One of the biggest things about the film that was lost on you was the refrences to March 11th, more specifically 3-11-2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami which is one of the worst natural disasters to have affected Japan in recent years. Toho had given warnings in Japan around/during it's theatrical release due to the content matter as well.

If you haven't seen it yet, you'd probably enjoy another film of his "the place promised in our early days" from 2004.
