Just in case you didn't know, the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 was a real disaster with waves up to 40 meters and claiming over 20,000 lives. It was the 4th most powerful earthquake ever recorded in the world. It also caused the Fukushima nuclear disaster, after the tsunami destroyed the nuclear plant's energy sources.

It warmed my heart hearing about the Japanese people who took shifts in the nuclear plant after the earthquakes and ensuing tsunami to keep it working and stop it from going critical. Hero's exist in every country, and Japan is no certainly no different.

My father and grandmother died in the Great East Japan Earthquake. It was a truly terrifying event. My home and family were all destroyed. I think this film is very necessary so that the Japanese people of today do not forget these 20,000 victims. My father is still missing from the tsunami. Please find someone. Because the text is a translation, there may be some strange parts. I would be happy if you could look at it with a kind heart.😭

As a Japanese, I want you guys to know that this film is about the Great East Japan Earthquake. The families of the 10,000 victims could not say "welcome back" to their loved ones beyond saying "see you later". If you watch this film again knowing this fact, you will understand how dear Suzume, who lost her family in the earthquake, was able to say "welcome back" to Shouta.

The worm is just as Sōta said: a force living under Japan without purpose but disturbed causes earthquakes. It's loosely based on the folklore where there's a giant catfish living under the archipelago - it's believed to cause earthquakes by whipping it's whiskers around. The gates open in abandoned places because human emotions no longer weight them down. The locations in the movie are representing different natural disasters Japan was hit by across time (for example the school gate in Ehime opened in a place struck by torrential rain and a massive landslide) Suzume mother died in 3.11.11 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that claimed the lives of over 20000 people. A lot of people never came back home to hear "welcome back!" that day - which was a theme throughout. The movie is an allegory for closure. Suzume gets closure by understanding her memories and taking the place of her mother and guide for her younger self and the story is essentially a message for Japanese people that they only thing they can do about natural disasters is to learn to live side by side with them and how to let go of the past (without forgetting it) for a brighter future. It's also trying to connect older, traumatized population with the young who don't remember 3.11 and the pain it caused. When it comes to the cats - Daijin did all this because Suzume asked him to become her kitty - he was frozen for decades so it's obvious he wanted some fun after being freed, so his attitude towards Sōta is essentially "no hard feelings but she's mine". Sadaijin influenced Tamaki to say her darkest feelings to ensure she won't interrupt Suzume in her quest - he tried to fix everything and they cannot do that without human hands and just so happens that Suzume is the only one capable of entering the everafter, that's why Daijin hissed at him and why they fought briefly. Sorry for a wall of text but I tried to explain everything that can be confusing. It's my favourite movie by far.

I love the beautiful music in this movie. This movie depicts the worst disaster that actually occurred in Japan on March 11, 2011 as one theme. Yes, that big earthquake, that big tsunami, that nuclear power plant. In other words, "3.11" "Great East Japan Earthquake." The earthquake and incredibly large tsunami instantly claimed the lives of more than 20,000 people.😢🌊🌊 The saddest part is that there are still many people who have not returned from the sea.... Nature is sometimes a great and beautiful mystery, and it is also a rich blessing. Nature is sometimes a terrifying, cruel mystery, and a cruel threat.

Theres so much to this film especially in relation to trauma and natural disasters. Japan, both the county and the people in it, have so much trauma and they're heavy belief in spirits possessing land and spaces is so strong. This film hit a lot of people in theatres, especially those that lost families and communities to natural disasters. And there are fears of trapped souls to those events. It's a much needed film.

oh my god. i just watched it myself and now i searched up reactions to it to rewatch it lmao and the foreshadowing of things i didnt notice the first time is. insane. like when she goes looking for the guy in the very beginning of the movie and talks to herself/him “i feel like we’ve met before” BECAUSE THEY DID. aaaaah i thought she was being corny because she liked him but she literally recognized him from her childhood. i love stuff like this

The sight of the town burning in the final battle scene is an accurate representation of the night scene of 3/11. On the night of March 11th, there were no lights in the town destroyed by the tsunami, and it was pitch black. I still remember the shock I felt when I saw the fire spreading through that town on the news.

