INteretsing topic when we talk about organised chain of command in militaries .... Chhatrapati was and will be a great ruler and one of the greatest heroes for India..no doubts on that...but there were other rulers who had very well organised militaries and chain of comand..case in example being the Ahom rulers who had a long history of battles with the Mughals. their Army's chain of command was thus ..."Bora was the leader of twenty paiks, Saikia was the leader of a hundred or more, and Hazarika was the leader of a thousand, a Barua was leader of 2000 soldiers, a Rajkowa a leader of 3000 soldiers and a Phukan of 6000 soldiers. The army's commander-in-chief was known as Borphukan. SO the chain of command was not something which can be attributed to only the Maratha empire! WOuld request Ranveer to do a vlog on the Ahoms too.unless already done...so little is known about the North East! Just my two pence

To understand the army under the king directly one should look at the Cholas under Rajendra Chola. He had a massive army of over 2lakh

Hindu Kings following a Core unit-Chain of command with Senapati as its head who directly reports to the king as the de-facto "Lord" of all troops, WITHOUT relying on zamindars: 1. Chakravartin Samrat Prithu 2. Chakravarti Samrat Nahush 3. Chakravarti Samrat Bharat 4. Bhupati Samrat Takshak 5. Bhupati Samrat Ikshavaku 6. KshatriyaShiromani KartiveeryaArjuna 7. ParaBrahma Paramatma Purushotamma Shri Rama 8. Asura Raj Ravan 9. Maharaja Dashratha 10. Mathura Nripesh Jarasandh 11. DharmaRaja Yudhishtira Reference, Mahabharata, Harivamsa, Ramayana and Bhagavat and Agni Mahapurana. Then, in the Kali Era, 1. Mahapadmananda 2. AjatShatru 3. The entire Mauryan dynasty 4. Chakravartin Samrat Vikramaditya 5. Gupta Samrat Vikramaditya 6. Sumangalnath 7. BheemaDeva 8. ParamaraDeva Bhoja Raja 9. Maharaja Samudragupta 10. And finally Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj References are scattered but basically any king who followed Chanakya's Arthshastra as its political philosophy. The above mentioned kings explicitly state following a "Brahmin who helped repelled the Yavans 2000 years after Kali", which is basically VishnuGupta Chanakya. Fun or not so fun fact; having a chain of command with King as the de-facto "Lord" of the troops is critical to the Vedic scriptures and notion of Kingship. History testifies that anyone who abandoned this system, created a weak kingdom which couldn't stand the tests of time and disintegrated. Raje only revived this central Vedic tenet of Military and hence was titles "ShastraShaastra Parangata" i.e. having complete mastery over weapons and scriptures. Another fun fact; the Veer Shaivas as well the Nath yogis too are called as ShastraShaastra Parangata because they are warrior saints and they too have a chain-of-command when and if they fight.
