"where's Barry?" I almost cried at this one. My brother and I got left at a gas station once and my parents were 10 miles down the road before they realized that half their children were missing. I always asked my father afterwards "how did he not notice the noise level in the backseat dropped by 50%." Of course my other brothers response for not saying anything is because they had more room!

He had to go fetch me back from the petrol station once he remembered he'd been there that day... twenty minutes later. I was fine, by the way - the nice fella at the station gave me an ice cream and kept telling me my dad was probably on his way back, but I knew I was in for a long wait because he'd only realize I wasn't in the back once mum asked him where I was. Gives me flashbacks of when I was younger and we took a "10 minute detour" in the Austrian Alps to save on a £20 motorway fee. It somehow ended up adding 8 hours to the journey as we got lost in the Austrian alps.

Oh, Oisín. A friend of mine recently gave me exactly that advice about tackling difficult subjects in the car with your teens so they can't get away. Wonder if she got it from her Irish mother-in-law... At least he doesn't have to listen to the cricket, soundtrack to endless childhood long drives for me. Or worse, the Archers Omnibus. (For those not familiar, it's a soap opera. On the radio. About farming. A uniquely British childhood misery, one suspects.) And not to get too "in my day..." but at least he has a phone for entertainment!