33:13 The song that plays as they leave Tokyo in Serizawa's car is "Rouge no Dengon" (Message of Rouge), a song from the Ghibli film "Kiki's Delivery Service". This is an indication of Makoto Shinkai's influence from Ghibli👍

Some facts about this movie from Japan🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵 The film, called Suzume overseas (the original title is a bit longer in Japanese and says When Suzume Closes the Door), was made, as others have said, as a requiem for the 15,900 dead and 2,523 missing (victims whose bodies were never found) who died in the earthquake and tsunami that hit the northeast region of Japan 13 years ago. (the victims whose bodies have not yet been found) who were killed in the earthquake and tsunami that struck the northeastern region of Japan 13 years ago. The tsunami warning that is heard when the main character, Suzume, returns to her childhood home with her deceased mother for the first time in 12 years and finds her diary is very sad and brings tears to the eyes of the Japanese people who knew her in those days. The name of the owner of the voice of the tsunami warning is Miki Endou, Endou being a Japanese surname meaning a wisteria flower seen in the distance, and Miki being a Japanese name meaning hope for the future and a child who will realize his or her dreams in the future. She is a responsible woman and was one of the officials working in the town hall of Minamisanriku, a large town in Miyagi Prefecture that was swallowed by a tsunami of over 10 meters on March 11, 13 years ago. When she heard how high the tsunami was expected to be, she rushed into the broadcast room next to the disaster management office and shouted through the town's radio speakers for more than 30 minutes, urging all residents to take shelter on higher ground. The spirit of the people of Minamisanriku was so great that a resident of Minamisanriku commented, "It's hard to believe because we usually only get 10 cm or 30 cm tsunamis, but if the officials are shouting so hard, maybe a 10-meter tsunami is really coming." and more people headed for higher ground. Many people sensed the seriousness of her voice and made up their minds to evacuate, and as a result, their lives were saved. However, the woman who saved so many people died as a victim of the tsunami. Just as she nodded her head to her colleague's advice to stop the broadcast and evacuate the town hall, the tsunami engulfed the town hall. There were 40 town hall employees who evacuated to the roof, but only 11 survivors were standing on the roof after the 10-meter tsunami passed by. Only a few people clinging to the antennae on the rooftop survived, and she was not among them. She was missing. If this tragedy had not happened, she would have been married to her favorite fiancé six months later and they would have become husband and wife. Upon hearing of this tragedy, the then prime minister of Japan ordered that her tragedy be included in elementary and junior high school Japanese language textbooks and gave a speech praising her actions. Her parents, however, protested the prime minister's speech and order. Both her father and mother put up with their grief over the loss of their daughter and told the prime minister, "We will not be able to help you. Our couple's daughter was not the only one who acted to save many citizens and townspeople that day. Many officials made efforts to save people, each of them using all their intelligence and physical strength. Why did the Prime Minister focus only on our daughter? We should praise all the prefectural, city, and town officials who died that day. All of them should be mentioned in our Japanese language and morality textbooks." In Japan, many people were moved and agreed with her parents' words, so many people in Japan know that this "voice on the disaster radio at the time of the tsunami on March 11, 13 years ago" is about Miki Endou, and they feel sad and sorrowful. In fact, when I was watching this movie in a movie theater in Japan, I heard several whispers and sobs from the audience who, at the moment of this scene, muttered bitterly, "Oh, Minamisanriku's..." or shook their voices sadly, "It's the disaster prevention radio person...". Perhaps Suzume also remembers hearing her voice while searching for her mother as the tsunami hit the town. On that day 13 years ago, there were many young children and parents who truly experienced this kind of tragedy, including young parents who lost three of their children (all elementary school age and younger) in an instant, kindergarten buses that were swallowed by tsunami and gasoline flames as they headed back to town to bring their kindergarten children back to their respective homes by the sea, oblivious to the tsunami and charred to a crisp. Many tragic events occurred, including a kindergarten teacher and several kindergartners who were charred by the tsunami, and an elementary school where many elementary school students died as a result of the principal and teachers who could not make the decision to evacuate to higher ground and instead moved the students to a bridge near the river. There was also a 17-year-old high school girl who had lost her parents, elementary School Sister, and grandparents and had to live on her own. There was a woman who was desperately fleeing the tsunami in a car with her husband, nursery school son, and several-month-old baby daughter, but was swallowed by the torrent, and when she regained consciousness, both the baby she was supposed to be carrying and her husband were missing, and she screamed. The tsunami caused the bereavement of many close family members. That was March 11, 13 years ago.

