In this video I discuss some of the problems I discovered in a discarded Suzuki SV650 engine with just over 60,000 km and investigate why the bike owner might have replaced it.

I believe that those gears are Nylon, a strong material that is used primarily for noise reduction!

It would seem to be worth fixing, as the problem is so minor. Those plastic gears could be replaced too and then, with new gaskets etc you'd have a good engine to resell for a tidy profit. BTW, I have a 2002 SV650S (in Tasmania) that I've owned since new. It's done 40K kilometres, never been dropped and has a FSH. It's had a quality pipe on it since 1200 km, which put five kw in the midrange and makes it sound fantastic. Given speed cameras etc, it's actually fun to have a bike that I can reasonably legally use the whole rev range while sounding like I have huge power 😀

60k km is not high for an SV.

Awesome! What are you planning to do with the engine now? Are you replacing the starter motor and using the engine?

Given the age, what would the options be to replace the plastic gears? Can you get after-market ones easily or would you need to custom make them?

Throwing away a dl650 engine at 60.000...blasphemy. If propperly taken care of (oil, filters, valves, timing chain) they easily last over 200.000 And that comes from how brilliant the Jappanese were when they built this engine. How the oil jets work and are distribuited and how the oil is ran trough the oil cooler to keep an optimal temperature.

it's a no-brainer.... condemning a whole engine bcuz of a bad starter!?!?!... i'd changed mechanics that day.
