110, 140, Skrama 200. -The Morakniv 2000 and Glock 78 go wherever I go. (plus, Silky saw and Estwing axe) -Old School (Just for fun) - Kabar 1205. Western Boulder Colorado L46-5. I liked your list. Most are out of my "willing to spend" range. Thank You!!

Nice collection of knives, Tim, and I like how you personalized two of them. My favorite go-to knives are my two Strongarms which I purchased after the "gauntlet" series. One of my favorite folding knives is the Ontario Rat One so I will look into the Ontario blade you presented. I have an SP8 that a Vietnam Huey pilot friend gave me and it's a chopping beast.

You just covered two of the knives in my EDC rotation! I love my Tops Silent Hero! I can't really think of anything to complain about in the knife itself. The blade design is like a beefed up kitchen knife. It has a good point on it, and the blade geometry is outstanding. It cuts like a lightsaber. The sheath is functional, but I had a Kydex one made that allows it to ride close on the hip. All in all, the Silent Hero is awesome! The Benchmade Arvensis also gets a lot of use from me. It is my only stainless fixed blade. I normally prefer 1095 or 5160. But Benchmade puts a helluva edge on the Arvensis and it maintains the edge well. I have field dressed and processed several deer with mine and done some wood working and random chores and it still shaves! But I have some caveats concerning the Arvensis as a field knife. The acute point and aggressive swedge they put on it doesn't leave much for a working spine and this combined with the dual guard really makes the knife more of a fighting knife. I carry it more in an urban environment as a back up to my CCW and will switch over to the Silent Hero if I know I am going to be hiking, walking the dog out in the woods, or working out on my grandparent's property. The Arvensis can work for light woodworking chores in a pinch, but the top guard makes it hard to choke up on the knife and the lack of any real working spine takes away from its field utility. It has a, acute piercing point that could really make it dangerous as a fighting knife, but really isn't what you'd want to be digging, prying, or batoning with. It is well made and extremely comfortable in the hand. The smooth G10 grips feel like well worn river rocks contoured to your hand, and while I was worried about them slipping, even they seem to provide a good grip even covered in slush and blood. Two really well made knives, but I regard the Silent Hero as a far better field knife due to the weaponized clip point and dual guard Benchmade put on the Arvensis.

My Rat 7 is super. KC two tone orange/black scales fit great into my Cleveland kydex custom. Added essee pouch and tin- tricked out well and ran a firesteel down the side of the sheath. The knife strops back quickly and the coating came off after hard use within 1 year so. I removed it with sandpaper and simply use olive oil coat. Damn nice working blade- on a budget.

He knows a lot more about knives than I do. That notwithstanding, I continue to not understand why people will invest a lot of money to add chopping capability when they could buy a hatchet and live with a cheaper knife. For example, Swiss Army knife and a fiskars hatchet. I also own more expensive blades (lt Wright and gransfors) and I like them a lot but you can get by just fine with cheaper alternatives.

I’ve gotta get back into the woods. It’s the best escape from this crazy world. I get a lot of use out of my Gerber StrongArm too. Trying their ultimate one now for fun now they they took the BG crud off of it lol. That dropped it to $33 USD so it seemed worth it to at least experiment for….but when going to the woods I stick to the proven. I’ll check out that 3 dog knife company and the Rat 7! Great video!

The Terava Jaakaripuukko (soldier/hunter knife) is a good bushcraft/survival knife. It comes in 80CRV2 steel (similar to SK85), is 4.2mm thick (0.17") and is available in 110mm (4.3") and 140mm (5.5") lengths. Full scandi grind, about 59 rockwell hardness and a light surface annealing to make it tougher. It has a very comfortable high density rubber handle. Full enclosed tang. Finns are allergic to exposed metal in the handle. About $70 with an excellent leather sheath with a plastic liner, a tight fit and a very convenient retention system. It has a big brother called the Skrama (sort of a Seax) in 7.8" or 9.4" lengths. Same steel and thickness. Long rubber handle for carving and chopping tasks and more of a modified sheepsfoot profile. 25 degree edge for carving in the first couple inches and 35 degrees for the rest for chopping. Look on the Varusteleka site and search for Terava (Finnish for sharp). They also have Sandvik 12c27 stainless versions.

Check out some Hardcore Hardware from Australia or Kizlyar and Melita both Russian also Fox knives from Italy . Those have a different flavor for your appetite . Sometimes I will just go on Etsy and search Russian knives or knives made in the US and look at all the true Artisan knives of some great makers that if they had a big name I wouldnt be able to afford their knives, I just got a knife that is S90V with a crushed carbon fiber/wood burl handle for 250 its the size of the larger Work Tuff Gear Nomad . Its a steal , if it was made by a large company it would be over double that and it was made for me by hand .

Imo for a proper survival knife its gotta be a villagers khukuri. So long as they're made well and you're willing to learn how to use them (what part of the blade is for what task) they're unbeatable. I made the mistake of buying a full size khukuri which is more like a machete but its still a beautiful blade.

Awesome video! Have tried to get my hands on the Spyderco UK for a while now but no luck, I´m used to Finish and Swedish knives (being from Sweden myself) , like the Mora, M95 peltonen and Terävä Jääkäripuukko, so I´m thinking the "Rokka Knives Korpisoturi" might be a good substitute, it is more of a military style, basically a "tactical" or "military" bushcraft/survival knife. Another great buy a couple om months ago was the Swedish/USA "EKA RTG-1" (made by Rowen), not many have heard about this one but I love the feel in the hand and it´s a beast :) Would love to see you try out these brands from Finland and Sweden Thanks for some great videos! You know what blew my mind by camillus? The carnivore-x machete/multi tool, that comes with the spear point barbed skeleton knife that can be used to tip a spear. Solid solid budget tool indeed. Sometimes when I think budget, I think gas station quality knife (I know there's good budget knives) but camillus won me over with that machete. It used to come with a crappy nylon sheath but now it's a polymer sheath and reminds me of kydex. Check it out

Been considering the RAT 7 for some time, but you sold me on it! My only reservation has been that I already have the RTAK II, so why would I need another large knife? But a 7inch version would be easier to carry. Thanks for sharing!

The papa bear is a beast of a knife, I've beat the shyt out of mine and still going strong. The only thing I did to mine was dull the back edge.

The Ontario RAT7 and the RD6 are on my list. What do you think of the Tops Tex Creek 4 as a bushcraft knife in comparison to Tops BOB?

I like to use my original Jessica X designed by Chris Tanner not the hollow grind remake , also as a pair I love the Condor Plan A Bowie with the Condor Ripper both designed by Julio Diaz . Those to in concert are un stoppable

I use the Real Steel Bushcraft Gen III. Smal knife. Budget friendly. Sharp edge. D2 steel. I got it for 50€ with kydex.

I'd buy a Strongarm purely for that ambidextrous sheath. The only other knife I have that has a sheath that comes close is the BK-2.

Kershaw Camp 10 is a awesome chopper. I like my Cold Steel Srk Sk5, i modded it and put a flatgrind on it instead of that hollow grind. That price on that Spyderco Bushcraft always gets me laughing. for that price i make 2 knives out of that same steel. Way overpriced

How about the steel will argonaut 810 or the Jeo Tec #39 ? Both knives won’t break the bank like some of those $300 + knives. They are probably just as durable, won’t rust and like I said cost affective!

Where I live, I'm not allowed to have weapons so no survival knives for me until I move. What I will say is that I'm not a big fan of clip point knives for survival or camping. I prefer a knife with a wider angled and sturdier tip for digging and prying with the tip. And even though a clip point can be useful for lanyard work, fids and nails work much better.
