I spent some time today making some tooling. I forged some swages mostly; one for some projects I have coming up in the not to distant future and another to help speed up my tong making processes. Forging something over and over and be hard and most blacksmiths and workshops take advantage of swages. The both make blacksmithing easier and more consistence. That being said there is still a lot of skill in making good swages.
I also made a spatula for my mother as it her birthday!

Could you have done the whole process with the fly press? I have been considering acquiring one (sadly at great expense in the US) and would love to know the limitations. Also, you would do well to build a relationship with some other channels (perhaps a collaboration with Tim at Big Dog Forge) in order to get your name out there more. This channel deserves a lot more subscribers than it has.

Lou L errrrrrr possible but I'm not sure it would have the pressure to do it in one heat. it might work well if a hydraulic press. it's something that would need some testing.

On my swages I make them oval. The top to bottom = desired od. and the side to side at least as big as the max od. As I hammer I rotate it to the round.

I love your content. You are very talented and have a style like no other. As a viewer who uses ear buds on my phone, I find the music distracting and too loud. I would much rather listen to a man working, then have to adjust my volume. Less is more. I dont want to be critical, but I know subscribers levitate to content more then editing. Keep up the good work.

..belated Happy Birthday to your mum!! She raised a Good yungun! Those Swages are Fan-Dan-Tastic!!! dum question, Does the handle for the swages need to be spring steel or will plain old mild work??...
@danielmoss2089
@danielmoss2089 6 жыл бұрын
Your too kind dude as always. I haven't ever had any issues with using mild as in the video but spring some times work hardens and snaps. Also the spring quality's are often dude to the hardening process and can cause issuse. The materiel i have found that works best is 304 stainless steel.

so what sort of thickness of stock would you recommend for making swages out of Dan? 13mm do the job?
@danielmoss2089
@danielmoss2089 6 жыл бұрын
both the the swages where 20mm thick. But it depends on what you making. to blocks of 13 on top of each other would make a sweet swage for up to 12-14mm round i guess. hope that helps.