Thank you for the wonderful video, and as a Japanese person, there are some things I would like you to know. If you don't know anything about earthquakes in Japan, you will end up with an ambiguous interpretation of this movie. Both Kobe and the Tohoku region, where Suzume's house was destroyed, suffered damage from the earthquake. In particular, the Tohoku region was hit by a 30m tsunami due to the March 11, 2011 earthquake. Also, the town that Serizawa said was beautiful was abandoned after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident caused by the tsunami made it difficult to return home. There is a contrast between the land, which appears to be empty to the disaster victims, and the land that appears to be beautiful to outsiders. More importantly, it is known that Miyazaki, where the earthquake occurs at the beginning of the movie, and Tokyo, the capital of Japan, have an 80% chance of experiencing a major earthquake within 30 years. Various measures are being taken in Japan to reduce the hundreds of thousands of deaths caused by these earthquakes. A major earthquake and tsunami occurred in Ishikawa on January 1, 2024. I want people to know that this movie shows that Japan is inextricably linked to earthquakes. This article used machine translation. Sorry if it's hard to read. And thank you for reading.

I don't know if it is in the US, but something similar to that earthquake forecasting app is actually in operation in Japan. The Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011 left a deep scar and trauma on the Japanese people and Japan itself, and I think the purpose of the film is to repose the souls and the heart of the many people who lost their families, their homes, and their cities, and their lives were drastically changed. As a person who lived far from the disaster area, I myself thought that Japan was really over when the industries destroyed by the tsunami and the nuclear power plant accident affected the whole country. But the bond between people was the most powerful force to overcome the disaster. The "311" disaster is still a very sensitive topic, especially in entertainment. I can understand why many people feel that it is inappropriate to treat it as entertainment, especially since so many people lost their lives. However, I think it is very important that the disaster will be conveyed to young people and people in other countries who do not know what happened at that time by remaining in the form of works like this.

In Japanese folklore, Gods die if no one remembers them anymore (or really weakened, I'm not 100% sure). That's why when Daijin first came to Suzume's house he was so thin and sickly. And that's why her giving him food and showing love made him healthy immediately. He probably haven't experienced that in hundreds of years, if not thousands. That's why he as so attached to Suzume, to the point where he would rather make Souta a keystone, so he can live with Suzume, in his opinion the only person in the entire world that loves him. And that's why he went back to being a keystone at the end, so he could make Suzume happy by returning Souta to her.

The box office record is insane in Japan and Taiwan, both our countries suffered from earthquakes forever cuz our geographical location, countless people falls from the disaster. This movie is just touching. Different from other Makoto Shinkai’s movies, suzume is actually focuses on natural disaster rather than romantic story(though still have some elements in it)

Yeah I know exactly where youre coming from and I've come to peace with this is how most people discover Babymetal but honestly listen to their new stuff. I am a huge fan and do enjoy the older stuff I started listening to them in 2015 but these days it's just not representative of them, even live they've changed up arrangements and down tuned so the songs feel better (also because the girls aren't kids anymore and have more mature voices). Babymetal on whole is a spectacle in the best way. It's not only the music, but also the choreography, and the staging and the lights, just everything and always beat served live. Monochrome, Mirror Mirror, Divine Attack,, those songs are some of the best metal songs in years.
