I took my 660cc turbo Suzuki Jimny ice fishing for a day in Canada. It was my first real off road test of the car, and I came away very impressed with it.

Hi Brandin, just found your videos on the Jimny. I am excited to be picking one up next month myself and will be making the same drive, (well to Niverville, so another half an hour heh) how was it in the mountains? I know my last import I brought back I found the speed limits to be 120 in places. You had mentioned around 9l /100K, does that still hold true? Would be fun to meet up and go Jimnying.

That's awesome, you'll have a blast driving it home! What year/model did you get? I found it could do 115-120 without issue, but the fuel economy does start to suffer once you start pushing it like that. Around town in the winter I've been getting 11 or 12 L/100km. Summer city driving more like 10. Would be cool to meet up some time, I just have to get mine back on the road!

Hi Brandin, I thought that the Jimnys were 1.2 L? What year is yours then? Where did you purchase it? Thanks, Martin.

Hi Martin, mine is a 1996 model from Japan. In Japan they offer them with the 1.3, but mostly with the 660cc turbo. I don't believe the 660cc is offered in any other markets, as its designed for a specific class of vehicles (kei cars) in Japan which have special treatment regarding taxes and parking regulations. Would you say the 660 does well on highways? It doesn’t overheat and such does it?

It can definitely handle the highway miles, I drove it over 2,000 km's from Vancouver to Winnipeg! I haven't had any trouble with overheating despite how high it revs at highway speed (4k+ rpms). Doing US interstate speeds may be a tall order if that's what you had in mind. Also, it's not exactly a quiet ride at 100 km/hour, but it remains fairly composed at that speed.

What is the fastest you have had it on the highway. And is 50 kph your normal highway sped up there. I am down here in the states and know that 70 mph would be un doable I would think.

Pardon my ignorance - but so this car is an import, and not directly available for sale in Canada? So then what's the closest thing to this, that is available in Canada directly?

I think either finding an old Samurai, or buying a two door Jeep Wrangler. But the Wrangler is a lot bigger.

@@brandinstoesz2028 I think the Renegade is their smallest. You're paying a lot just for the Jeep brand name.

@@manofsan Very true, I think the build/capability of the Wrangler is more similar to the Suzuki (body on frame, solid axles etc), but both Jeeps will likely set you back a fair bit.

I wish! This one is a 1996 model that I imported from Japan. Unfortunately I don't think there's any plans to sell the new ones in North America any time soon.

@@brandinstoesz2028 gee, that's too bad. It looks like the descendant of the popular Suzuki Samurai from the 1980s. Those always looked to be fun, even though they were found to have that rollover problem (I guess it was that high centre of gravity.) Since you have it as an import, doesn't that make it more expensive to repair? (Btw, you might try a squirt of pine sap for that extra tire traction if you get stuck in snow like that again)

@@manofsan Yes repairs are a bit more difficult, but still manageable. I had heard about the rollover issues of the old samurai, but I think they may have been overblown! I'll have to remember that pine sap technique!

@@brandinstoesz2028 have you heard of the Roxor by Mahindra? Plenty of those on KZfaq - lots of people proud of their after-market modifications. It's a ute that gets used for off-roading.

I've heard of Mahindra, but I'm not familiar with their different models. I'll have to check it out!
