Surviving Texas Winter Storm 2021 in an RV: No Power..No Fuel..What Happened? (90s Newell Coach)

This week in Texas has been one wild ride. Surviving the 2021 Snowmageddon and dealing with the unprepared Texas power grid left us all in the dark...literally...with ZERO warning. My coach was never winterized or prepared for conditions like this. Why should it be? Dallas has not been this cold since 1989 and the duration of this winter blast is record setting. Mistakes were made and it was one heck of a process. I am just glad for the lessons learned. Hopefully this video educates others and prevents similar mistakes from being made in the future.

Young Man, You will come through this fine, and you won’t make the same mistakes again. My disaster story was getting caught at the Grand Canyon during a severe snowstorm, that’s right a snow storm, in our RV. I had shorts, hiking poles, sunglasses, and wide brimmed hats. How about winter coats? Nope. Lesson learned for our family, no permanent damage, but lesson learned.

Make shure you use 0-15 oil for winter that summer 20- 50 is not good for freezing temps also a good battery powered drill & socket adapter can be used as a starter if in a bind, just remove pullstart & use crankshaft nut. If you have nat gas get dual fuel gen or buy a conversion kit so no gas pump trips. This is not going to be a temporary thing as we go forward, (backward really), these power outages will come more frequently & last longer, also if you can have 5gal water delivered monthly so you have plenty of drinking/cooking water available, we keep about 30-40gal in stock. God bless yall & stay prepared.

Dude, i'm up in texoma literally 5 minutes from the lake. It got to -14 with wind chill out here the last few nights and we *just* now started getting consistent power back, our house dropped to 37 inside and we've all just been bundled in layers and lounge robes trying to keep our heat in, the only saving grace was our gas stove that we could leave lit and sit around for a while to keep warm. we won't have water until at least tuesday either. It has not been fun in the slightest.

...you beat Tyler Texas, we got down to -9, I think. My Rendezvous was facing north, cause I park in the street. The water in the two radiator hoses, had frozen Solid, but the engine was ok 😯 the water pump froze Monday evening, I didn't know at the time. my serpentine belt was stuck frozen to the pulley, and snapped it. I was able to unseize the water pump with boiling hot water, it's practically externally mounted 👍 I did have Prestone Antifreeze in it.

Was working on site last week when the temp dropped, I generally sleep in the trailer- went to bed at 55ish degrees, woke up at less than 20. Broke down and got a hotel Wednesday night, and figured I'd finish up Thursday afternoon. Parts that were supposed to be there Thursday AM didn't show up, so I kept busy doing what I could (I build police cars for a living, and I was waiting on 5 band antennas and Radars). Parts arrived Friday, Figured I'd pull an all nighter and get them done and be gone Saturday mid-day (before the sleet/ snow)- The Universe had other ideas. Friday the temps fell all day, and by the time I was ready for final assembly, it was too cold to re-install the interior (plastics get really brittle below 40 degrees), and the building I was working out of not insulated. So, I was having to run the vehicles in the building with the heat blasting to warm up the panels, let the building air out enough to not kill me, and then work until the plastics (and I) got too cold to continue. Add to that the DeWalt batteries I use don't like the cold (or heat cycling like that), so I'd get about a minute of run time before they died. By the time I finally finished up between the cold, and lack of sleep, what should've taken me 6hrs tops had taken almost 24. I drove back from Schulenberg, TX to Temple in freezing rain dragging a 16 foot enclosed trailer. After being awake for 40hrs straight. With zero trailer brakes (the controller on my truck quit working automatically). Hope you are stayin warm.

I bought two Aldi's WorkZone 2000 watt inverter generator, I bought one nearly 3 years ago, the other one in late 2019. They sell them at oddball times of the year, never during the right season. I've used the older one a few times, when we had sporadic power outages in the spring in 2019 & 2020, but hardly for days. I ran that little sucker since Sunday till late Wednesday evening constantly. the 2nd unit was still in the original box, I ran it all day tuesday & Wednesday. Both sat outside, I ran 3 heavy extension cords from the generators, to inside my house and storage unit. They powered our LED lights, our phone chargers, and the electronics on our gas stove. I had a full size fridge on each unit 🤘 For $400, those two generators were lifesavers here in Tyler Texas. They were originally $399 at Aldi's, but I bought both of them on clearance 🤘 It was money well spent.

As a 20 year “motor home in the winter” guy, it’s really not that difficult, just new to you so u will def figure it out .... we pump our pipes full of RV antifreeze for when it’s really Cold or unused for extended times ....using a sump pump, short hose and a 5 gal bucket.... takes a few minutes for entire RV , we then add a 5 gal sealed container of RV anti freeze with jumper hose to 12v onboard pump so can flush toilet ..... , only nubes think blowing them out really works .... Would recommend heat taped or pipes and heat pads for tanks if not already there to winter water use ..... keep ur head up, glad you don’t have kids or elderly to Worry about .....

Did 16 days with no power in my home. Ice storm Christmas Eve 1996. Virginia. The year you were born. Had enough limb damage that the woodstove was well fed. Whole house was warm in 4 days. No water having a well and no power/generator. Melted ice and snow on the stove for whore bath water. Listened to battery powered AM radio and read 4 books next to the stove. Always keep food stored in your home/RV. And keep the RV full of fuel/propane/water. It can be your shelter. Events like this can cripple you. As you now know. Love the channel. Catching up on some old posts. Fix the RV. LOL.

I feel for you Stapleton and your fellow Texans , I live in Alberta about nine hours north of the Montana border and it’s cold here right now but that’s normal here so we’re prepared for it plus most of our heat is from natural gas . I know we need to lessen our carbon footprint but I’m concerned about relying solely on electric for these reasons . Stay strong and good luck , your attitude is commendable .

...space heaters and inexpensive dehumidifiers have a history of catching fire. They are built cheap, by the "Chy-na Free Market" for a reason. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission should do a better job of inspecting and prohibiting products from entering the U.S., when those products are designed and built poorly, and can pose a danger to the consumer. Especially products, which are designed with planned obsolescence 🤨

Wont say I'm right there with ya but we are over on the south side near i20 and park springs. Power shut off Monday about 3 am and didn't come back until 36hrs later for us. Pulled the little 4k generator out and ran some cords in to a heater and so we could charge the phones. Got the fireplace stoked up and went ahead and rode it out. Went out for more gas on Tues. Told work put me down for some vacation days. No sense in venturing out and bending up a ride. Especially when it'll be in the 60s next week. If it woulda got worse we would have dug out the kerosene heaters and moved forward. Fortunately the power came back. News said fifteen Arlington schools were flooding with broken pipes. I cant imagine how many homes suffered that fate with people bailing out and leaving them unattended. Glad you are safe. I hope you are taking good care of your lady friend. She didn't look near as pleased in this vid. "Keep Moving Forward!"

I'll bet they have road greaters and other heavy equipment that can help. That's what they are doing here in Oklahoma. Boy did I pick a piss poor time to move here lol 😆😂🤣. Keep in mind that they do make smart chargers that do kick off when the battery is full and right back on when the battery charge gets low again but they have circuitry that monitors it
