The best definition of sustainability that I have come across is to "cater for the needs of the current generation, without compromising the needs of future generations". (UN, 1989).

Yes, exactly Earth will most likely survive, nobody is saying it cannot sustain itself, but what about humans? Will our population crash as a consequence of lack of resources and global unrest, will we have more climate fluctuations disrupting our comfortable way of life and will it bring other negative consequences that haven't yet fully materialized. Sustainability is about humans also existing on and with Earth for everyone's benefit

@paulflute I think you are on the right track. IE: If you go to poor countries the environmental devastation is much worse. The land rivers and lakes are polluted with garbage, dirty drinking water causes much illness and death. Poor countries have much lower pollution standards so industry takes advantage, the birth rate is higher which puts a strain on the few resources available. People in first world countries can afford to be more conscientious, environment is cleaner than in the .........

@HeliosCore FYI asteroidal mining is already here, just look at the largest PGM & Gold mine - Vredefort crater in South Africa. Secondly Nuclear Fusion doesn't need to ''come true'', it's the most fundamental energy process governing the life of every star. and the underconstruction ITER reactor will be complete in 2019, that's 7 years away and not a by any stretch a 'dream'.

The planet can easily sustain double, if not treble the population of what it has now so say, up to 20 billion, if not more. The problem is the amount of land and resources we are consuming. It has been said through many academic journals that if everyone on the planet lived with the same amount of land space and ate the same amount of food, then the population would need only the space of France to survive. Reduce our resource and land consumption not the population.

Thank you for the simple, straight forward explanation. The term sustainability has been tossed around as if it's just been invented. This is the way man farmed since the dawn of agriculture. It's not the way corporations farm, it's the way people farm. Great vid! I embedded it on my blog. Thank you!

@DANCINGBONES dinosaurs needed that vegetation to survive. the vegetation of our time is practically going extinct due to anti-environmental machines, unclean air and unclean water. mind you that plants still need clean air and water to survive, like us. if they die, we die. dinosaurs didnt genetically enhance their vegetables and fruits before eating them either. but you are right about the earth. its an amazing surviver. but that doesnt mean we'll survive with it.

I completely agree with all of this and I am 100% willing to make changes to my life. Only problem, these sorts of changes cost money, a lot of money. It kinda sucks but I think oil will have to run out before any big changes are made and eco-friendly products are made more cost effective. For everyone saying its because of overpopulation, well don't worry because when we run out of oil, that will make a pretty substantial dent in the population. I'm hoping the zombie virus is what comes first.

I love this video. One thing I would recommend would be a plan to reduce the population explosion. I think there should be some kind of law that limits the conception of unwanted children. Also unnatural means to extend life into the vegetative state should not be condoned. I see nothing wrong with terminating an unwanted existence,

First of all the civilization has to drink all the oil and then find a way to survive without it by developing the already known sustainable ways to get clean energy (solar cells, wind turbines, sea waves turbines, etc). In the meanwhile theres a lot to do to drop down our carbon foot print.

@SyeraMiktayee I hear this all the time and I always feel the bigger elephant is miss management of resources. For example if everyone uses on avg 30 kwh a day at home and an NRG efficient home uses 5 kwh a day then we could theoretically increase population 6 times and still be the same as now.

In the introduction of the "Sustainability Explained through Animation" video from Module 1 the following definition of sustainability on planet earth is provided: "sustainability for our planet means that it can continue to do what it was designed to do." Claiming that the planet was designed to do something suggests a designer and a purpose. Together a designer and a purpose suggest an intelligent designer. The video does not make clear who that intelligent designer is but merely suggests that such an intelligent designer exists. For one that does not believe in an intelligent designer of the earth or the universe, the video loses its entire premise for its eventual claim that humans have a moral responsibility or duty to fulfil for the benefit of the planet.
@MrPJBarney
@MrPJBarney Жыл бұрын
I hold to the view that the planet does have an intelligent Designer: the triune, eternal God of Israel, the Creator of all space, matter, and time. I hold that our duty is to Him, to abide by His law and written Word, His commandments: (1) Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind, and (2) Love your neighbor as yourself. All of us have disobeyed His commandments, or sinned, by acting wickedly in idolizing, lying, stealing, coveting. We are prone to do evil. God, being a just and loving God, must punish wickedness, or He would neither be just nor loving. Therefore, we are worthy of God's judgement and cannot know God, for sin cannot exist in the presence of God. But God rich in mercy sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, the Christ, born of a virgin woman to do what we could not -- live a life without sin, receive unto Himself our punishment, die a death that we deserved, rise from the dead, and attribute His righteousness unto us. By doing so, God satisfied His justice and demonstrated His love for mankind, His creation. Through faith in His only begotten Son and His finished work, God offers mankind a relationship with Himself, the forgiveness of sins, and eternal life. The work is finished, and God is calling.

@SonjaSmith Industrial age. Education is higher, so we recycle and have filters and smog collectors. Computers are saving trees, we are solarizing and using wind power. We are organic farming again, but on 'mass scale' because we have machines that allow it in a less time consuming nature. People who want us to go BACK in Time are wrong. We are evolving above and beyond the use of fossil fuels- by new technologies that only wealth/education/prosperity can provide. Prosperity is great , Evolve!

@michaelchull I don't see the connection. Drinks should be at the party anyway, it's also polite to bring drinks to share to a party, but that has nothing to do with the video.

@SonjaSmith I agree that we could live side by side in Texas, but we still need food, clothes and so fourth. These resources will of course take up a lot of space, since farms and factories needs to be built. We just need to raise the standard of living in poor countries, and decrease the consumption in extemely wealthy states like the US, Norway and the Unied Arabian Emirates. This including birth control will reduce the world population over time.

What do you want in two minutes? First you accept the premises. The solutions follow. For instance, make the things we want to curtail gradually more expensive and use the money to lower the price of things we want to encourage. We could stop taxing work employment and services, for instance, and instead base government revenues on a rising tax on carbon.

great video. problem is that people will only do something when it starts to COST them more... money is the God to which most people pray!

@ nicorbit- 1 min in it says: "as the population increses, demands for the earths services increse." Therefore, if the population decreses, so do the demands on the earth. Even if we all recycle and stuff, we will still make too many demands on the earth just by virture of there being so many of us! As you said "INFINITE (population) GROWTH IN A CLOSED SYSTEM IS SETTING MANKIND ON A COLLISION COURSE."

"Money/market" is ROOT of problems, how do we: 1. stop corruption caused by profit motive? 2. ensure everyone has minimum necessities? ANSWER 1. FREELY Share ALL resources & knowledge worldwide, NO more money/property 2. Use LATEST technology to create an ABUNDANCE of all our needs, NO more waste/theft 3. Automate/localize ALL production and distribution, NO more central control/wage slavery v=4Z9WVZddH9w
