Survival Skills with Will Lord
Lots of different skills are needed when you want to think about surviving in the wild, this is a short video where I will teach you how to make a net that will help you catch something to eat in the wilderness.

Hi Will! I have to tell you this was an especially enjoyable episode for me. My grandfather was a commercial fisherman in the 1930s and 40s on the old wooden tuna boats, known then as the _Tuna Fleet,_ back home in S. Cal. They would hand make all their nets and he would hand make all of the little fishing retrieval nets as a gift for all of us (boy) grandkids the first time we went fishing with him, along with a fishing pole. I watched him make mine and do you know that he use the _exact_ same knot and techniques and tools that you do, except I think he called that one wood piece that you wrap the string around a "shuttle"! Anyhow, to watch you do this and patiently explain the knot and wrap, and the tools, and the techniques to make it really brought back awesome memories for me (although he wasn't wearing a throw net over his head, Granny would have probably had him committed 😂😂😂). And to think that this is knowledge that's been passed from generation to generation since the remote past - Thank You so much for this, Will!!! Your videos always take me to places in the past I never thought I'd understand or see, but this one (for me) was one hell of a ride! You're a special Dude 👍

My grandfather netted hares and rabbits before the war. He had a netting needle in his tools a skill that has existed for thousands of years. Thanks for showing us Will.

I can now apply this survival tip towards making fishnet stockings. May be lost in the woods, but I can stay fashionable.

I was always intimidated to try making a net because it looked very difficult to get it started. You explained it very well. Seeing the net on your head gave me plenty of ideas for how to carry the net after it’s made. Wearing it would be the best way to carry it so wrapping it around yourself in some fashion is great. Being light weight it could be removed and used to carry foraged items. Then rolled and continue to wear it until needed again. Foraging could be quick with a net like this. Then taking idea further, making a net technique to create other items such as an actual forage bag or sack to carry any items if you are lucky enough to catch meat. You could sure create many necessary items by just knowing this technique. Thank you!

So if you chain out 50 loops the net would end up being 25 loops wide. Good to know i need to start with an initial chain that is double the length of my desired piece. Could also be pretty cool to use a popsicle stick width and make smaller netting to make a poncho or hat thats a bit warmer than your headdress but cooler in summer than a fully crocheted garment and could be used as a way to carry smaller items gathered up like greens or strawberries mushrooms. Thank you for teaching the netting knots.

Rather than mess around like that I would take pea netting costs next to nothing, and weighs nowt.
@hetrodoxly1203
@hetrodoxly1203 Жыл бұрын
Where are you going to get pea netting from in a survival situation, the problem is it's too light, the mesh is too small and tangles to easy, the best material for making nets is hemp, it does have it's draw backs, it has to be dried after every outing or it rots, rabbits will run over small mesh, you need it so their legs pass through it so they tangle themselves.
