Considering how little compiled coverage has been given in regards to the earlier Succession Wars, these videos you've made are utter godsends. The political and military outlines you've made in regards to the Inner Sphere just before the First Succession War simply underlines just what a gigantic stack of powder kegs was now sitting around at this time... and how intent everyone was on setting the entire pile off.

Thank you. I agree that it's an oft overlooked era. I believe that's because it's easier just to describe the state of affairs in 3025 then the wars that led to it, and there are very little later events that are influenced by the SWs, unlike the Age of War and Star League which seem more impactful. By the 4thSW, the Inner Sphere is in recovery so there's less importance on how things got so bad.

I don't know how all of this pans out. So I picked a handful of units to follow as "favourites" and hope they do well in the coming conflicts. My picks: Marik: Free world guards Davon: Syrtis Fusiliers Magistracy: Magistracy royal guard (no reason) Mercs: Blue star Irregulars and the Grave walkers. Now I wonder how they will do, or even if they get mentioned XD

I'm interested in your source for the Deneb Light Cavalry. My own understanding is that the 4th Deneb Light Cavalry were a SLDF regiment that joined the FedSuns in return for badly needed food supplies on Deneb Kaitos, their homeworld, and trained up regiments in their own image for the AFFS. I don't recall any reference that they were originally recruited from the FedSuns. Both FM: Federated Suns and House Davion list the origin I just gave.

LoL "South Essex!!!" So that brings up an idea. Sharpe is a fictional series, but one of the things I love about BT is that it sends me down all these cool real-world rabbit holes. I actually found your BT videos via a link to the one describing what the combined arms unit names meant, and from where they originated. It might be fun to explore historical parallels to BT events, whether they inspired the lore or just happen to line up. Looking up "Gallowglass" made me wonder if they'd inspired the notion of Clanner society, for example.

You're right, I probably should have commented on it. I just took it as a given that folks understood they had vast numbers available, but we're never given any concrete figures by the siurces that I could have referenced. There is one point in the next episode where I talk about the Capellan being caught off guard by the lack of restraint in nuclear deployment, and learning in that moment that nukes are fair game.

@MM22966 10 ай бұрын
@@SvenVanDerPlank Understandable. As I said, nukes and chemical/bio weapons aren't really a "Battletech" thing. I have a suspicion they were mostly added/made mention of much later to properly explain how so much destruction could happen so fast (not just with mechs/warships) when they started writing more detail about the SL Civil War and 1st SW. Nukes are a plot device, not a character of Battletech, not even as a NPC. I DO appreciate how much you delved into the Warship situation, though!

"The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time" --Edward Grey, August 3rd 1914. Darkness is falling to every person at the time and future, even the SLDF and later Clan who left Inner sphere behind couldn't escape from that. I think the whole battletech universe never back to the height of this era after the humane nightfall. 3049 or 3129, even ilClan era there wasn't enough recovery from the damage was caused. Yes people's life in 2786 was very bad compare to 20 years ago that before the Amaris coup and civil war. But what coming next is completely incomparable destruction that Sven already said in this video, which Word of Blake's Jihad and all of wars and conflicts after Clan invasion feels poorly made parody play. @@rainyvideos3684 But the US military has been broadly 'at peace' since 1945 (I realise this isn't precisely true, but it's close enough by the 'full strategic arsenals deployed, existence of the State itself is at stake' standards that Battletech aims for). For comparison, at its peak in WW2, the US military was apparently in the region of 16 million men. That's a little over 11% of the total US population at the time (just shy of 140 million). Whereas today the US 'only' has 1.35 million in the military and a population of 334 million, so 0.4%. So yeah, the idea that the Inner Sphere as a whole 'should' have been able to put a lot more men and metal in the field than the canonical numbers suggest definitely has legs.

@efffvss I got that. I'm in the military. But we're also smaller then we should be. So the point stands. Especially since we're supposed to be orienting ourselves to fight near peer opponents.

I often wonder the insane pressure being the commander and chief of a multi star system war on multiple front against numerous enemies of equal footing. FDR died just because of WW2 and that only took place on 1 planet.

Anyone know where he's getting the conventional regiment numbers? Cause I can't find it in the first succession war sourcebook.

p.166 of the 1stSW sourcebook. I then cross-reference that with FM 2765:DCMS which gives us relatively exact numbers for conventional forces only 20 years earlier to see that those tables give totals that are in the same ballpark. It's not exact but the relative differences between the houses should be accurate since the numbers are drawn from the same table.

Sven something to add that you might not be aware of, or maybe you just made a mistake in editing and recording. You said the Liao Guards were personnel brigade of the ruling house and then list their strength as 4 regiments. Well regiments are brigade equivalent formations in terms of the level of military command that they sit at with the next level above them being a division. And since there are four regiments, it would be more accurate to say that they are the personnel division of the ruling house.

You're right and you're wrong. In BattleTech, for whatever reason, the various groupings/supercategories or however you want to refer to them are consistently referred to as brigades. This leads to somewhat confusing situations where the Davion Brigade of Guards contains eight combined-arms divisions, and the Lyran Guards brigade is subdivided into five divisions. It's just a relic of whoever first wrote these things not having to deal with large formations at the time, so they used the word brigade liberally.

The Halo fan in me is drawn to them. Plus they're bloody enormous by post-Star League standards (and no small number of them). To the best of my knowledge, the LCS Nightwind is the only remaining vessel that's heavier.
